- Chapter 29 - The Mysterious BOSS Who Keeps the New Player Captive (8)
Granted, Rongxue—the little blackened coalball version—no longer had a proper head of hair, lips, or fingers.
After carefully finishing the red-dressed ghost’s manicure, Su Ci reached out to retrieve the poor thing, only to scoop up a puddle of sticky, pitch-black goo.
The little guy had not only turned black on the sly but had melted into liquid out of sheer grievance.
Su Ci had no choice but to coax him with empty promises:
“Once my sweet little Rongxue has a proper humanoid form, I’ll braid your hair too, alright? But no manicures for boy monsters.”
The black coalball bounced up and down with excitement, then wriggled up her wrist, through her sleeve, and popped out from her collar to coil around her neck like a glossy obsidian necklace.
Qin Jin, sipping hot water on the couch, was dumbfounded. Was this goddess really a player? She felt more like the true mistress of the villa than any of the actual monsters.
But she was deeply disappointed—there was no sign of the glutinous rice monster Xu Siwei had described, with its all-white body and beady black eyes.
So now what? What was she supposed to do?
From what the goddess said, this place couldn’t take her in. If not for Su Ci’s kindness, she would’ve been split in two by that axe already.
As for going back to her mission site, “Witch Village Farmstay,” she had already timed out. She was too scared to return and had no idea where Siwei was.
The fire crackled in the hearth, but Qin Jin still felt cold down her spine. Her mind was a chaotic mess, and her head throbbed painfully.
Before long, the residents of the villa gathered for dinner.
A white-haired old lady, the axe-wielding security guard, the red-dressed female ghost, a twin-tailed little girl, Su Ci, and the black goopy thing clinging to her.
Qin Jin sat stiffly among them, too afraid to even pick up her chopsticks.
Then the little girl suddenly chirped:
“Someone’s missing.”
Her round eyes turned toward Qin Jin.
“Guest in the back, could you go call him in? He should be out in the yard fixing the car.”
Why not have the pretty older sister go instead? Because she was pretty. The little girl liked her and didn’t want her to catch a cold.
Qin Jin’s scalp tingled. Her limbs froze.
“O-okay, I’ll go right now.”
There were several off-road vehicles parked in the courtyard. Qin Jin searched back and forth but didn’t see a single person.
“Hello? Anyone there? They said it’s dinnertime!”
Scrraaaape—
One of the cars was shoved aside by something. From underneath crawled out a bloody figure.
Or rather, it could barely be called a person—just shredded chunks of humanity, like meat paste clinging to a mangled skeleton.
Qin Jin nearly fainted on the spot. Her voice trembled:
“M-Mister Mechanic, dinner’s ready. Everyone’s waiting for you…”
The mechanic held a wrench in one hand and spat out a hunk of flesh as he grinned:
“Alrighty, thanks little miss! Did… did I scare you?”
Qin Jin’s face turned ghostly pale.
“N-not at all, I’m just… cold. I’ll go back inside first!”
She bolted like her life depended on it. Right now, only the goddess could heal her traumatized little heart. Please, goddess sister, save me!
Back at the table, she saw Su Ci ladling soup for the coalball and finally let out a sigh of relief.
The dishes on the table were a little… odd. She didn’t dare eat anything rashly, so she just mimicked whatever Su Ci picked up.
Su Ci asked:
“Tastes good?”
Qin Jin nodded furiously. She was starving and never imagined she’d eat such delicious homemade food in a horror instance.
“It’s amazing! Better than anything a restaurant chef could make!”
“Thank you for taking me in. Thank you, everyone. You’re all such kind monsters. I’ll leave tomorrow so I don’t cause any trouble.”
Just as she finished speaking, the white-haired granny let out a strange chuckle.
“Oh dear, if you like it, eat more. No need to rush off, good girl. Wait until the snow stops, and Uncle Mechanic will drive you down.”
Qin Jin: “……”
She glanced desperately at Su Ci. Staying a few more days was fine… but could they not have Mister Mechanic drive her? She was terrified of being reduced to minced people-chunks.
