- Chapter 120 - The Gentlemanly Professor with a Sinister Side (6) Mentorship, Manipulation, or Marriage?
Clang!
The sudden eye contact caught him off guard.
As if scalded by something cold, Wen Yuli dropped his phone. It tumbled down several steps of the lecture hall stairs.
A few nearby students glanced over in confusion.
Someone in the front row picked up the fallen phone.
Wen Yuli pressed his lips tightly together, body stiff as a board. His gaze followed the phone’s descent like he’d just committed some unspeakable sin and was terrified of being exposed.
What he had said earlier was purely out of concern—he was worried certain students might cross boundaries and harass or try to seduce Su Cizhen. He hadn’t expected to be played by her instead.
That didn’t mean he was agreeing to date her.
A professor dating a student—unethical.
When the phone was picked up, it had gone dark.
He let out a heavy breath, thankful no one noticed, then quickly stuffed the phone into his pocket.
When he looked up again, he saw Su Cizhen twirling a stylus between her fingers, cheek propped in one soft palm, eyes curved mischievously as she stared at him without blinking.
Wen Yuli couldn’t stop himself from messaging her again.
【Focus on the lecture. Don’t let your mind wander.】
The intention was to get her to stop looking at him with that warm, admiring gaze. It was too much.
But when she actually looked away and didn’t respond, a strange irritation bubbled up inside him.
【I can’t date you. I have no intention of starting a romantic relationship now, and I won’t—at least not until you graduate. You should focus on your studies.】
【You said it yourself—it’s admiration. I have to tell you: staying clear-headed throughout your college life is one of the keys to success.】
【Don’t waste your time on trivial relationships. You’re always welcome to come to my office or the company to discuss academic matters. I guarantee it’ll benefit you.】
【……】
While everyone else was watching the lecture up front, Wen Yuli was conspicuously on his phone in the back.
Professor Huang’s voice crackled louder through the mic, laced with irritation:
“You in the back with your head down—yeah, you! If you’re not interested, get out and stand in the hall!”
Damn kid, coming to his class just to cause trouble!
Get lost! Now!
Thankfully, Professor Huang didn’t know Wen Yuli was messaging the prized student he himself had been eyeing. If he did, he might have chased him with a stick.
Wen Yuli tucked his phone away shamelessly and stayed put.
Professor Huang clicked his tongue but didn’t push it. As long as the student was listening, he could let it go.
For the first time ever, the usually verbose Professor Huang ended class on time. He was just about to call his favorite student into the lounge for a chat when—
A tall, composed figure beat him to it.
“Su Cizhen, come to my office for a moment.”
Wen Yuli stood at the classroom exit, waiting patiently for Su Cizhen to gather her things, worried she might not know the way.
Students were stunned, jaws dropping all around.
Once the two famously strict professors had left, the room burst into whispers.
“No way. Did Professor Wen just swoop in and steal her?”
“Serves Old Man Huang right for bullying her. Choosing Professor Wen makes total sense!”
“Am I the only one who thinks… Professor Wen was staring at her a bit too intently?”
“Whatever. Su Cizhen’s stunning—who wouldn’t look? But let’s keep it fair, okay? No dirty tricks, people!”
While the finance students were busy gossiping, one literature major sat frozen in shock.
Professor?
The guy he’d added to the group chat earlier?
Wasn’t he just another hot guy in their student circle?
He frantically scrolled through the chat history, trying to find evidence of doctored screenshots—anything to prove it was fake.
Nope. It was real.
They were actually in a relationship.
His scalp tingled.
The world is ending.
Meanwhile, Su Cizhen obediently followed the tall man with long legs and sharp features, backpack slung over her shoulder. To the casual observer, she looked like a model student who helped the professor grade papers.
Once they reached a quiet hallway, Su Cizhen sped up to walk beside him.
“Professor Wen.”
He turned to her, composed and distant, his elegant features carved like a statue. The aura he gave off was aristocratic and cool—impossible to approach.
“What is it?”
Su Cizhen’s lips curled into a sweet smile. Her eyes arched like crescent moons, but her words were anything but innocent.
“Doesn’t Professor Wen know that attending class with a girl, texting her nonstop, and staring at her are things boyfriends do?”
“What are we going to talk about in your office? If it’s not about dating you, I’ve got nothing else to say.”
She was relentless.
Wen Yuli’s back was soaked in cold sweat.
After a pause, he countered, flatly:
“It’s not like that. A responsible professor also cares for his students. I just happen to know about your family situation—that’s why I pay more attention to you.”
He opened the office door and gestured for her to sit. Then he turned to boil some water for tea.
Seeing her sit down obediently, his tone unconsciously softened.
“Su Cizhen, don’t treat your professor like this. As long as you study diligently, I’ll help with the company’s issues. I’ll also speak with your mother.”
He’d already looked into it. Su Bingkun and his wife had been begging around for connections, pressuring their daughter to save the company. They weren’t exactly loving parents.
Su Cizhen held the teacup delicately and took a small sip.
Her eyes, dewy with steam, looked even clearer and more innocent—utterly captivating.
“Then let the company go bankrupt. I just want to do this and that with Professor Wen.”
“Mind your words, Su Cizhen.”
Wen Yuli had no comeback.
And strangely—no anger either.
So he changed the subject.
“You’re in second year? Has your academic advisor been assigned yet? If not, you’ll work with me.”
“The advisor list came out last week,” Su Cizhen replied.
Wen Yuli pulled out his phone and made a call. Five minutes later, the departmental group chat showed an updated message.
“Doesn’t matter. You’ll work with me. Your situation’s unique, and your personality is… difficult. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with anyone else handling it. Add me on WeChat. Save my number too.”
Apparently too lazy for small talk, he handed her his unlocked phone. The home screen was pristine—just essential apps and system defaults.
Su Cizhen tilted her head while inputting her info.
“So, Professor Wen lets me see his phone now? Is that a girlfriend privilege?”
“No. Don’t overthink it,” he said, face expressionless.
Beneath her obedient exterior, Su Cizhen had the soul of a little rebel—something Wen Yuli hadn’t anticipated.
Which was precisely why he couldn’t sit back and do nothing. There weren’t many men who could resist a face like hers and still stay composed.
He was confident he could guide her back on track—mold her into Jiang University’s top graduate.
With her talent and determination, reviving a failing company was small potatoes. One day, she’d helm a business empire.
And he—Wen Yuli—would personally oversee her rise.
He thought long and hard, finally convincing himself that his intentions were noble.
His attention to Su Cizhen wasn’t inappropriate. He simply saw her as his prized seedling.
Of course you protect your crops from pigs. A little watering and fertilizing? That’s just being a good gardener.
To fend off those wild pigs running loose on campus, Wen Yuli took her out for lunch, then drove her personally to the library.
The library was packed in the afternoon. Every seat was full. The few remaining were surrounded by chattering boys and girls.
Wen Yuli frowned and stopped her.
“Come back to the office with me. I’ll open up a private study room for you.”
Mini Theater
Wen (out loud): “Give her the skills, not shortcuts. She mustn’t develop bad habits.”
Wen (in his head): “Sooner or later, the empire will belong to Su. I’ve already drawn the map.”
