Song Tan’s Chronicle - Chapter 72
Sun Shouping clearly loved his dogs. When he talked about his beloved pets, his eyes sparkled with affection.
“If you want a guard dog for the mountains, those common pets like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and Labradors won’t do at all.”
“The first two have no obedience, just nerves.”
“The latter two are obedient enough but lack the deterrence and aggression. They’d just invite people to pet them!”
He opened a gate, and immediately, puppies bounded over, creating a fluffy paradise.
Even though Song Tan came to look for adult dogs, she nearly gave in to the temptation.
Who can resist the cuteness of fluffy puppies?
Sun Shouping couldn’t help but smile.
Having sold dogs to many people, he could tell who genuinely loved dogs. Some cared about lineage, some about looks, and others just wanted to show off…
Having invested so much emotion into raising animals, it was easy to get heartbroken.
Sun Shouping had loved dogs since childhood, and only in the past few years had he become more composed.
But seeing someone who genuinely liked dogs still made him happy. He quickly led Song Tan to another area:
“You have puppies at home? A well-trained local dog can be just as smart as any. Let’s not look at the puppies now, just pick what you need.”
Song Tan understood but couldn’t resist joking: “Brother Sun, you’re being so diligent. Is it because adult dogs are more expensive?”
Sun Shouping laughed. “You’ve got it wrong. There’s not much price difference here, and puppies are actually more profitable!”
Raising dogs was different from other animals. Companion pets like cats and dogs were best adopted at the right age. They bonded better and trained more effectively.
Once they got older, they weren’t as cute, making them harder to sell.
Hence, older pets often sold for less.
When they reached adulthood, they were nearly impossible to sell.
Sun Shouping hadn’t started discounting because he raised large dogs, which were still in demand as guard dogs. To maintain their training and combat effectiveness, he ensured high-quality food.
Thus, the price difference between adult and puppy dogs was mostly offset by the cost of food.
And he hadn’t charged extra for training, out of courtesy to Zhang Yanping.
He explained this, worried Song Tan might think adult dogs wouldn’t bond with new owners, and reassured her:
“My adult dogs are well-trained. Here, I’m their master. But once they’re with you, with proper care and not mistreatment, they’ll be loyal and obedient.”
“I’ve only had this dog farm for a couple of years, but I’ve been in the business for a long time. I know the dogs I sell.”
“As for my reputation, you can ask Yanping.”
Song Tan had done her homework and nodded.
“So, any recommendations?”
Sun Shouping grinned. Dealing with knowledgeable customers was pleasant.
“It depends on your preference. For guarding the mountains, German Shepherds, Cane Corsos, Belgian Malinois, and Dobermans are all good. It’s up to your liking.”
“German Shepherds are smarter.”
“Cane Corsos are quieter and confident.”
“Dobermans are bold and fierce.”
“Malinois can run and jump—this fence wouldn’t hold them.”
His descriptions made every breed sound perfect!
Song Tan was torn.
They reached the outermost pasture.
It was a spacious area with segmented fencing, and in the middle, about ten large dogs lounged lazily in the sun.
They looked content, clearly enjoying their life at the dog farm.
Sun Shouping sighed, “Humans have it worse than dogs.”
He clapped his hands.
“Come here.”
Instantly, the dogs perked up, standing and racing toward Sun Shouping, barking energetically!
One dog’s movement triggered the rest, creating an impressive display of energy.
Sun Shouping stood protectively in front of Song Tan, worried she might be scared.
But Song Tan’s eyes shone with excitement, oblivious to his concern.
She noticed the leading Malinois was indeed fast and agile, leaping far ahead of the others.
Next was the Doberman, looking fierce and clumsy, charging ahead as if to bite someone.
Then came several German Shepherds and Cane Corsos.
Unlike the others, they approached cautiously, slowing down as they neared Sun Shouping, then excitedly licking his hands.
Despite their excitement, the dogs avoided Song Tan, clustering around Sun Shouping from the other side.
The nearest German Shepherd wagged its tail carefully, not brushing against Song Tan.
“These dogs are truly well-trained!”
She was impressed.
Sun Shouping was pleased she wasn’t scared. He clapped again, commanding, “Sit!”
In an instant, the dogs retreated and sat obediently, curiously eyeing the new girl beside their master.
Song Tan clutched her chest.
“I only wish I had a bigger mountain and more money…”
She wanted to take them all home!
Sun Shouping laughed heartily:
“You’re quite bold! Look around and see which ones you like.”
“All the dogs here meet your requirements. Just pick the ones you like, and that like you back.”
“My dogs are smart. If they don’t want to go with you, we’ll find another.”
Song Tan was confident.
She smiled knowingly: “Animals have always liked me. I bet if I move my fingers, all your dogs will want to come with me.”
Sun Shouping laughed and stepped back, gesturing to the dogs:
“Behave well, this might be your new owner.”
The dogs focused their attention on Song Tan.
