- Chapter 35 - Caught on the Lips
Ruan Tang flushed slightly at the question.
Thinking about it now… Lu Chengzhou didn’t suddenly kiss her until she couldn’t breathe, or bite her without warning, and he definitely hadn’t tried to eat her.
He gave her gifts. Brought her treats.
Maybe… he wasn’t as bad as she’d imagined.
The system picked up on her hesitation and jumped in to help push things along.
【Exactly. Young Master Lu really isn’t so bad.】
Still, Ruan Tang hesitated.
【But he treats merfolk like pets…】
【That’s only because he grew up in a world where the idea that merfolk are inferior is deeply ingrained. It’s hard to undo that kind of mindset.】
Ruan Tang blinked, her wide, innocent eyes uncertain. 【Is that really true?】
【It is. And compared to the other elite families, the Lu family’s treatment of merfolk is actually considered humane. They don’t beat or punish them for no reason, and they certainly don’t kill them on a whim. Merfolk with abilities can even work for the Lu family. That kind of opportunity? Unthinkable anywhere else.】
Ruan Tang looked surprised. This was the first time she was hearing any of this.
So people really did have two sides to them. You couldn’t judge someone too quickly!
【Thanks, Tongtong, for explaining it to me!】
The system beamed with pride.
【Hmph! Unlike those two Leng brothers always putting their hands all over our poor Tangtang with no sense of boundaries—at least this Lu kid is decent.】
Lu Chengzhou noticed she had gone quiet, her big eyes blinking as though she were puzzling through something deep.
He gently stroked her soft hair.
“Just having Tangtang agree to spend my birthday with me is the best gift I could ask for. Thank you, Tangtang.”
Ruan Tang was immediately moved.
“Chengzhou-gege, you’re such a good person!”
Lu Chengzhou’s smile froze at the corners of his lips.
Why did it suddenly sound like he’d just been friend-zoned?
He chuckled helplessly, then tucked a stray strand of her hair behind her ear. His fingertip brushed lightly across her soft earlobe.
“I’m not a good person. I just want to be good to you, Tangtang.”
Then, as if nothing had happened, he picked up a small fork and offered her another bite of dessert.
“Here, have some more cake. Be good—open wide.”
Ruan Tang was already used to being hand-fed by him. She opened her mouth naturally and obediently bit down on the fork.
Only this time… she accidentally bit down on Lu Chengzhou’s fingers too.
The moment her soft lips wrapped around his fingertip, a spark jolted down his spine, rushing straight to his heart.
Ruan Tang didn’t even realize what she’d done at first. She gave his finger a quick lick, then finally caught on and jerked back, face bright red.
She looked up and saw Lu Chengzhou staring at her, completely dazed. Thinking she’d scared him, she hurriedly explained in a small voice, cheeks still flushed:
“Don’t be afraid, I-I don’t eat people…”
Lu Chengzhou blinked, then burst out laughing.
—But what if I want to be eaten?
Meanwhile, at the Ruan family villa—
A tall, striking man stood outside Ruan Tang’s bedroom. His silver hair spilled over his shoulders, and his sculpted features were cold and refined.
He knocked gently.
“Lazy kitten, time to get up.”
Just thinking about seeing her again made his pale golden eyes soften.
A voice yawned from inside as another silver-haired boy emerged, handsome and tousle-haired.
“It’s still early. Let her sleep a little longer—she didn’t sleep well last night.”
Leng Li’s expression turned frosty.
“And whose fault is that? If a certain someone hadn’t launched a sneak attack last night, maybe she’d have gotten some rest.”
Leng Hao glared right back, refusing to back down.
“If you hadn’t barged in and ruined it, we’d have been asleep hours ago!”
Once again, the two brothers squared off in a stalemate, sparks flying between them.
Behind them, a timid maid approached to clean the room and hesitantly spoke up.
“Um… the young miss… she left early this morning.”
Both brothers froze.
“She left? With who?”
The maid blinked in surprise, like it should be obvious.
“Her fiancé, of course.”
The brothers’ expressions darkened immediately.
Lu Chengzhou led Ruan Tang to a room he had specially prepared for her.
“So? Do you like it? If you need anything else, just tell me—I’ll have it brought in right away.”
Ruan Tang quickly waved her hands.
“No need! It already has everything. I won’t be staying long, so don’t go to too much trouble.”
Lu Chengzhou’s smile faltered, as if her words had hurt him. He gently pressed her back against the long table, leaning in until his soft peach-blossom eyes were just inches from hers. He whispered at her ear:
“You’re not going to stay a little longer? Staying forever would be best. I missed you so much.”
His low, magnetic voice brushed against her ear like a seductive spell.
His lips just barely grazed her sensitive earlobe, sending a blush racing across her face and making her heart pound.
Ruan Tang shyly turned her face away and murmured:
“But… we just saw each other yesterday…”
Lu Chengzhou caught a glimpse of her flushed, delicate earlobe—like a ripe cherry, begging to be bitten.
He raised a hand and gently played with it, his eyes darkening.
“Even if I saw you every day, it still wouldn’t be enough. And don’t forget about those two annoying bodyguards at the Leng house.”
At the mention of the Leng brothers, Ruan Tang remembered being kissed… and bitten. Her gaze immediately began to drift.
Lu Chengzhou picked up on her shift and had a bad feeling.
“What happened after I left? Did they do something to you?”
His voice turned cold.
Panicked, Ruan Tang waved her hands and blurted:
“No, no! They definitely didn’t kiss me!!”
The warmth vanished from Lu Chengzhou’s face in an instant.
Even those usually carefree, smiling eyes turned sharp and icy.
He gritted out the words through clenched teeth:
“They kissed you? Which little bastard did it?”
Startled, Ruan Tang backed away instinctively—forgetting that there was a table behind her. She lost her balance and landed hard against it.
Lu Chengzhou stepped forward in a flash. One arm swept around her waist, pulling her close.
He loomed over her, trapping her between his chest and the edge of the table.
“Be honest. Where did they kiss you? Hm?”
His voice was low and commanding, his gaze intense as he stared down at her.
Ruan Tang trembled under the weight of it. Her long lashes quivered, and she bit her lip, too scared to answer.
Lu Chengzhou’s slender fingers brushed her forehead.
“Here?”
His fingertip slid down to her nose.
“Here?”
Then further still, to her soft lips. His eyes darkened with possessiveness.
“Or… here?”
This was the first time Ruan Tang had seen Lu Chengzhou truly angry. He was just as terrifying as Leng Li when he got mad—wuwuwu…
She didn’t dare respond directly. Her lashes lowered, eyes misting over with unshed tears, and she pleaded quietly:
“C-Can you let me down first? The door’s still open… What if someone sees…”
“And if they do? You’re my fiancée. What law says I can’t hold you?”
“B-But this position… it’s too embarrassing…”
Her flushed cheeks, trembling voice, and tearful eyes made Lu Chengzhou’s throat tighten.
Just then—footsteps echoed from down the hall.
It sounded like a guest being led over by a maid.
Ruan Tang panicked. She tugged at Lu Chengzhou’s shirt in desperation and pleaded:
“Chengzhou-gege, let me go… please… gege…”
