- Chapter 148 - The Pure-Hearted Zombie King Who Protects Lone Humans (15) "I’ll Do the Dirty Work—for You"
“Wait here for me, sweetheart. I’ll go greet our uninvited guest.”
Lu Yunhe leaned down to lick the cream off Su Ci’s lips, then kissed her a few more times, reluctant to part. Only after that did he crack his knuckles and stride toward the chaos breaking out not far away.
Logically speaking, Yan Shengnan had just recovered from overextending her abilities and should have been no match for a well-fed Yu Yang. But as a female lead blessed by narrative luck, her powers outclassed the average ability user, and soon she gained the upper hand.
That kind of attrition wasn’t sustainable… Yan Shengnan narrowed her eyes and funneled energy into a small, unassuming sprout behind Yu Yang.
The plain green seedling instantly morphed into a waist-high carnivorous plant, baring sharp, snapping jaws that lunged straight for Yu Yang’s thigh.
“Behind you! Watch your back!” Zhi Han shouted.
When the sneak attack failed, Yan Shengnan switched targets, lashing her vines at Zhi Han. Yu Yang rushed to protect her and was flung several meters by a whipping strike.
Their battle, full of energy clashes and chaotic movements, looked confusing to the average onlooker—but to Lu Yunhe, it was nothing more than two rookies squabbling.
Even without his memories of military training, his physical instincts were sharper than ever—his body hardened, nearly invulnerable.
Yan Shengnan tried the same tactic again, but Lu Yunhe simply grasped the end of her vine and gave it a light tug—effortless—and hauled her right in front of him.
“W-What are you doing?! Let go of me!”
He easily tore apart the vines wrapped around her limbs.
Yan Shengnan screamed, her voice raw with pain as she thrashed and wailed.
“Let go! Lu Yunhe, don’t forget who you are! What you’re doing is going to draw public condemnation! You’re not fit to wear that uniform!”
A flicker of confusion passed through Lu Yunhe’s shadowed eyes, but then his fingers tightened coldly around her throat.
“Tell me clearly—what do I have to do to earn humanity’s approval?”
Thinking her words had swayed him, Yan Shengnan doubled down, her voice rising with righteous conviction.
“You swore to protect the people, remember? Not to choke them to death! You’re violating your oath—”
“You’re hoarding food and supplies while others starve! Why are you hiding away here, living in luxury? You should be sharing your resources to save the struggling survivors!”
“You were born to sacrifice yourself for the greater good. It’s not too late to redeem yourself—let go of me, and bring me something clean to eat—”
Lu Yunhe stared at her impassively as she ranted.
“You don’t speak for everyone.”
Even when he was human, he would’ve arrested someone like her for harming fellow survivors.
Under his crushing grip, Yan Shengnan’s face turned a deep purplish red, veins bulging, eyes bulging with agony.
He knew with just a twist, he could snap her neck—just like he’d done to countless zombies before.
So why… why did his head hurt so much?
It felt like a hundred iron needles stabbing into his brain, colliding and exploding all at once, scattering his thoughts into fragments.
A flood of chaotic memories surged in, stabbing at his nerves like broken glass.
“Xiao Liu, let go.”
The soft voice drifted into his ears. Lu Yunhe’s hands released. He buried his head into Su Ci’s neck, breathing in the scent that always calmed him.
Tears slid silently down, soaking her collar.
After a long pause, he whispered hoarsely, “I’m sorry. I broke my promise again.”
He should’ve ended that woman, taken her wood-element core, purified it, and presented it to the girl he loved.
But justice belonged to the law.
Not to him—a zombie who’d lost his humanity.
Su Ci gently stroked his back, soothing him with warmth. “It’s okay. If you can’t be the bad guy, I’ll do it. Let me get my hands dirty.”
Yan Shengnan collapsed to the ground, gasping for air, clutching her bruised throat.
She had thought Su Ci stepped in to save her, but those chilling words sent her scrambling in panic.
How could Su Ci—another woman—say something so cruel in such a gentle tone just to protect Lu Yunhe from the guilt of killing?
Was she really that dependent on a man?
She hadn’t crawled far before the very carnivorous plant she summoned clamped down on her ankle, vines slithering into her bloodstream.
The force that invaded her body was far too powerful. It twisted inside her, threatening to shred her organs into pulp.
“Y-You… stop… this is murder…”
Zhi Han screamed in panic, clutching Yu Yang. “Su Ci’s just defending herself! We all saw it! Right, Lu Instructor?! She tried to kill us just now!”
Lu Yunhe responded with a low grunt. “Mn.”
But it wasn’t the pain that terrified Yan Shengnan the most. It was the sensation of her abilities being ripped from her—like her soul was being flayed alive.
“No! My powers! Su Ci, stop—please!”
With a flick of Su Ci’s fingers, the vine withdrew—dragging out a green crystal core. She raised her hand again, and the orb crumbled into glittering dust.
The shattered fragments blew past Yan Shengnan’s face. She frantically held out her palms to catch them, only to end up with dull gray specks of useless powder.
As the man-eating plant dragged her away, she sobbed and shrieked:
“I won’t let you get away with this!”
“You pathetic love-addled doormat! You’ll all die, just wait and see! Sucking up to men, hating other women—hope you enjoy being their maids for life!”
“I’ll report you all to the police! You ruined me! You’ll all go to jail!”
…
Even after the shouting faded, Lu Yunhe still clung to the girl in his arms, his tall, strong body curled over hers as if he’d found a missing rib.
“Will she die?”
“Maybe. Maybe not.”
Su Ci had only removed Yan Shengnan’s core. It was painful, sure—but not fatal. She didn’t want Lu Yunhe to be burdened by guilt.
If you were being honest, a zombie king paired with a killer sounded about right—but Su Ci didn’t want him to carry that kind of weight.
Her soft fingers threaded through his short, bristly hair, gently massaging his tense scalp like she was petting a cat.
“Do you believe me? That she’s killed people before?”
The original novel described Yan Shengnan like this:
She was never anyone’s sidekick. She was a ruthless, ambitious woman, and even so-called heroes couldn’t help but admire her strength and ferocity.
The novel praised her ruthlessness:
She was the strongest woman in the apocalypse, proving that a woman could carve out her own path. On the road to godhood, sacrifices were necessary.
And the sacrificed included: Yu Qin, smothered in the dorm; Duan Yiyi, hacked to death; students who took shelter in the cafeteria; and anyone at the base who dared disagree with her.
Even with a second chance at life, Yan Shengnan’s hands were never clean.
Lu Yunhe asked no further questions.
“Su Ci, I trust you. Completely and unconditionally.”
