- Chapter 90 - Sparks at the Dorm Gates
The long kiss finally ended. Chi Cheng leaned against the pale curve of Ruan Tang’s neck, his voice hoarse.
“Tangtang, don’t leave me. I’ll lose my mind.”
He meant it.
He really would go mad.
Ruan Tang’s lashes trembled. She guiltily chose not to answer.
Once his favorability reached full, she’d have to move on to the next man. Leaving him was inevitable.
Without her reassurance, Chi Cheng’s expression dimmed, but he couldn’t bring himself to push her. Instead, he only tightened his arms, as though he could fuse the girl into his bones and blood, never to be separated again.
…
Chi Cheng drove her back to the dorm building.
The motorcycle came to a halt, and as he removed his helmet, his eyes immediately fell on Lu He, standing at the entrance.
His brows knit in irritation.
He remembered this one. He’d seen him at that mixer. The same guy who’d dared to hold Tangtang’s hand. He’d already written that down in his little mental ledger of grudges.
So when he looked at Lu He now, his gaze carried undisguised hostility.
But Lu He wasn’t the type to be rattled.
At the sound of the motorcycle’s roar, he glanced over. His gaze paused only briefly before a practiced smile curved his lips, his eyes crinkling as he walked toward them.
Or rather—walked toward Ruan Tang.
He ignored Chi Cheng’s murderous glare completely and stopped before the girl, offering her a gentle smile.
“Tangtang.”
Still seated behind Chi Cheng, Ruan Tang was struggling with her helmet.
It was a new one Chi Cheng had bought her—pink, in stark contrast to his sleek, all-black motorcycle, yet perfectly matching her own soft aura.
Two little pointed ears sat on top, making it look like a kitten’s head.
The girl fumbled, her hair caught, her face flushing scarlet in embarrassment. She looked even sweeter, even more irresistible.
Lu He couldn’t help but chuckle. Raising his slender, elegant arm, he reached out to help her.
But before he could touch her, a strong, tanned arm abruptly shoved his hand away.
With painstaking care, Chi Cheng himself removed the helmet for her, then smoothed her hair back into place.
“Mm… thank you.”
The girl ducked her head shyly, hiding her flushed cheeks.
“What’s the point of thanking your boyfriend?”
Chi Cheng deliberately emphasized boyfriend, making sure someone in particular heard it.
Lu He’s eyes narrowed, though his smile remained unchanged. His hand at his side, however, clenched so tightly his knuckles strained, veins standing out across his skin.
Still not satisfied, Chi Cheng swung off the motorcycle. He gave Lu He a crooked, mocking smirk and drawled:
“Hey, move. You’re in the way.”
A flash of cold glinted in Lu He’s eyes.
But since Ruan Tang was present, he held himself back. Without a word, he shifted aside.
Chi Cheng was like a beast—no, like a king among beasts.
Every inch of him radiated aggression, bristling with sharp edges, as though the world itself should bow before him.
Yet when he stood before Ruan Tang, all that ferocity disappeared. In its place was the gentlest, softest version of himself.
“Come on, I’ll carry you down.”
He had carried her off the bike earlier as well, so Ruan Tang was already used to it. Without thinking much, she stretched out her slender, snow-white arms and said sweetly:
“Okay.”
Chi Cheng’s grin was arrogant and wicked, but his movements were sure as he swept her into his arms and set her down on the ground.
Lu He, watching from the side, lost his smile without realizing it. For once, a rare edge of cold malice flickered across his face.
The sight of the girl trusting another man so completely was like a needle stabbing into his chest—sharp, constant, unrelenting with every breath.
Once she was steady, Ruan Tang finally remembered to glance at him.
“Senior, did you need something from me?”
Lu He swallowed down the bitterness. He held out the paper bag in his hand.
“That book I mentioned last time—I brought it for you.”
Ruan Tang peeked inside, her eyes lighting up as her smile bloomed.
“Thank you, Senior! I’ll finish it quickly and return it to you!”
“No rush,” Lu He said smoothly. “Return it whenever you like. I still have plenty of out-of-print books at home. If Tangtang wants, you could come by and read them.”
Borrowing books—Chi Cheng could tolerate.
But luring his Tangtang to another man’s house?
Did he look like someone who could tolerate that?!
Chi Cheng stepped in front of her, shielding her with his body as his glare bore down on Lu He.
“Inviting a girl alone to your place isn’t exactly appropriate, don’t you think?”
Lu He’s smile never wavered, but the frost in his gaze could no longer be hidden.
“I only wanted her to read the books she likes. They’re old, they require special storage—if I bring them out, the pages could oxidize and crumble.”
“Ha. Who’d believe that? You just want an excuse to get Tangtang into your house.”
Lu He gave a derisive laugh. “Petty men always measure others by their own vile standards.” (t/n: a proverb — “以小人之心度君子之腹,” meaning a narrow-minded man assumes others share his motives.)
Chi Cheng’s gaze turned icy, his tone sharp with warning.
“I’m no petty man. And you’re no gentleman. Don’t think I haven’t noticed the way you look at Tangtang.”
Of course he noticed—he himself had once looked at her the same way.
That obsessive, feverish gaze, equal parts reverence and madness. The kind of gaze that wanted to keep this soft little rabbit forever caged in his arms, to kiss and claim every inch of her tender skin.
The thought of this man looking at his soft Tangtang like that made his mind spiral with violent, ugly impulses.
The two men stood tall and striking, though they could not have been more different—one cold, one fiery; one brutal, one refined.
The air between them crackled, sharp as drawn swords, a storm brewing.
Passersby—mostly girls—soon gathered, whispering excitedly.
“Wait, isn’t that Lu He, the History Department genius? What’s he doing at the girls’ dorm?”
“Obviously to see Ruan Tang! Thanks to her, our dorm has become a literal hot spot—like a drama shoot, with all these gorgeous guys showing up!”
“Oh my god! Isn’t that Chi Cheng from the Black Cat band?! He’s involved with Ruan Tang too? But what about her official boyfriend, Qi Guang?”
“Girl, you must be new here. Qi Guang’s old news—swept off the stage ages ago. This is Chi Cheng’s era now!”
“Ruan Tang must’ve saved the galaxy in her last life! She dumped the sunshine-sports-god type, now she’s with the aloof, bad-boy band leader, and still has the gentle campus god secretly pining for her… Talk about blessed!”
The crowd’s eyes practically sparkled.
Meanwhile, at the center of it all, Ruan Tang remained oblivious.
She didn’t even notice that Lu He and Chi Cheng were on the verge of fighting.
Because the moment the book was in her hands, her bibliophile instincts took over. She eagerly cracked it open, eyes drinking in the words with greedy devotion.
Lu He noticed, sighing helplessly. He shoved Chi Cheng aside with a cool glance and bent toward her, voice soft.
“Tangtang, the lighting isn’t good here. Save it for your dorm, okay?”
But Ruan Tang didn’t hear a word. She was utterly absorbed in the pages, completely lost to the world.
With no choice, Lu He slipped the book from her hands, closed it, and tucked it back into the bag.
“Confiscated. I’ll give it back to you tomorrow in daylight.”
She pouted, lips trembling, peach-blossom eyes shimmering with unshed tears and unfulfilled longing.
“Give it back…”
