Chapter 21: The Zombie Horde Strikes, Holding the Line
After a seamless combo of attacks, Hong Shan watched Liang Yu and felt a sense of familiarity.
‘Isn’t that the Rider Kick from Kamen Rider?’ Hong Shan thought. ‘Except in the show, they use it to fight monsters, and Liang Yu’s using it to kick zombies. Unbelievable!’
Once the fight was over, Liang Yu returned to the group, only to be met with everyone staring at him like he was some kind of alien.
Looking around, Liang Yu said, “Stop staring at me like that. If you work out enough, you can do this too!”
At that moment, Hong Shan walked over and tugged on Liang Yu’s hair.
“Ouch! Hong Shan, what the hell!?” Liang Yu yelped.
Hong Shan held a strand of Liang Yu’s hair in his hand, examining it closely before looking back at Liang Yu. “You’re not balding, so how did you get so strong? You must be an alien!”
Liang Yu couldn’t help but admire Hong Shan’s wild imagination. If he could, he’d bow down and roll on the ground to show his sincerity in how impressed he was.
Hong Shan grabbed Liang Yu by the collar and started shouting, “Tell me! Where did you take the real Liang Yu!?”
“Spit it out! Did you kill him!?”
“Answer me, or else!”
“Are you here to invade Earth!?”
“Tell me, or I’ll execute you right here!”
Hong Shan’s barrage of questions nearly made Liang Yu pass out. Seeing that Hong Shan was about to get physical, Liang Yu kicked him in the butt.
“Enough, you idiot! If you say one more word, I’ll throw you into the zombie horde to shut you up!” Liang Yu said, clearly annoyed.
Hong Shan tumbled to the ground, earning laughter from the group.
Lai Qingxue walked up to Liang Yu and asked, “Liang Yu, how did you get so strong?”
Liang Yu flexed his biceps and said, “Eat more spinach, eat more meat, and work out regularly. You can do it too!”
Lai Qingxue giggled at his humor, her eyes filled with affection as she looked at him.
Just then, Liang Yu felt a strange vibration in the ground, like standing on an earthquake fault line.
He quickly activated his detector and scanned the surroundings. To the west, a massive horde of zombies was approaching, accompanied by strong winds. Liang Yu immediately understood—this was a zombie horde!
Turning to Dongfang Ke, Liang Yu said, “Call Zhang and tell him to pull all the soldiers back inside the shelter!”
Dongfang Ke, confused, asked, “What’s going on?”
“Didn’t you feel the tremors?” Liang Yu replied.
Dongfang Ke nodded.
“Those tremors are caused by a zombie horde. And judging by the intensity, this isn’t a small one. It’s dangerous to stay outside!”
As soon as Liang Yu finished explaining, the wind picked up, and Dongfang Ke could feel the ominous change in the air. She quickly ordered her team to retreat while contacting the shelter.
After explaining the situation, Zhang Jian immediately ordered all patrolling and stationed soldiers to retreat inside the shelter, leaving only two guards at the gate to let Dongfang Ke’s team back in.
Outside, Liang Yu and the others reached the hidden vehicle. When they opened the back, they found three survivors—two women and a child, all vulnerable in the apocalypse.
Dongfang Ke didn’t say anything, simply nodding for the soldiers to get in the vehicle.
Seeing this, the two women clasped their hands together and repeatedly bowed to Dongfang Ke, thanking her profusely.
Dongfang Ke remained silent. She wasn’t good with words, and situations like this only made her social anxiety worse.
Once everyone was in the vehicle, Dongfang Ke was about to get in as well, but Liang Yu grabbed her arm and motioned for her to look westward.
Following his gaze, Dongfang Ke saw massive black clouds rolling in. ‘The old saying was right—’Black clouds pressing down on the city, ready to destroy it.”
Beneath the clouds, tornadoes were forming, and within them, zombies were surging, clawing and snarling.
Dongfang Ke, unable to watch any longer, patted Liang Yu’s shoulder. “Enough staring. They’ll be here soon. Let’s go!”
With that, Liang Yu rubbed his arm and got into the driver’s seat. As usual, he was the one driving.
“Out of the way, everyone! Veteran driver coming through!” Liang Yu shouted as he sped off, not bothering to touch the brakes.
Before long, they arrived at the shelter’s entrance. After a brief exchange with the guards, they were let inside.
Once back in the shelter, the two women and the child went their separate ways. Liang Yu wasted no time and immediately went to find Zhang Jian.
Bursting into Zhang Jian’s office, Liang Yu rushed over and said, “Zhang, we need to set up defenses right now!”
Zhang Jian calmly placed a cup of water in front of Liang Yu. “Take a breath, brother. Drink some water and explain.”
Liang Yu downed the water in one gulp and then began explaining the approaching zombie horde and the need for defenses. Hearing this, Zhang Jian didn’t hesitate and immediately ordered Dongfang Ke to lead the soldiers in fortifying the entrance.
Liang Yu and Zhang Jian joined in as well. On the way to the armory, Liang Yu grabbed a night-vision scope.
Even though the entrance was still well-lit, there was no guarantee it would stay that way. As a sniper, he needed to see clearly, no matter what.
The reason for setting up defenses was simple. The zombie horde was massive, and the tornadoes only made things worse. While the back of the shelter was fortified, the front was much weaker.
A single missile could blow the front gate to pieces, let alone the powerful winds from the tornadoes. The gate would be ripped off in no time.
Once the gate was down, zombies would pour in through the tunnel, and the shelter would be overrun. While Liang Yu could protect himself, there were too many people inside to save everyone.
He couldn’t possibly protect every single person, and once the zombies got in, it would be a domino effect—one infected person would lead to ten, then a hundred, and soon the entire shelter would become a zombie nest.
If that happened, Liang Yu could escape, but what about Hong Shan? And what about Lai Qingxue?
To prevent this disaster, it was crucial to block the horde from entering. Once the horde passed, they could clean up the aftermath and repair the defenses. It would be much safer that way.
Before long, the outer gate of the shelter began to twist and buckle. Within seconds, the iron door was ripped off, and zombies started pouring in, one after another, quickly getting back on their feet.
Just as Liang Yu had predicted, the tornado had destroyed the gate, and the zombies were flooding in.
Liang Yu smiled slightly as he lay on top of a small truck, watching the zombies rise. He pulled the trigger, taking one down instantly.
With Liang Yu’s first shot, Zhang Jian and the others opened fire as well. One by one, the zombies fell, but the entrance continued to widen, and more zombies flooded in. Fortunately, the defenses had been set up in time.
The zombies didn’t make it inside; they all fell outside the shelter.
