The Command to Pamper the Husband - Chapter 147
Song Jin’s father had not arrived in the capital as promised, leaving her with only the food-loving Wan Xi at her side. She had no idea where to find her father. Although she had expected her father to arrange for a secret guard to protect her, no one had appeared despite her numerous attempts to summon them.
With no one else to rely on, she turned to Lu Zhan. Every time she asked, he claimed not to know. But this time, Lu Zhan spoke with such certainty that it was clear he knew something.
Song Jin stared intently at Lu Zhan. “You’d better tell me the truth. If you anger me, it won’t benefit anyone. I’m not afraid to die. If you think you can scare me, you’ve got another thing coming!”
Lu Zhan’s eyes widened. “Miss Song, you misunderstand. I truly don’t know why your father hasn’t come to the capital. I’m worried as well, especially with our prince in this condition. We rely on your father for guidance!”
Song Jin scoffed. “Nonsense! If you don’t tell me the truth, that’s fine. The Crown Prince gave me three days. If I don’t get that painting for him, he’ll expose my impersonation of Shen Yue to the Emperor. We’ll all be in trouble then.”
Lu Zhan looked at Song Jin, realizing she wasn’t bluffing. “Why have you suddenly stopped trusting me?” he asked, bewildered.
Song Jin raised an eyebrow. “Trust? You don’t trust me, so why should I trust you? If you’re going to use me and risk my life in the palace, I’d rather stay put and do nothing.”
Lu Zhan was stunned, his mouth hanging open. How did things change so quickly? Before going to the palace, everything seemed fine. “Miss Song, you returned from the palace safely.”
Song Jin shot him a glare and turned to go inside. She pulled the blanket over herself, lying down with her back to the room. Feeling a wave of homesickness, she thought of her parents in her original world. Why did she have to transmigrate? Life as a successor in a socialist society was much better than being tormented by an Emperor here.
Feeling miserable, Song Jin’s mind suddenly sparked with an idea. She sat up abruptly. Something wasn’t right! Her transmigration didn’t seem straightforward. She didn’t know if the original Shen Yue could control weapons with her mind, but she had never seen any memory of it. Her father didn’t know about it either.
But she could! As a successor in her original world, she had that ability. Yet, strangely, so did the descendants of the previous Empress. Shen Yue wasn’t the previous Empress’s child, right? Logically, shouldn’t Shen Yue have this ability instead of her?
Was this the reason for her transmigration? Could this be the true will of heaven?
Thinking this, Song Jin asked, “Do you have a portrait of the previous Empress?”
The woman in her dreams wasn’t clear, and the scenes were too peculiar for her to remember the faces well. Her strongest memory was of the Emperor. She had little recollection of the previous Emperor and Empress. Lu Zhan shook his head. “No.”
Song Jin rolled her eyes and lay back down. Lu Zhan hesitated, then said, “Miss Song, it was my fault for not explaining things before sending you to the palace. But your father isn’t in danger. He didn’t come to the capital because of an issue with the wild man he brought back.”
Lying with her back to him, Song Jin recalled the wild man from that day. The man had knelt to her, hidden behind her, and protected her—it was all too strange. It could only mean that the wild man knew her. What a mess!
“What do you know about my father and the wild man?” she asked.
Lu Zhan explained, “I don’t know much, only that the wild man fell seriously ill. He needed to soak in a well for three days and nights, specifically on the night of the full moon, to survive. That’s why your father was delayed.”
Song Jin was taken aback. Was this historical fiction or a fantasy novel now? Maybe she needed to borrow some novels from the Crown Prince. After all, she hadn’t watched many fantasy dramas. She rolled her eyes. “Why does my father care so much about the wild man?”
“I don’t know. Our prince intended to investigate further once your father arrived with the wild man. But then this happened,” Lu Zhan sighed, lamenting the prince’s coma.
Song Jin couldn’t tell if Lu Zhan was lying. She hated feeling outsmarted but had no choice. “I’m hungry. Go make me something to eat.”
Lu Zhan perked up. “What would you like, Miss Song?”
“Nothing fancy, just the lamb soup noodles from Yuzhou,” she replied.
Lu Zhan’s mouth twitched. Simple? Those were anything but simple. The person who made them was still unconscious. Reluctantly, he turned to leave. As he did, he almost collided with the elderly physician coming in.
The old man slapped Lu Zhan’s chest. “Watch where you’re going!”
Lu Zhan apologized profusely. “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you coming!”
Realizing the old man’s presence meant he didn’t have to cook, Lu Zhan quickly escorted him inside and sent a guard to order food from a restaurant.
Knowing the old man’s medical skills, Song Jin greeted him respectfully. “What brings you here?”
The old man smiled. “I came to check on the prince.”
As he spoke, Lu Zhan triggered a mechanism, causing the bed to flip, revealing a hidden room. Song Jin gasped and rushed in. “Wan Xi! Wan Xi, are you okay?”
Wan Xi was tied to a chair, her hands and feet bound but her mouth free. A plate of chicken legs sat in front of her. Song Jin almost believed Wan Xi had moved the plate herself, as no one would bind her and then thoughtfully place chicken legs within her reach.
Wan Xi, her acupoints struck mute, could eat but not speak. Tears streamed down her face as Song Jin approached. Song Jin, on the verge of tears herself, turned to the old man. “Please, help her. She can’t speak!”
Before Song Jin could finish, she noticed the old man and Lu Zhan standing pale-faced by Shen Yue’s bed.
