Chapter 27: Desperate Escape, Deadly Pursuit
Hearing Wen Xing Chi’s words, Liang Yu was speechless. ‘I’ve explained it so clearly, yet he still wants to fight head-on?’
‘I really don’t get it. Why are young people so hot-headed these days?’
But now wasn’t the time to dwell on that.
The priority was to figure out how to escape. Survival was the most important thing; everything else could wait.
However, with nine people running together, they were too obvious a target. So, Liang Yu decided to split the group temporarily.
“Tie Zhu, Da Qiang, Yang Bo, and Heng Zhi, you four head that way. The rest of you, follow me.”
After giving his instructions, Liang Yu turned and ran in the opposite direction.
Zhang Tie Zhu and his group quickly ran in the direction Liang Yu had pointed, picking up speed to avoid the pursuing zombie.
The S-class zombie, following the scent, arrived at the spot where they had split up. After glancing in both directions, it instinctively chose to chase the larger group.
Unfortunately, that meant it was now chasing Liang Yu and his team.
Liang Yu, bringing up the rear, turned to see the S-class zombie closing in on them.
As the instructor, Liang Yu didn’t want any of his team members to get hurt. Gritting his teeth, he made a decision.
He turned around.
Using a half-buried car as a stepping stone, Liang Yu climbed on top and aimed his gun at the approaching S-class zombie, pulling the trigger without hesitation.
Bullets rained down on the zombie, but they didn’t cause any significant damage.
In no time, the zombie was right in front of Liang Yu. Smiling slightly, Liang Yu swung his AK-47 at the zombie.
With a loud ‘crack’, the AK shattered on impact.
The S-class zombie roared at Liang Yu, its foul breath filling the air. The team members ahead turned to see their instructor fighting the zombie.
It was clear that Liang Yu was using his life to buy them more time to escape. Wen Xing Chi, overcome with emotion, raised his gun to shoot.
But before he could fire, Guang Le An grabbed his arm and pushed the gun down. Wen Xing Chi shouted, “What are you doing!?”
“You’ll just waste the instructor’s sacrifice. If you want revenge, survive first!” Guang Le An said calmly.
Hearing this, Wen Xing Chi reluctantly lowered his gun, tears welling up in his eyes as he took one last look at Liang Yu before continuing to run with the others.
Back at the fight, the zombie’s foul breath made Liang Yu want to vomit.
He punched the zombie in the ribs, but the zombie retaliated with a swing of its axe.
Just as the axe came down, Liang Yu sped up, disappearing from the spot and reappearing on top of the fallen axe. Using it as a platform, he leaped toward the zombie’s face.
In just a breath’s time, he was on top of the zombie’s head, delivering a powerful kick that sent the massive creature crashing to the ground, raising a cloud of dust.
Liang Yu followed up with a backflip and a forceful knee drop aimed at the zombie’s head.
But the S-class zombie’s defense was too strong. Despite the heavy attack, it was unharmed. It spun its axe horizontally, swinging it at Liang Yu.
Liang Yu flipped out of the way and, seeing that the zombie was still struggling to get up, decided not to press the attack. He turned and ran in the direction of Wen Xing Chi and the others.
The S-class zombie slowly got up, shaking its head. Its eyes turned red as it entered a berserk state, continuing its pursuit of Liang Yu.
Liang Yu, running at full speed, contacted Wen Xing Chi and the others via radio.
“First squad, respond. First squad, respond…”
Wen Xing Chi quickly heard the voice over the radio and responded, “This is First Squad. Instructor, is that you?”
“It’s me. Where are you now?”
“Instructor, I thought you were dead! I didn’t think you’d survive!” Guang Le An’s voice came through the radio.
“What!? You want me dead?” Liang Yu replied, annoyed.
“No, of course not!”
“Enough with the nonsense. Just tell me where you are!” Liang Yu said impatiently.
‘How can they be chatting over the radio at a time like this?’ he thought.
“We’re at Xingke Café. There’s a big sign with a human head outside,” Wen Xing Chi replied, snatching the radio from Guang Le An.
Having the location, Liang Yu began searching for Xingke Café.
Soon, he spotted the large human head sign in a corner that hadn’t been completely destroyed.
Without hesitation, Liang Yu rushed inside, taking advantage of the fact that the S-class zombie hadn’t caught up yet.
As soon as he entered, four gun barrels were pointed at his head, leaving him momentarily stunned.
“I’m your instructor! What are you doing!?”
Hearing Liang Yu’s voice, the four recruits stepped out of the shadows—it was Wen Xing Chi and the others who had fled earlier.
“Instructor, it’s so good to see you again!” Wen Xing Chi said, clearly wanting to give Liang Yu a big hug but settling for an excited greeting instead.
“Alright, enough of that. We need to hide quickly. The mutated zombie will be here any minute!” Liang Yu hurriedly led them back into the shadows.
Sure enough, it wasn’t long before the S-class zombie arrived, stopping at the spot where Liang Yu had paused earlier.
Its eyes turned white as it scanned the area, sniffing the air for any trace of its prey.
When it turned toward Xingke Café, the group pressed themselves against the wall, holding their breath and staying as still as possible.
But what they hadn’t anticipated was that this S-class zombie tracked its prey by scent. Liang Yu’s aura of death was strong, and the zombie immediately picked up on it.
With a roar, the zombie hurled its axe at the café’s entrance, smashing it to pieces.
Fortunately, the group had been standing far enough back. Seeing the axe fly in, Liang Yu didn’t hesitate and ordered, “Run!”
The group bolted out of the café, but the S-class zombie leaped to the entrance, grabbing its axe and swinging it at them.
Luckily, the recruits were quick on their feet and managed to avoid being hit.
Liang Yu was baffled. ‘How did the zombie find us? We didn’t make a sound inside.’
Using the skills granted by the system, Liang Yu quickly deduced the reason—it was tracking them by scent.
Like a bloodhound, the S-class zombie was using its sense of smell to follow them.
Realizing this, Liang Yu turned around, drew his handgun, and aimed at the zombie’s nose.
Even though he wasn’t using the KM80 sniper rifle, his aim was still perfect. All five shots hit the zombie’s nose.
While the zombie’s external defenses were tough, Liang Yu had aimed directly at its nostrils. All five bullets penetrated.
Green blood gushed from the zombie’s nose, and it immediately stopped its pursuit, collapsing to the ground and clutching its face in pain.
Seeing this, Liang Yu was overjoyed. His guess had been correct.
With the S-class zombie incapacitated, Liang Yu and the others didn’t stick around to finish it off. They chose to keep running. Even though the zombie could no longer track them, its combat strength and defense were still formidable.
Without a perfect plan, fighting it head-on was out of the question. So, Liang Yu decided to avoid it for now.
