- Chapter 2 - "There won’t be a next time."
Lu Jie and Zhou Yi had grown up together. Their families were close, and the two of them had always been tight. Naturally, their bond was anything but ordinary.
Only then did Zhou Yi’s expression ease slightly.
Lu Jie noticed.
So Young Master Zhou had finally been tempted by mortal desires, huh?
Out of the corner of his eye, Lu Jie suddenly spotted something. Grinning, he teased, “Oh? Is your little sweetheart here?”
Zhou Yi blinked in surprise. His hand instantly let go as he turned toward the rooftop door.
Ruan Tang, cheeks flushed, walked over slowly.
Her softly curled hair draped over her shoulders. Her palm-sized face was smooth and fair, with those peach blossom eyes glistening like spring water—enchanting, heart-stealing.
Zhou Yi was completely dazed.
Even Lu Jie beside him was momentarily spellbound.
It was his first time seeing such a stunning, adorable girl. She had the allure of a siren, yet the purity of an angel.
That contrast… was lethal.
His heart thumped uncontrollably.
Suddenly, he started regretting what he’d said earlier—“Of course I’m not going to compete with you over a girl.”
Could he take that back?
“Zhou Yi.”
Ruan Tang’s voice was soft and sweet, sending a tingling warmth straight to the heart.
She didn’t even realize it herself, casting a cautious glance up at Zhou Yi with those dewy peach blossom eyes full of innocent guilt.
She actually felt kind of bad.
Originally, Zhou Yi had been the “male lead” of this world.
But according to the system, thanks to the morning’s chaotic misunderstanding, he’d already lost that qualification.
Which meant… Zhou Yi, just like her, was now cannon fodder.
Sigh. Poor guy.
Even though the system insisted it wasn’t her fault—Zhou Yi had just short-circuited and broken character all on his own—it still made Ruan Tang feel guilty.
So she’d gone and bought a big bag of snacks as an apology.
She held the bag out in front of Zhou Yi, looking completely sincere.
“Zhou Yi, thank you for the soup dumplings earlier. They were really good. This is for you.”
“I’ve tried everything in here—they’re all delicious. When you’re feeling down, something sweet helps.”
The girl smiled, gentle and bright. “Here.”
Zhou Yi was baffled.
Why would he be feeling down?
Sure, there had been a bit of awkwardness from misunderstanding things earlier… and maybe a tiny, hard-to-admit pang of disappointment.
Still, seeing how the plastic bag was digging into her delicate fingers, he immediately reached out to take it.
His tone carried a hint of disapproval.
“Why are you carrying something so heavy? Do you even know your own strength? Why didn’t you ask someone to help you?”
His voice, as always, was cool and reserved. Even though he meant well, his words came out sounding like a scolding.
Ruan Tang pouted, taking a small step back, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Why should I ask someone else? It’s not like I can’t carry it myself.”
She didn’t want to trouble anyone with her own business.
Zhou Yi realized he’d let his worry get the better of him. His voice had come out too harsh and ended up scaring her.
So he softened his tone.
“Dummy. Next time, don’t bring so much when you’re coming to see me.”
Hearing that fondly indulgent tone, Lu Jie’s eyes widened. He nearly dropped his phone in shock.
Was this really his lifelong poker-faced, emotionless best friend?
The infamous aloof flower on the mountaintop, cold and out of reach?
Who was this man with eyes full of affection and a voice gentler than water?!
What kind of girl was she to make Zhou Yi fall this hard?
Ruan Tang, meanwhile, had no idea. She simply wrinkled her delicate brows with clear disapproval.
“There won’t be a next time.”
She rubbed her hand and spoke in her soft, cotton-candy voice:
“Zhou Yi, let’s pretend nothing happened the other day, okay? From now on, we’ll have nothing to do with each other. Let’s go back to being strangers.”
Since he was cannon fodder now, he had nothing to do with her mission.
So Ruan Tang cut him off without hesitation.
Zhou Yi was stunned.
His expression turned icy in an instant, and he abruptly grabbed her slender wrist.
“Hey! Zhou Yi!”
Lu Jie’s face changed, reaching out to pull him off.
“You’re not seriously going to get rough with a girl, are you?!”
But Zhou Yi ignored him, eyes locked on Ruan Tang’s.
“Didn’t you say you liked soup dumplings?”
Lu Jie: “…Huh?”
Ruan Tang was also stunned.
“What?”
Zhou Yi’s callused fingers brushed against hers, gently rubbing the red marks left by the plastic bag. His voice dropped, deep and magnetic.
“From now on, I’ll buy them for you every day. Sound good?”
“Not just soup dumplings. Whatever you like, I’ll get it for you. Okay?”
He said it with a soft smile tugging at his lips.
His usually sharp features warmed with that touch of fondness, like a spring breeze. He was breathtaking.
Ruan Tang stared at him, stunned.
So he could smile.
But wait—the system said his facial nerves were damaged, didn’t it?
Could the all-knowing system be… wrong?
Watching the little dummy drift off in thought, Zhou Yi almost lost control of his expression.
He knew he was good-looking—but he’d never cared.
This was the first time he’d actually tried using his looks to win someone over.
And it didn’t work.
A flicker of frustration crossed his face.
Zhou Yi narrowed his eyes. Still holding her wrist, he gave a slight tug and pulled her into his arms.
He leaned in close and murmured into her ear.
“I’m standing right in front of you. If you won’t look at me… who are you looking at?”
His breath brushed her sensitive ear as he spoke.
Ruan Tang’s face went beet red. She panicked, shoved him away, and ran.
She didn’t stop until she’d sprinted all the way downstairs, heart pounding.
Face still flushed, she asked the system,
【Tong! Tongtong! Did he totally snap from the trauma?! Why don’t I understand anything he just said?!】
The system ground its teeth. 【Ignore him! He’s a complete psycho! Tangtang, don’t bother with him!】
Why was some cannon fodder being so overbearing?!
And what’s with him questioning this system’s judgment?!
Back on the rooftop—
Zhou Yi was still savoring the soft feel of her fingertips.
Ruan Tang. Soft candy.
She really was adorable—sweet and soft through and through.
“Tsk. You’re grinning like a pervert,” Lu Jie muttered, frowning.
Zhou Yi didn’t bother replying.
Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a piece of paper on the ground. He picked it up.
—It was a love letter from the little dummy.
A flicker of delight lit up his eyes, quickly replaced with overwhelming sweetness.
So she had meant to confess to him this morning?
She must’ve been so flustered she grabbed the wrong paper by mistake.
Adorable.
He sniffed the sweet scent left on the letter, and the sharpness in his features eased. His eyes brimmed with obsession.
You’re mine now, little Soft Candy.
The pink letter caught Lu Jie’s attention. He frowned.
“What’s it say? Let me see.”
He reached for it, but Zhou Yi smacked his hand away.
“I’ll say it one last time, Lu Jie—don’t even think about her.”
His smile vanished, replaced by that familiar icy demeanor.
“If you do… even you won’t be spared.”
With that, Zhou Yi turned and left.
Lu Jie stood there, brows furrowed tight, cursing under his breath.
—Why did it hurt so much?
A surge of nameless anger rose in his chest, clawing at him with jealousy and frustration.
