- Chapter 46 - Some People Always Have the Last Word
“Tingting, congratulations on your double blessings!”
Though the words were filled with well-wishes, Lin Mengting on the other end of the phone still sensed a trace of malice.
Suppressing the slight irritation rising within her, Lin Mengting asked indifferently, “Sister Mei, what blessings are you talking about?”
“Tingting, although humility is a virtue often promoted by our people, excessive humility is akin to arrogance!” Without waiting for Lin Mengting to respond, Qin Mei quickly added, “Firstly, you passed your probation period and will receive a high salary, with prospects of a promotion. Secondly, you participated in this year’s college entrance exam for working adults. Given your grades, I’m sure you’ll easily get an acceptance letter from S City University.” She sneered internally, thinking that even if Lin Mengting obtained several bachelor’s degrees, they wouldn’t be as valuable as her own.
“Two blessings in one, you should treat us!”
“Sister Mei, your information is always so timely,” Lin Mengting said ambiguously, not addressing the invitation to treat, “If you had gone to study journalism back then, we would already have a famous national reporter from S City!”
“Tingting, it’s only been a few months since we last met, and you’ve become so sharp-tongued,” Qin Mei said, suppressing her annoyance and pretending not to catch the implication in Lin Mengting’s words.
“No wonder people say that society is a cruel big dye vat; even the most innocent and naive person will undergo a drastic change after rolling around in it. However, despite this, in a strange city where we know no one, those of us who grew up together with deep bonds shouldn’t let the indifference of the city pull us apart. After all, in a foreign place, if anything happens, it’s only us true friends who care about you that will lend a helping hand within our capabilities. Don’t you think so?”
“Sister Mei, you always make so much sense,” Lin Mengting replied, holding the phone between her head and shoulder while typing rapidly on her keyboard, showcasing her multitasking skills.
There was a moment of silence on the other end.
After a while, just when Lin Mengting thought Qin Mei would tactfully hang up, she heard Qin Mei speak again, “Tingting, are you typing on a computer?”
“Yes.” Lin Mengting answered casually, but to Qin Mei, it was a bombshell!
“I remember you didn’t know how to use a computer before.”
“That’s right!” In her past life, Qin Mei had an “old-fashioned” mindset and despised spending time and effort learning how to use a computer. Even later, when she was forced to learn, she only grasped basic word processing.
Now, Qin Mei was likely still as ignorant about computers as ever! Even with Qin Dong’s encouragement, he couldn’t persuade the stubborn and rigid Qin Mei!
So, Lin Mengting’s tone turned cheerful.
“But later, I spent a few hundred yuan on a computer training class! Didn’t Qin Dong ask me several times about the computer training center, and later he applied to be a teacher there himself! Sister Mei, don’t you remember? Well, that’s understandable. Important people tend to forget things!”
…
Sentence after sentence left Qin Mei speechless, successfully making her face turn red with anger as she glared at the phone with a venomous expression.
“Tingting, I didn’t expect you to become so sharp-tongued!” Qin Mei quickly regained her composure, “Well, it makes sense; you’re in sales, and you should be able to talk a dead man out of his grave. Alright, I know you’re busy, so I won’t keep you. I called to tell you that this weekend, I’m coming to the city and would like to meet up with you.”
Without waiting for Lin Mengting to respond, Qin Mei hung up the phone.
Listening to the “beep beep” of the dial tone, Lin Mengting rolled her eyes. Was it really okay to have such one-sided conversations?!
…
Of course, Lin Mengting had no intention of attending this gathering initiated solely by Qin Mei.
Unfortunately, over the next few days, no matter how many times she called, she couldn’t reach Qin Mei. In desperation, Lin Mengting dialed Qin Dong’s number.
“Oh my God, Tingting, you finally remembered me! I’m… I’m… so happy, so excited, so thrilled! I feel like running downstairs with the phone right now!”
【As expected, when my sister acts, she outshines everyone! Look, didn’t Lin Mengting just call me!】
【They say ‘once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is a pattern,’ and as long as Lin Mengting calls often, how far away is the day she visits me at the training center?!】
【When that day comes, I’ll proudly hold her hand and show her off to my colleagues and boss, who mock me behind my back for being fat and ugly, saying I can’t find a girlfriend!】
【If I can win over someone as aloof as Lin Mengting, what in the world could possibly challenge me?!】
…
Lin Mengting’s mouth twitched, almost unable to believe such narcissistic people existed!
“Qin Dong, could you please tell Sister Mei that I have something this weekend and can’t make it?”
“Huh?!” Qin Dong looked surprised, as if he wasn’t the one who planned this, “I can’t decide for her. You should call her to explain.”
“I’m just asking you to pass the message.” Lin Mengting suppressed a sneer, her expression unchanged. “Since she abruptly set the meeting time and hung up, I’ve been unable to reach her.”
“She’s probably busy lately, which is why she didn’t answer your calls.” Qin Dong smiled proudly, “My sister signed up for the practitioner exam and has been busy studying. I heard that top scorers will be recommended to work at S City People’s Hospital.”
After speaking, Qin Dong seemed to realize what he had said and quickly added, “Tingting, just listen to this. Don’t tell anyone else. If my sister finds out, a beating would be the least of my worries!”
The implied meaning of “look, I’m sharing such important news with you, so you must be special to me” made Lin Mengting inwardly scoff.
“Sister Mei is always brilliant. I’m sure she’ll do great. I have things to do, so I’ll hang up now.”
Whether Qin Dong would pass the message to Qin Mei, and how Qin Mei would react, was none of her concern.
After all, she had fulfilled her duty to inform.
Unfortunately, Lin Mengting soon realized that some people really couldn’t be judged by common sense…
