The Command to Pamper the Husband - Chapter 148
Shen Yue lay there with a pale face, his hands crossed on the quilt, and a letter placed on the back of his hand. The sight of the letter made Song Jin’s heart inexplicably tighten.
Dragging Wan Xi with her, she hurried forward. Wan Xi, unable to speak, was waving her hands frantically, trying to express something. The elderly physician turned, looked at Wan Xi, and quickly tapped a couple of acupoints on her body.
Wan Xi, who had been making incomprehensible sounds, finally managed to speak. “As soon as you and Lu Zhan left, a man came in. He tied me up but gave me chicken legs. I don’t know what he wanted. Miss, it was terrifying. Let’s go back to Yuzhou!”
Wan Xi was crying so hard she could hardly breathe, tears and snot streaming down her face. She was so scared she even blew a snot bubble while speaking.
Song Jin patted Wan Xi’s back. “It’s okay now. It’s okay.”
Lu Zhan had already taken the letter from Shen Yue’s hand. The elderly physician was examining Shen Yue’s pulse, his face growing darker by the second.
“How is he?” Song Jin and Lu Zhan asked simultaneously.
The elderly physician shook his head. “He’s been poisoned. This poison is rare, called Cold poison.”
Song Jin’s mind raced, and she recalled that the original Shen Yue did know of this poison. “It only grows on the cliffs of Tianshan?”
The physician looked at Song Jin in surprise. “You know about it?”
Song Jin felt awkward. Should she know? Unsure of how to respond, she simply nodded and said, “My family was strict about education. I read a lot.”
She knew about Cold poison because the original Shen Yue had learned about it thoroughly under her father’s guidance. The poison was complex and difficult to understand, while the antidote was as simple as eating—it had no cure. The only way to detoxify it was for the person who administered the poison to willingly place three drops of their blood on the victim’s forehead.
This added a fantastical element to an otherwise historical setting. Song Jin was exasperated.
Clearing her thoughts, she said, “The most important thing now is to find the person who poisoned him.”
The physician gave her a deep, unreadable look. “What does the letter say?” Song Jin asked Lu Zhan.
While Song Jin and the physician had been talking, Lu Zhan had already read the letter. He handed it to her. The letter had a few bold words: “Three-day deadline. Don’t forget.”
Song Jin was furious. “It’s that bastard Crown Prince!”
The elderly physician looked at Song Jin with surprise again. Lu Zhan, meanwhile, clenched his fists. “Is the antidote easy to obtain?” he asked.
The physician sighed and looked at Shen Yue. “As long as we find the poisoner, it’s easy. If we can’t, it’s impossible.”
Lu Zhan’s hands trembled. Wan Xi, looking around nervously, said, “I remember what the man who tied me up looked like. Do you want me to draw him?”
Lu Zhan was delighted. “You can draw?”
Wan Xi rolled her eyes. “Would I have said it if I couldn’t?”
Ignoring Wan Xi’s attitude, Lu Zhan quickly prepared paper and ink. In no time, a vivid face appeared on the paper.
Holding the drawing, Lu Zhan said, “We can’t expect the Crown Prince to hand over the antidote willingly, but I’ll see what I can do.”
As he turned to leave, Song Jin stopped him. “It’s useless. Don’t waste your time.”
Lu Zhan paused. “How do you know it’s useless? We haven’t tried yet. Are we just going to watch the prince lie here? Our…”
The elderly physician coughed, interrupting Lu Zhan. Realizing his mistake, Lu Zhan quickly closed his mouth, his eyes avoiding Song Jin’s gaze.
Raising an eyebrow, Song Jin said, “Given what’s in that letter, we both know the Crown Prince is behind this. If he sent someone to poison Shen Yue, do you think he’ll be easy to find? Even if you do find him, do you think he’ll willingly drip three drops of blood on Shen Yue’s forehead?”
Lu Zhan didn’t know the specifics of the antidote, but he wasn’t stupid. He quickly understood Song Jin’s point and looked at the physician, who nodded in confirmation.
“So, what’s the three-day deadline about?” the physician asked Lu Zhan.
Taking a deep breath, Lu Zhan explained the agreement between Song Jin and the Crown Prince. The physician frowned at Song Jin. “So, our prince is in this state because of you?”
His words ignited Song Jin’s anger. “Nonsense!”
She no longer felt any respect for the physician. Dragging Wan Xi with her, she stomped out. “You’d better figure out how to talk to me properly!”
With that, she stormed off. Wan Xi followed closely, also giving Lu Zhan a fierce glare. “Ungrateful scoundrel! Hmph!”
Lu Zhan felt a sharp pang in his heart. He instinctively reached out to stop Wan Xi but couldn’t lift his hand, as if a weight held him down.
With Song Jin and Wan Xi gone, only Lu Zhan and the physician remained. The physician, usually revered for his skills, had never been treated so rudely. His face was pale with anger, his beard trembling. “How dare she…”
Lu Zhan said, “We need her help now. Miss Song may seem easygoing, but she’s not one to be trifled with.”
The physician’s face was dark with anger. “Not one to be trifled with? In my hands, no one has ever dared to be disobedient.”
Lu Zhan felt a strange sense of déjà vu. “In your hands… has she been under your care before?”
He looked at the physician curiously.
