- Chapter 50 - A Mischievous System and a Stolen Kiss
The system offered a spiteful suggestion.
【So many men in the world — if he’s no good, just switch!
If Luo Qingli doesn’t care for you, let him crawl. That little prince seems promising — why not consider him?
Haixi is famous for its fruits. Marry there and you’ll eat rare, delicious fruit every day!】
Ruan Tang’s ears pricked at the mention of tasty food. She felt a sudden flutter of temptation and actually began to seriously consider the logistics of “changing husbands.”
Luo Qingli, watching this, went pale with displeasure. Without another word, he grabbed her arm, ignoring the commotion and the guests, and strode straight for the backyard.
…
Ruan Tang was flung onto the bed so hard she landed with a thud. The mattress and quilts were soft, so it didn’t hurt—yet her skirt rode up, revealing a smooth, pale calf.
At her ankle hung a delicate red cord threaded with a tiny bell. (t/n: the small red cord with a bell at Ruan Tang’s ankle is a common decorative charm in some historical settings — it can be worn for good luck or simply as an ornament.)
The contrast of her porcelain skin and the bright red loop only made the little ornament stand out more.
It looked like a carefully carved trinket—too precious to touch, yet it made one want to possess it, to tint that fair skin with their own color.
The usually icy, indifferent prince now struggled to hide a surge of desire; even his long, cold phoenix-eyes darkened with something dangerous.
He forced his breath steady and spoke in a hoarse voice.
“Have you made your mischief enough?”
Ruan Tang seemed frightened by his tone and instinctively drew back into the bed, stray strands of hair falling against her tender neck, black against pale skin.
“I… I wasn’t making mischief…” she whispered in a soft, vulnerable voice.
Luo Qingli held her in place, staring at her intently. Then, suddenly, he leaned in and pinned her between the mattress and his chest.
A faint medicinal scent hung in the air.
Up close for the first time, Ruan Tang took him in properly: his complexion was as pale and severe as jade, his features carved fine, his dark phoenix-eyes deep and entrancing, the brows and mouth carrying a chill that set him almost apart from the world.
But now, anger had brightened those eyes and dragged him back into the human realm, staining him with the color of ordinary passions.
He asked coldly, “You claimed you were devoted to me, yet today you barely looked at me. Is this what you call ‘liking’?”
Ruan Tang shrank back again. Luo Qingli’s gaze went even colder. He pressed a hand to the small hollow of her waist and forced her to face him, compelling her to meet his evasive eyes.
“You are my princess consort, yet you act unseemly—so intimate with the border general and the foreign prince. What sort of decorum is this?”
More sharp questions came. Ruan Tang panicked; tears gathered like mist in the corners of her eyes. She murmured, “I… I was wrong…”
Seeing her submit and apologize, the knot in Luo Qingli’s chest loosened a bit; his expression softened.
But his relief was built on a misunderstanding.
【Tongtong, I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have hesitated — I’m changing husbands! Boohoo!】
The system crowed with delight.
Good girl Ruan Tang finally knows how to fight back — excellent!
Heh heh, dog prince, get to shouting at Tongtong! Scare Tongtong away! Wife running off? Hahaha!
Luo Qingli had no idea what the system was plotting. He only felt the odd thumping of his heart as he held Ruan Tang so close. Her pink earlobe—soft, warm, tempting—hovered just inches from his lips.
Almost involuntarily, he lowered his head. His thin lips parted and brushed that tiny, tender piece of flesh.
The sensation was different than he expected—so soft…
His Adam’s apple bobbed; his eyes darkened.
“Mm—”
A small, sweet sound escaped from the girl’s lips, and it snapped him awake.
—What had he just done?
He had just acted with such intimacy toward the one person he’d always held contempt for. How had he become like this?
Luo Qingli’s jade-like cheeks flushed a thin rose all the way to his ears.
Flustered and not bothering with propriety, he bolted from the room as if fleeing.
Ruan Tang sat on the bed, clutching her reddened earlobe, feeling both wronged and bewildered.
“Why are people in this world so fond of biting?” she complained plaintively.
Luo Qingli fled to his study.
Since marrying Ruan Tang, he had never once slept in the bedchamber with her—always taking rest in his study. But that night he tossed and turned and could not sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw those misty peach-blossom eyes; it maddened him.
The next day—
“Hahaha—were you out thieving last night? Look at those panda eyes!” Tuoba Hong laughed and slapped his thigh, oblivious to his friend’s murderous expression.
“What are you doing coming to my manor every day? Are you pining after someone? Sneaking over to see them?”
Luo Qingli shot a glare that could kill.
Tuoba Hong winced and quickly explained, pretending to be casual.
“I’m not pining after you, Brother Luo—just came to pay a visit.” He lifted his teacup, taking a sip, trying to act calm.
“If you’re not sleeping, looking so haggard, you must be physically unwell. Want me to send for the imperial physician to give you some tonics?”
Luo Qingli gave him a sharp look and sneered.
“How do you know I’m not sleepless because I spent the night tending to a beauty’s embrace?”
Tuoba Hong spit the tea he’d just sipped all over the place.
He stared at Luo Qingli in disbelief, nearly speechless.
Luo Qingli narrowed his cold eyes and said smoothly, “She is my lawful wife. Wasting a night together is only human. Any objections, Tuoba?”
Tuoba Hong’s face went an odd mix of red, white, then green. In the end, unable to meet his friend’s piercing stare, he looked at the wet cuff and swallowed bitterly.
“You’re absolutely right, Brother Luo. I… have no objections.”
He rose, embarrassed and a bit dazed.
“Excuse me, I’ll go change into clean clothes.”
Luo Qingli watched his friend’s lone back until the figure disappeared, his gaze growing heavier.
…
Tuoba Hong couldn’t figure out why he felt so unsettled.
They were just a married couple—what business was it of his? And the princess consort had quietly pined for Luo Qingli for years; now that her feelings were rewarded, he should be happy for them.
But Tuoba Hong found himself unable to smile. It felt as if some heavy weight pressed at the corners of his mouth.
