- Chapter 141 - The Pure-Hearted Zombie King Who Protects Lone Humans (8) Even Now, He’s Gentle
Lu Yunhe groped around until he pulled out the water-purification knife, then placed Su Ci’s hand around the hilt and guided it to his chest.
After so many sleepless days of relentless exertion and with barely any food in his system, his body was limp and powerless—he couldn’t even muster the strength to push the blade in himself.
Commander Du and Instructor Li quietly turned away.
Even the most mentally resilient person would feel this kind of pain.
Some students instinctively formed a circle around Lu Yunhe, while others remained silent and neutral.
In the heavy silence, Yan Shengnan’s shrill voice pierced through, jarringly out of place. Her words might have been harsh, but more than a few people silently agreed with her.
Duan Yiyi couldn’t hold back any longer.
“Yan Shengnan, don’t go too far! If it weren’t for the ‘monster’ you keep calling him, you’d be long dead by now!”
The human body can survive without food for about a week—and they’d been trapped here for over two weeks.
Seeing that most people weren’t speaking up, Yan Shengnan grew bolder and stepped forward, aiming her accusations at Su Ci.
“What are you waiting for? Too heartbroken to kill your precious man? Gonna ruin your life over a guy?”
“I thought you were different from those man-obsessed girls. Turns out you’re just as dumb—willing to lose your mind for some guy. People like them should sacrifice themselves for the group!”
“Shing—”
A thin whistle sliced through the air.
Su Ci’s water-purification knife brushed past Yan Shengnan’s cheek and slammed into the marble pillar behind her with a metallic clang.
Yan Shengnan’s heart nearly stopped. She stared at Su Ci, stunned.
“Are you crazy?! You’d really attack your own kind over a zombie?!”
“You really think he can still save food for you like he used to, looking like that?”
“I don’t get you girls. You’ve got two hands and two feet. Why do you need a man to survive?”
Zhihan stepped up and slapped Yan Shengnan—twice.
“You don’t rely on men? Great, then cough up everything you’ve eaten that Chief Lu gave you!”
Duan Yiyi joined in, and soon the three of them were in a full-blown scuffle. But in a world where food was scarce and energy precious, no one stepped in to break it up.
Commander Du’s face was grim as he picked up the knife. His voice was low and somber:
“Su Ci, we understand how you feel… but it’s best to honor his wishes.”
“Let him go with dignity.”
Su Ci didn’t take the knife.
Instead, she lifted the feverish, unconscious Lu Yunhe and leaned him gently against her shoulder.
“I’m sorry. I can’t do it. I’ll take him away—somewhere isolated, where we can live out our days.”
Instructor Li hesitated.
“But…”
He didn’t think they would be able to “live.” Just surviving outside was already nearly impossible. When Lu Yunhe had still been lucid, he’d asked them to take care of her.
But there was something inexplicably convincing about this girl.
In the end, the instructors let her go.
Maybe it was their own selfishness too. For those who bring warmth to others, they shouldn’t be left to freeze in the snow.
It wasn’t until their figures disappeared in the distance that the students in the cafeteria finally grasped what had just happened. Voices rose in furious protest against Yan Shengnan.
“How could you drive Su Ci away?! She didn’t do anything wrong. What’s so terrible about being grateful to the chief instructor? You don’t deserve your share of the food!”
“Ungrateful brat—that old saying about eating someone’s food and then cursing them afterward? That’s you. Unbelievable!”
“Su Ci’s honestly the best of us. Quietly helping the wounded and instructors without complaint. Unlike some people who just bully others into doing their dirty work.”
Hearing the wave of criticism, the frustration Yan Shengnan had already been bottling up plummeted to rock bottom.
Irritated, she snapped back,
“And what, you’re all so much better than me? While she was still here, none of you said a word. But the second she’s gone, you all suddenly grow a conscience?”
“Tch. If you feel that bad, it’s not too late—go after her. Go on, I dare you!”
Dead silence.
No one moved.
Only Zhihan, holding her unconscious boyfriend, slowly stood up.
“Fine. Then we’re leaving too. I can’t stay in this place anymore.”
Even Chief Lu hadn’t been spared from public scorn. She couldn’t help but worry that if her boyfriend couldn’t fight off the zombie virus, those people would kill him without hesitation.
And if that happened—then she’d become a zombie with him.
Say she was just a lovesick girl? So what?
That boy who worked three part-time jobs nonstop just to buy her cake, dresses, and a necklace—he was worth it.
Watching her walk away without a second thought, Yan Shengnan spat bitterly.
“Tch! Coddled little princess. Serves you right if you die out there.”
Outside the school’s north gate was a crabapple-themed garden. It had been built with pavilions and cabins for tourists to visit and take photos. Su Ci picked one of the old-fashioned wooden huts and laid Lu Yunhe down inside.
His mutation was progressing rapidly, but he was still different from other zombies. His wheat-colored skin hadn’t rotted or festered—it had hardened and turned smooth and cool, like carved jade.
His face hadn’t changed much either. His heart had simply stopped, and his blood no longer flowed.
Su Ci just pretended he’d gotten a fancy whitening spa treatment.
Worried that he’d wake up and go wandering off in confusion, Su Ci didn’t leave to search for food or water. She sat quietly by his side and dozed off before she realized it.
She was exhausted. Cold, starving, and bone-tired.
She had no idea how long she slept—but she woke up to something gnawing on her.
Wet, sticky pressure touched her neck and hands.
Lu Yunhe, now fully turned, blinked his foggy gray eyes and pulled her into his arms, sucking and nibbling at her cheeks while slobbering over her face.
Newborn zombies weren’t the brightest.
After a couple of hard, noisy sucks, he even puckered his lips and blew softly, as if to soothe her.
If he could speak, he might have cooed like a toddler: “Blow on it and it won’t hurt… pffff…”
When he noticed Su Ci had woken up, he looked delighted. He rubbed his forehead against her damp cheek, the stiff bristles of his buzz cut tickling her skin.
“Waah… mmph…”
A couple of weird syllables escaped his dry throat. A faint blush even rose on his pale, bluish face.
Lu Yunhe cupped her face in his hands, rubbing it gently.
A total one-eighty from the cold, detached man he used to be.
Su Ci was so hungry that she bit down on his pale fingers—but nearly cracked a tooth.
“Ow… he’s hard as a rock.”
His lean muscle was tough enough as it was—but now that he’d turned, his body felt like literal steel. Completely impenetrable.
A confused look spread across Lu Yunhe’s stiff features. He tilted her chin with his fingers and bent down to examine her pearly white teeth.
“Mmm…”
He hesitantly slipped a finger into her mouth.
“Mmph… guh…”
Chomp… slooow…
Zombies weren’t complex creatures. He wanted to chew on her—so clearly, she must want to chew on him too. Since he’d munched on her for a while, it only made sense to offer her a turn.
Su Ci had no choice but to give his finger a few licks.
Thankfully, she’d wiped his hands with soap earlier, so he didn’t taste bad—like a popsicle scented with hand soap. Cold, hard, and a little minty.
If zombies could express emotion, his face definitely lit up just now.
He liked that feeling!
So warm! So soft! So wet!
Zombies didn’t understand what pleasure was, and they didn’t know what it meant to “like” something. They just knew: if it felt good, do it again.
Again and again. Holding someone close. Chewing. Being chewed.
That was the feeling!
But suddenly, he heard her stomach growl and immediately bent down to listen to it.
Gurgle gurgle…
Was there… a baby zombie in there?