The little girl barely ate, just shoveled down a few bites before rushing up to the second floor.
Su Ci glanced after her. The granny explained:
“That child loves to study. She’s always buried in homework, never goes out to play. Quite the introvert, sigh…”
That night, Su Ci received a task to stay in a room upstairs. Just as she was about to speak, the red-dressed ghost haughtily crossed her arms and pointed the way.
“Far left, the innermost room. Already cleaned for you. Don’t get the wrong idea—I only did it so you wouldn’t mess up my walk-in closet.”
Su Ci smiled gently.
“Thank you, sis. You really have great fashion taste. If you improved your makeup a bit, you’d absolutely stun everyone.”
The red-dressed ghost’s carefully curated persona crumbled.
After Su Ci gave her a bold glam makeup look, she couldn’t believe the sparkling, radiant woman in the mirror was really her.
“Oh my god, are you Nuwa or something? I look incredible—I want to weld this makeup onto my face!”*
[*Nuwa: a goddess in Chinese mythology associated with beauty and creation.]
Su Ci shook her head.
“I’m not Nuwa. It’s because you were always beautiful—and you’ve always had the freedom to pursue beauty.”
Tears streamed down the ghost’s face.
“Stop it, you sap! Why are you getting emotional all of a sudden…”
She’d been a monster so long she’d forgotten her own name, but she still clearly remembered—
Back in school, she’d been bullied for being too pretty, for developing too fast. Teachers twisted the story, blamed her, and called her parents.
Her parents felt ashamed, refused to listen.
“Why do you think they’re only bullying you?”
“Can’t you just avoid them and stay low-key?”
When she started earning her own money, she proudly got her nails done and showed her mom—only to be scolded as indecent.
“Is this something everyone does now? You’ll die if you don’t get your nails done, huh?”
At work, she wore full makeup, summer dresses, and heels—then got sexually harassed by male supervisors.
Behind her back, they sneered: she looked seductive, like she was dressing to lure men. It must be her fault.
After composing herself, the red-dressed ghost—with perfect makeup—went to tidy up a room for Qin Jin.
Qin Jin was overwhelmed:
“Th-thank you, ghost sister!”
The ghost tilted her chin proudly:
“Notice anything different about me?”
Qin Jin had held back earlier, but now she couldn’t stop talking.
“Yes, yes, totally! You’re so beautiful now—I can’t take my eyes off you! It’s like you’re glowing!”
“Really? I thought so too. It’s all thanks to my friend’s magic touch.”
She had never felt more beautiful than she did tonight. Tomorrow, she’d ask Su Ci to do her makeup again.
Of course, she would offer something in return—an equivalent trade.
But even after she removed her makeup that night, she found herself still looking shockingly good—nothing like her past, lifeless self.
So strange. Why?
It had to be her friend’s doing!
In truth, it wasn’t just Su Ci’s hands. She had secretly gifted the ghost an S-tier accessory—the glittering “Feather of the Many-Jewelled Magpie.”
It was useless to Su Ci but a perfect match for the red-dressed ghost. Wherever she went now, she would shine.
In the livestream, viewers sat in stunned silence.
【It’s over. I’m not just in love with her looks—I’m in love with her soul. I’ve officially become a love-brained simp.】
【She’s a guidance-type player. Who—monster or human—wouldn’t fall for her?】
【These monsters are blessed. No fear of being killed, and they even get S-tier loot from her. She’s unreal. I’m crying.】
【What do I do if I feel like even the ghosts have a better life than me? I want to die. Right now.】
That night, as Su Ci climbed into bed holding Rongxue, she noticed he was trembling again—his black shell shimmering with strange, iridescent colors.
“Alright, alright, be good, Rongxue. I’m working on sending them away so we can have our little two-person world together, okay?”
“R-really?”
His blackness lightened just a little. His voice was muffled, still sad. Su Ci was just too kind to the other monsters.
He began to squirm, soft goo slowly wrapping around her. Two little tentacles clung affectionately to her cheeks.
“What do you like, Wife? I can become anything you want. I’ll be prettier than that red-dressed ghost! You’re not allowed to look at her anymore…”
