- Chapter 179 - The Sweetest Theft
That night, Ruan Tang woke up halfway through her sleep, stomach growling with hunger. She tiptoed out of bed and crept downstairs to find something to eat.
Her fair, delicate arms were loaded with a pile of snacks she had scavenged, and with a piece of milk candy tucked in her mouth, she happily prepared to sneak back to her room.
But as she climbed the stairs, she suddenly bumped straight into someone’s arms.
“Tangtang?”
Gu Leng had been tossing and turning all night, unable to sleep.
Knowing that the girl he longed for was sleeping just on the other side of a thin wall, he couldn’t quiet his heart.
So the moment Ruan Tang opened her door, he noticed.
And now, he had caught the little snack thief red-handed.
Ruan Tang jumped in fright, nearly losing her balance, but a strong arm quickly wrapped around her, pulling her tightly into his embrace.
“Careful.”
The man’s deep, magnetic voice rumbled above her head, making her heart skip.
Her cheeks flushed red, and clutching his shirt with her small hands, she puffed up her voice to threaten him in a soft but fierce way.
“You’re not allowed to say anything!!”
Gu Leng blinked in surprise. “Say what?”
Lowering her head, her whole face was red, even her earlobes dyed in an alluring shade of pink.
“That I… snuck out in the middle of the night to eat snacks…”
She had clearly eaten plenty at dinner.
But for some reason, she got hungry again at night. Ugh, if Tongtong found out, he’d definitely make fun of me.
A low chuckle came from above.
Ruan Tang’s shame deepened. Her tiny hand tugged harder at his collar, glaring at him angrily.
“You’re laughing at me!”
Gu Leng fought to keep his lips from twitching upward, but it was a losing battle.
His magnetic voice carried a trace of laughter, making it all the more charming.
“Sorry, I wasn’t laughing at you. I just think you’re too cute.”
Her pout deepened. With her cheeks stuffed from the milk candy, she looked exactly like a round, fluffy little hamster.
Gu Leng’s gaze fell to her soft, glistening lips. His face flushed, betraying a rare hint of shyness despite his usual calm and reserved aura.
In a low voice, he murmured, “I’m hungry too.”
Ruan Tang, being as obedient as she was, immediately held out the bag of candies from her arms with reluctance.
“Here, I’ll give you a bag. These are my favorite White Rabbit milk candies. I only have this one bag, so don’t ask for more!!”
(t/n: White Rabbit is a famous Chinese brand of creamy milk candies, a nostalgic snack for many children.)
In truth, she had another bag hidden in her room—but she wasn’t about to tell him that!
That was her secret stash.
Gu Leng stared at her delicate face, eyes dazed.
“I don’t need that many. Just one is enough.”
“Eh? Just one?”
The little glutton secretly let out a breath of relief, then beamed at him with a bright, guileless smile.
“Then I’ll be generous and give you three!”
Just as she was about to rip open the bag, his hand tilted her chin up.
In the dim light, she couldn’t make out his suddenly close, handsome face, only the narrow phoenix eyes filled with emotions she couldn’t decipher.
They looked like they were about to devour her whole.
A sudden heat pressed against her lips. His breath enveloped her.
He didn’t eat her—but he did steal her candy.
By the time the milk candy melted away completely, Gu Leng finally pulled back, his face flushed.
The tall, handsome youth lifted a hand to cover his lips, his gaze shifting away, his ears burning red.
He stole a furtive glance at Ruan Tang, his voice hoarse as he muttered an apology.
“Sorry. I couldn’t hold back.”
After a pause, he added in an even lower voice—
“It’s so sweet.”
The sweetness of the candy lingered on his tongue, mixed with the soft fragrance of the girl, leaving him completely addicted.
Ruan Tang, breath unsteady, fog clouding her eyes, still hadn’t recovered from being flustered.
Hearing that, her shame flared. She threw the whole pile of snacks at him, then bolted back into her room.
Gu Leng stood there, watching her silhouette vanish behind the door. His gaze dropped, silently savoring the sweetness still lingering on his lips.
Tonight, he wouldn’t be getting any sleep.
The next morning.
While Ruan Tang was still curled up in bed, Ruan Tong had already kicked open Gu Leng’s door.
Gu Leng hadn’t slept at all, but he was in high spirits, already dressed neatly, adjusting his collar in front of the mirror.
With his phoenix eyes and thin lips, his cold, austere features should’ve looked unapproachable, but the faint curve at the corner of his mouth made him dangerously attractive.
That faint smile, however, vanished completely the moment he saw Ruan Tong.
“You should knock before entering. Don’t you understand basic manners?”
Ruan Tong leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, glaring at the man inside with open disdain.
“Tch, what’s there to fix up? You could just walk onto a runway as a male model.”
Though mocking, his words weren’t wrong.
Gu Leng’s tall, upright build wasn’t overly thin, his lean muscles hidden under his clothes. Coupled with his aloof, ascetic looks, he really could step onto a catwalk.
The kind who could make even a burlap sack look stylish.
The more Ruan Tong thought about it, the more irritated he got, and his tone turned harsher.
“It’s already morning. Why haven’t you left yet?”
Gu Leng cast him a cold sidelong glance.
“Ruan Tong, do you hate me that much?”
“Yeah. I do.”
Ruan Tong disliked anyone who tried to steal his sister.
And with Gu Leng, it was both old grudges and new resentments piled together—so naturally, his dislike was stronger.
Gu Leng stepped closer, eyes sharp, his voice laced with icy mockery.
“So, are you planning on letting that Wei Quan kid become your brother-in-law instead?”
He had once been that age himself. He knew how prideful young men could be.
Even close friends would compete over everything—so how could anyone willingly accept the other as their brother-in-law?
Sure enough, Ruan Tong immediately exploded.
“He wouldn’t dare!!”
Gu Leng patted him on the shoulder.
“Compared to him, I’m much more suitable. Even your uncle and aunt like me.”
Ruan Tong’s face twisted with disgust.
“Ugh, how can you sound so fake?”
Gu Leng: “…”
“What, you think you’re the only good man out there?”
Ruan Tong smugly slapped his hand away, lifting his chin arrogantly.
“Men chasing my sister could line up all the way to France. Who do you think you are?”
Gu Leng: “…”
In the end, Gu Leng was still kicked out by Ruan Tong.
Ruan Tang slept until ten, only to be jolted awake by her brother’s shouting.
“I got it!! I got it!!!”
Rubbing her bleary eyes, she stumbled to the door and found her silly younger brother running around the room, waving his phone in excitement.
“Tongtong? What did you get?”
Ruan Tong ran up to her, shoving his screen in her face.
“Look! I won a spot in the weekend’s Final Showdown offline fan tournament! Out of hundreds of thousands, only ten were picked—and I actually got one!!!”
Ruan Tang was still half-asleep, mumbling in confusion.
“Fan tournament?”
“Yeah! And get this—it’s being held right here in T City! Some game streamers and pro players are going too, playing friendly matches with fans! I might even get to meet my idol!”
Ruan Tang tilted her head curiously.
“Who’s your idol?”
“You definitely wouldn’t know. It’s Flame from Team YRN! He’s insanely good!”
(t/n: “Final Showdown” is the in-universe competitive video game. Flame (Yanri/炎日) is a professional esports player idolized by Ruan Tong.)
