- Chapter 114 - The Man Who Answered Her Phone
Ruan Tang’s cheeks burned red as she covered her overheated ears and took a step back, about to answer—
But she realized Ao Wang had already lost too much blood and fainted.
Soon, the ambulance arrived and rushed him into emergency care.
Ruan Tang paid the medical expenses on his behalf.
The doctor said the wound wasn’t too deep. He had only a mild concussion and just needed to stay under observation.
She stayed by his bedside, exhaustion tugging at her. Her little head kept nodding forward, fighting sleep.
A nurse walked by and smiled.
“Don’t worry, your boyfriend’s fine. He’ll wake up soon. But you, if you don’t go home and rest, you’ll collapse first.”
Ruan Tang shook her head quickly, face flushing deeper.
“He—he’s not my boyfriend. I’ve only actually met him once…”
The nurse blinked.
“Eh? Then why are you still keeping watch?”
Ruan Tang’s small hands twisted the edge of his blanket. She looked at the unconscious Ao Wang.
“If he woke up and found himself in the hospital with no one he knew around him… all alone… wouldn’t that be too pitiful?”
The nurse’s eyes softened.
This little girl, soft and obedient, still carried a kind of innocent naivety about the world. Yet at the same time, she was so gentle, so kind.
Even wearing a mask that hid most of her face, just her pair of peach blossom eyes alone was enough to be called beautiful.
The nurse thought to herself—if even she, as another girl, felt a sudden urge to marry her, what more would men feel?
She patted Ruan Tang’s shoulder, lowering her voice.
“Then don’t stay too late. Be careful on your way back, and remember to tell your family so they won’t worry.”
Ruan Tang’s eyes widened in horror.
“Ah!! Right!! I forgot to tell A-Xiu!!”
The nurse’s expression instantly turned gossipy.
A-Xiu? That sounds like a boy’s name.
She glanced again at the man lying unconscious on the bed and sighed regretfully.
Ah… too bad, you’re a step too late.
Just then, she noticed his fingers twitch slightly. His sharp brows furrowed even as he lay still.
Is he waking up?
The nurse longed to stay and watch the drama unfold, but duty called. She reluctantly turned and left to continue her rounds.
Ruan Tang checked the time. It was almost eleven!
Her phone showed several missed calls and unread messages—all from Qi Xiu and Ji Jing.
She was about to call back when Qi Xiu’s name flashed across the screen again.
Hurriedly slipping out of the ward, she lowered her voice as she answered.
Meanwhile, inside the room, Ao Wang slowly opened his long, narrow eyes. His gaze shifted toward the half-open door, complicated emotions flickering within.
He had actually woken when the nurse was comforting Ruan Tang.
Though still hazy, he had clearly heard her words.
Something inside his chest softened and caved in.
He had always been alone—people called him a lone wolf.
But now, for the first time, he felt the sting of loneliness.
Because Ruan Tang was not beside him.
She was outside the door, her soft voice coaxing someone else through the phone.
That “A-Xiu”… was he family? A brother? A cousin?
Or… a live-in boyfriend?
At that thought, Ao Wang’s hand clenched into a fist, veins standing out against his skin.
Outside, Ruan Tang held the phone away from her ear like a frightened kitten, but even at a distance she could still hear Qi Xiu’s furious roar.
“Do you have any idea how worried I was?! I was this close to calling the police!”
Noise filled the background on his side, his voice breathless from running. He had been searching the streets for her.
When the call connected, the moment he heard her voice, Qi Xiu sank down right there on the crowded sidewalk, overwhelmed with relief.
His hoarse voice carried the raw edge of someone who had just brushed past disaster.
“Jiejie, please… next time, at least tell me in advance. You nearly scared me to death…”
While she hadn’t picked up, his mind had been full of worst-case scenarios. The panic had almost driven him insane.
Ruan Tang felt guilty, lowering her voice.
“I’m sorry… it all happened so suddenly, I forgot to say anything…”
“What happened exactly?”
So she explained briefly about finding an injured man outside the bar.
Qi Xiu raked a hand through his hair in frustration.
“Why bother with someone like that?! Just leave him on the street! You already did more than enough by calling 120!” (t/n: 120 is the emergency number for ambulances in China.)
“But…”
“Which hospital are you at? I’m coming now.”
She had no choice but to tell him the name.
“I’m close by. Don’t move around. Stay put and wait for me.”
When the call ended, Ruan Tang sighed softly.
Uuuh… I got scolded again.
Just then, a deep, magnetic voice sounded beside her.
“Sorry.”
Startled, she looked up and saw Ao Wang standing at the doorway, gauze still wrapped around his head, his eyes burning as they fixed on her.
“Eh? Why are you out of bed—doesn’t it hurt?”
“Doesn’t hurt.”
Ao Wang grinned, a touch roguish. Inside, though, he was thinking:
It does hurt a little. But when I see you… it doesn’t.
“Thank you for saving me. And… sorry for troubling you.”
Ruan Tang hurriedly waved her hands, flustered.
“No, no, you didn’t trouble me. A-Xiu didn’t mean it like that…”
Ao Wang’s gaze darkened. He was just about to ask who this “A-Xiu” really was when her phone rang again.
The screen displayed Ji Jing’s name.
Ruan Tang’s little face crumpled. She didn’t dare answer.
Qi Xiu, normally so obedient, had just yelled at her.
Ji Jing would definitely be worse.
But the ringtone pressed down like an execution drum. Her hand shook, but she couldn’t bring herself to decline.
“I’ll answer for you.”
Before she could react, Ao Wang snatched the phone and tapped “accept,” putting it on speaker.
Ji Jing’s voice instantly spilled into the hospital corridor.
“Miss? Where are you? I’m at your doorstep—why haven’t you come home?”
Ao Wang’s tone was cool, edged with faint annoyance.
“She’s not coming home tonight.”
The other side fell silent for a moment.
Then Ji Jing’s voice came through, clipped and icy, each word bitten out:
“Who the hell are you?”
Ruan Tang’s peach blossom eyes widened in shock.
It was the first time she’d ever heard Ji Jing curse.
He had always been refined, reserved, speaking with calm restraint.
But now, his composure had shattered, replaced by something sharp and terrifying.
“I’m her friend.”
Ao Wang deliberately stressed the word friend, lips curling into a smirk as he glanced at Ruan Tang.
“We had a great time. She doesn’t want to go home tonight.”
Before Ji Jing could explode, Ruan Tang snatched the phone back.
“Ji Jing-gege, I—I’m staying at Yan Yan’s house tonight, so don’t wait up for me!”
Ji Jing’s brows furrowed tight, his face dark as thunder.
“Miss Tang Tang, who was that man? Why did he answer your call? What did he mean by ‘having a great time’? What exactly did you two do?”
