Chapter 14: Cockroach Armor, Crazy Driving
After “gently” dealing with Hong Shan, Liang Yu headed outside.
After all, such physically exhausting activities should be limited to once a day. Overdoing it could harm the body, especially the kidneys.
The bright sun outside stood in stark contrast to the ruined cityscape. Liang Yu stretched his arms, preparing for the battles ahead.
The journey from the police station in the city center to the eastern shelter wasn’t going to be easy.
Though they had the cockroach armor vehicle, it wasn’t invincible. What if they encountered another A-level zombie?
The last A-level zombie had the ability to climb walls. Who knew what abilities the next one might have?
Liang Yu took a deep breath and headed to the kitchen from the previous day. While everyone else was still asleep, he decided to prepare breakfast.
A guy who can cook? Major bonus points!
By the time Liang Yu finished cooking, the others had woken up. Waking up to a hot meal in the middle of an apocalypse? It was like a dream come true!
Hong Shan, nursing his sore arm from Liang Yu’s earlier “gentle” treatment, sat down, avoiding eye contact with him.
Lai Qingxue noticed and asked, “Hong Shan, what happened to you?”
Hong Shan glanced at Liang Yu, who shot him a menacing look. Hong Shan quickly waved it off, “Nothing, just that the bed wasn’t very comfortable.”
Lai Qingxue nodded, “I thought so too. It was too hard!”
Liang Yu placed a bowl of food in front of her, “Alright, stop complaining. Eat up. We’re heading to the shelter soon. Maybe the conditions there will be better.”
Lai Qingxue took a bite, “Let’s hope so!”
After breakfast, Liang Yu led the group to load up the vehicle. They climbed into the cockroach armor, with Liang Yu in the driver’s seat, Hong Shan in the observation seat, and Lai Qingxue and the others in the back.
This cockroach armor vehicle had no offensive capabilities—just defense. When Liang Yu first got in, he was baffled. How were they supposed to fight without any weapons?
Luckily, Liang Yu had driving skills. If worse came to worst, he could just run over the zombies.
As Liang Yu expertly adjusted the vehicle’s systems, Hong Shan watched in awe. Did Liang Yu really know how to handle all this?
Hong Shan, confused, asked, “Old Liang, be honest with me. Were you in the special forces or something?”
Liang Yu shot him a glare, “Your whole family’s in the special forces!”
Hong Shan pointed at the controls, “Look at how skilled you are with this stuff. You sure you weren’t in the special forces?”
Liang Yu continued adjusting the systems, “I play a lot of games. Modern games are super realistic. I’ve simulated driving this cockroach vehicle countless times!”
“Yeah, right. If games had this, I wouldn’t believe it even if you beat me to death!”
Liang Yu was just making things up. Obviously, he couldn’t let Hong Shan believe that a game could teach someone how to handle real-world military equipment.
Liang Yu pressed the start button, putting on sunglasses and striking a pose like a special forces soldier.
“Believe what you want!”
Then, he slammed the gas pedal to the floor.
Hong Shan, who wasn’t braced, was thrown back into his seat.
Liang Yu drove the cockroach vehicle straight through the police station’s walls, crashing through one after another.
“Hold on tight, everyone! We’re hitting the road!” Liang Yu called out.
Zombies outside began swarming towards them, but Liang Yu didn’t even glance at them. He pulled off a 360-degree drift, sending zombies flying.
Good grief, Liang Yu was driving this cockroach vehicle like a maniac.
At the next intersection, more zombies awaited.
With another drift, Liang Yu left them in the dust, taking a few down along the way.
Hong Shan patted Liang Yu’s shoulder, “Brother Liang, slow down! Slow down!”
Liang Yu pretended not to hear, waving with one hand, “What? Not fast enough? I’ll go faster!”
With a mischievous grin, Liang Yu eyed a button on the dashboard—a turbo boost. Maybe it would make the cockroach vehicle fly.
He pressed the button, and the vehicle’s speed instantly jumped up a notch.
Zombies and wrecked cars alike vanished from sight as they sped past. Liang Yu recognized the area.
Before the zombie outbreak, Liang Yu occasionally came here to eat. The food was cheap, and they had a “big eater” challenge.
The top prize was a high-end gaming laptop. With that laptop, Liang Yu could play all the high-performance games he wanted.
Plus, he could run multiple games at once, making it easier to farm dungeons and level up accounts for others.
Though Liang Yu’s family wasn’t poor, he was a good kid. His sister, Liang Yu, was about to go to college.
On one hand, he had promised to surprise her. On the other, Liang Yu was about to graduate himself and wanted a stable side job before finding full-time work.
But that big eater challenge had always tripped him up at the final stage.
Fifteen bowls of ramen in ten minutes, after clearing the first three rounds.
Round one: twenty large meat skewers in thirty minutes.
Round two: five large bowls of ramen in twenty minutes.
Round three: twenty-five small bowls of ramen in ten minutes.
Even the restaurant owner couldn’t manage it.
Hong Shan spotted the restaurant too. He often came here with Liang Yu, mostly to kill time and occasionally join in the challenge.
Pointing at the restaurant, Hong Shan said, “Old Liang, remember that place?”
“Of course. If the zombie outbreak hadn’t happened, I’d probably be there right now, doing the challenge!”
“Still thinking about that gaming laptop, huh?”
“Obviously! A laptop worth over twenty grand? Who wouldn’t want it?”
“Come on, it’s the apocalypse now. Forget about the laptop and focus on staying alive!”
“Can you stop talking nonsense? If you have nothing to say, go shoot some zombies!”
Liang Yu was getting annoyed. Hong Shan could talk for hours once he got started.
Hong Shan rolled his eyes. Only two of their four roommates were left. Couldn’t he reminisce a little?
Geez, if they lost another one, Liang Yu might not be so dismissive.
Before long, Liang Yu drove the cockroach vehicle to an open area on the eastern side of Donghai City. It was a blank space filled with obstacles.
Just as Liang Yu was about to drive in, a large group of soldiers in military uniforms appeared ahead. They were likely stationed at the shelter.
Liang Yu hit the brakes, and the group got out of the vehicle, walking towards the soldiers.
The man in charge looked at Liang Yu and asked, “Who are you?”
Liang Yu casually replied, “We’re survivors. We heard your broadcast and came here.”
The man nodded and then radioed the shelter.
“Four adults and one child have arrived. Please advise.”
“Thoroughly check them. No infected allowed inside.”
“Understood.”
The man turned to Liang Yu and the others, “I’ve received orders. You can enter, but we need to conduct a check.”
“Of course!”
