Chapter 15: The Origin of the Zombie Virus

After the inspection, Liang Yu and the others were led inside by the man in charge.

The shelter was illuminated by large chandeliers, and around 200 people were inside, with 40 to 50 soldiers stationed there.

It was clear that many people hadn’t survived this disaster. The number of survivors was painfully small.

And even those who had survived might not make it to the end. In the future, they could face problems like resource shortages, internal conflicts, and more.

Liang Yu had thought about all of this. After entering the shelter, Liu Ruyi and her son, Dou Dou, said their goodbyes and left the group.

Liang Yu didn’t say much. After all, he had promised Li Cheng to bring them to the shelter safely.

Watching them leave, Liang Yu, Hong Shan, and Lai Qingxue found a spot and sat down on the cold ground.

Liang Yu, noticing that Lai Qingxue was uncomfortable, laid his jacket on the floor for her. She smiled and said, “Thank you.”

Hong Shan saw this and couldn’t help but think, ‘Liang Yu really is the type to prioritize women over his friends.’

Hong Shan looked at Liang Yu and asked, “Old Liang, now that we’ve delivered them, what’s your plan?”

Leaning against the wall and watching the bustling crowd, Liang Yu replied, “Let’s stay here for a while. We’ll leave for Kyoto in a few days.”

Lai Qingxue immediately said, “I’m coming with you!”

Liang Yu glanced at her beaming face but said nothing.

Hong Shan wasn’t too thrilled. ‘These two are pairing up, and here I am, the single one. Great.’

“Fine, I guess. My parents are safe in a shelter too. It’s probably one of the safest places in the apocalypse, so I’ll rest up before heading out again,” Hong Shan said with a sigh.

Although the shelter might face issues in the future, for now, it was safe.

They could deal with problems as they came. If things went wrong, they’d figure it out together.

Lai Qingxue then asked, “Liang Yu, when do you think the zombies will be wiped out?”

Before Liang Yu could answer, Hong Shan jumped in, “Zombies can’t be completely wiped out. Even if you kill them all, new ones will appear!”

“Why?” Lai Qingxue was confused by Hong Shan’s response.

Liang Yu stood up and explained, “Because the virus hasn’t been eradicated. Even if we kill all the current zombies, as long as people die in the future, the virus will invade their bodies.”

“At that point, new zombies will be born. The only way to truly eliminate zombies is to find the virus that causes the transformation and stop it at the source.”

Hearing Liang Yu’s detailed explanation, Lai Qingxue finally understood. When a charismatic man explains something, it’s hard not to listen.

Hong Shan chimed in, “Old Liang, do you think this virus was created by some country?”

“How could that be!?” Lai Qingxue exclaimed in shock.

Hong Shan replied seriously, “Why not? In movies, it’s always like this—countries engage in biological warfare, leading to the release of one or more viruses, turning people into zombies.”

“That’s just in movies! It can’t happen in real life,” Lai Qingxue said, not buying into Hong Shan’s theory.

Liang Yu remained silent. While Hong Shan’s idea seemed far-fetched, it wasn’t impossible. Throughout human history, wars over resources had led to all sorts of horrors, and biological warfare wasn’t out of the question.

In some zombie movies, companies researching weapons created advanced viral weapons by combining various pathogens—like the Ebola virus from Africa, swine flu, or monkeypox. When these viruses were merged, a powerful new virus was born.

For some reason, the virus leaked, turning the dead into zombies.

Or maybe it was something else. Either way, it had to be a virus that caused the dead to rise as zombies.

After all, the dead couldn’t just turn into zombies on their own, right?

At that moment, Liang Yu pulled out his phone and placed it in front of the two. He clicked play, and a video started.

The video showed a foreign vlogger on an outdoor adventure. Everything seemed normal until the ground in a nearby cemetery began to move, and countless zombies crawled out.

At first, the vlogger thought it was a prank by his friends. He foolishly approached the zombies, only to be bitten the next second!

The video had been recorded during a live stream, and after the stream ended, it was automatically uploaded.

This showed that the disaster wasn’t limited to China—it was global. The zombie outbreak had spread worldwide.

The entire world had fallen, and humanity was facing an unprecedented catastrophe.

Liang Yu turned off the phone and said, “As you can see, while the zombie outbreak was caused by a virus, it’s probably not the biological weapon Hong Shan was talking about.”

“After all, no country would want to infect its own people.”

“Alright, stop overthinking it. Get some rest. Once we’re well-rested, we’ll head out in a few days.”

Hong Shan shrugged, “You’re right. The outbreak has already happened, and there’s no point in worrying about it now. Let’s just get some sleep.”

With that, Hong Shan leaned against the wall and dozed off.

Lai Qingxue moved closer to Liang Yu. He glanced at her and suddenly remembered—he still had a mission to complete!

He needed to teach six people survival skills for the apocalypse. Time to get started!

Liang Yu opened his phone’s browser and used the system’s hacking skills to jailbreak into a restricted internal network.

There, he found a treasure trove of videos on combat and shooting techniques. His plan was to have Lai Qingxue watch these videos to get a basic understanding.

After all, Liang Yu didn’t have the time or resources to train her in real combat. In the apocalypse, training in hand-to-hand combat was fine, but shooting practice was risky.

Any noise could attract hordes of zombies. They could train in the mountains later, but for now, watching videos would have to do.

After setting up the videos, Liang Yu handed the phone to Lai Qingxue. She looked at him, confused, and asked, “What’s this?”

Liang Yu pointed at the videos, “Some basic shooting and combat tutorials. You should learn them.”

“I can’t always be around to protect you. You need to learn how to take care of yourself when I’m not there.”

Hearing this, Lai Qingxue blushed. Was this his way of showing concern for her?

She clenched her fists and said determinedly, “I’ll work hard and make sure I don’t drag you down!”

Liang Yu nodded, and Lai Qingxue started watching the videos. It was like a whole new world had opened up for her.
