Chapter 14: You’re actually speaking up for her
After earning the money, Jiang Zhixu went to the market to buy a bunch of vegetables, meat, pig trotters, and duck. Then, she rode her scooter slowly back home.
At this time, Qin Mei usually came out to throw away the trash.
Just as she was about to go upstairs, she heard a distant “Mom.” Turning around, she saw Jiang Zhixu.
“Mom, I…” Qin Mei stared at Jiang Zhixu, who was riding an electric scooter with a bunch of groceries, and almost lost her train of thought.
Jiang Zhixu got off the scooter. “Mom, I earned some money today and bought this scooter. It’ll be more convenient for you to go to the market.”
“I also bought vegetables and meat. We’re having a delicious dinner tonight. I want to make braised pig trotters,” Jiang Zhixu said, locking the scooter and putting her arm around Qin Mei’s, walking and talking without giving her a chance to think otherwise or say that she shouldn’t spend so much money.
By the time they got upstairs and back home, Qin Mei hadn’t had a chance to say anything.
While washing the vegetables, Qin Mei couldn’t shake off the feeling that something wasn’t right. She put down the vegetables and went to Jiang Zhixu’s room.
“Zhizhi, Zhizhi?” Jiang Zhixu opened the door, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Qin Mei. “Mom, what’s wrong?”
“Do you need any help?” Qin Mei asked.
“Wait a minute, Mom. I’ll change clothes and come help,” Jiang Zhixu replied.
“Not at all,” Qin Mei grabbed Jiang Zhixu’s wrist. “Tell me honestly, Mom, where did the money for the scooter come from?”
She wasn’t convinced that Jiang Zhixu had so much money on her, especially since she had given her 1 million yuan when she got home.
“You didn’t do anything you shouldn’t have, did you?”
“No, no,” Jiang Zhixu replied with a smile. “I opened a flower shop with a friend earlier, and although I haven’t been there recently, I’m a partner. So, she gave me half of the shop’s profits.”
She went inside and brought out the money. “It’s 50,000 yuan in total. I used some of it, and the rest is for Mom to keep.”
Qin Mei believed Jiang Zhixu’s sincere explanation and didn’t think she was lying.
She was worried that Jiang Zhixu might be feeling burdened because of Jiang Shengnan and Jiang Zhilei’s illnesses.
“The money, Mom doesn’t need it. You keep it,” Qin Mei said.
“As long as you haven’t done anything wrong, Mom is relieved,” Qin Mei said, putting the money back into Jiang Zhixu’s hands and touching her face.
“You’ll need money in the future. Use it to buy clothes, skincare products, or something. My Zhizhi should dress up nicely,” Qin Mei said, smiling.
Her daughter was back, and she should be a beautiful little princess again.
“Mom, you keep it. I’ll just keep 1,000 yuan,” Jiang Zhixu said, pushing the money back into Qin Mei’s hands.
“I’ll go to the flower shop tomorrow, and I won’t be short of money anymore,” Jiang Zhixu added.
“My room needs new bed sheets and a quilt cover. Mom, can you help me pick some out?” Jiang Zhi Xu asked.
“It’s almost winter, and I want a down jacket. Mom, can you help me pick one out? I’m not good at haggling, and what if I get ripped off?” Jiang Zhixu asked, clinging to Qin Mei and pouting.
Qin Mei couldn’t resist Jiang Zhixu’s charm and pinched her cheek. “Alright, Mom will help you pick out a nice one.”
“Thanks, Mom. You’re the best,” Jiang Zhixu said, smiling mischievously as she leaned against Qin Mei’s face.
Suddenly, she stopped and looked thoughtful. “Mom, have you ever been told that you resemble a famous actress?”
Qin Mei’s smile faltered for a moment, and she avoided eye contact. “What actress? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I don’t remember either. I think I saw her in a TV drama when I was little,” Jiang Zhixu said, furrowing her brow as she tried to recall who it was.
When Jiang Zhixu continued to think about it, Qin Mei interrupted her. “People do look alike, don’t they? There are plenty of people online who aren’t twins but look like they could be.”
“It’s just a coincidence. I’m just a housewife, I don’t act,” Qin Mei said.
“That makes sense,” Jiang Zhixu said, nodding and then pushing the thoughts aside. “Mom, I’m craving pig trotters now.”
“Okay, okay. I’ll go cook them,” Qin Mei replied, affectionately patting Jiang Zhixu’s hand as she headed to the kitchen.
In a place where no one could see her, Qin Mei’s expression turned tense, as if she was hiding a secret that she couldn’t reveal.
In the bedroom, Jiang Zhixu organized the ghosts she had encountered and began to draw talismans.
688 sat beside her, holding a strawberry and munching on it. [Host, do you want to draw a prize?]
“Are there any new prizes?” Jiang Zhixu asked.
688 opened the wheel. [Uh… there’s a new self-defense shield and an invisibility cloak.]
Invisibility cloak?
Jiang Zhixu thought for a moment. “Does the invisibility cloak make you invisible to both humans and ghosts?”
[Yes,] 688 replied.
“Then let’s draw,” Jiang Zhixu said. An invisibility cloak would be perfect for doing bad things.
Hehehe… Jiang Zhixu’s smile made the panda nervous.
The wheel started spinning and finally stopped on the compass.
Click. The dream of using the invisibility cloak for nefarious purposes was shattered.
[Host, don’t worry. The compass can help you locate ghosts. Do you want to draw again?] 688 asked.
Jiang Zhixu held the compass, a small wooden compass with a moving needle.
It looked useful.
“No, I’ll save my points for future upgrades,” Jiang Zhixu said.
The items in the system mall required points to purchase, so she needed to save some.
[Alright,] 688 said, putting away the wheel and continuing to watch Jiang Zhixu draw talismans from the table.
When Jiang Zhixu encountered something she didn’t understand, 688 would explain it to her.
The next morning, Jiang Zhixu got dressed and headed out to work.
She had told Qin Mei, Jiang Shengnan, and the others last night that she would be working at the flower shop, earning 3,000 yuan per month with bonuses, and it was a job that was not tiring with meals and accommodations provided.
As she stepped out of the house and threw away the trash, she saw someone she didn’t want to see.
Zhou Chenhao stood out in a black tailored suit, looking out of place on the rundown street.
Jiang Zhixu ignored him and walked quickly towards the direction of the taxi stand to go to work.
“Zhizhi,” Zhou Chenhao caught up to her and grabbed her wrist. “Can we talk?”
Jiang Zhixu turned around, looking at Zhou Chenhao’s worried expression, and sneered. “It seems like there’s nothing left to say between us, Mr. Zhou. Please don’t appear in places like this. I don’t want others to misunderstand.”
She shook off his hand and walked quickly towards the taxi stand.
Just as Zhou Chenhao was about to catch up, a taxi arrived. To her surprise, Zhou Chenhao followed her in his car and arrived at the flower shop.
And, coincidentally, Bai Liuli was there too.
“Jiang Zhixu? Again?” Bai Liuli’s beautiful face turned venomous as she saw Jiang Zhixu.
Jiang Zhixu felt annoyed too. Why did she keep running into her?
It was so frustrating.
“I’m talking to you, Jiang Zhixu!” Bai Liuli shouted angrily.
This person dared to ignore her?!
Jiang Zhixu’s annoyance turned into irritation. “Do I have to respond every time you talk to me?”
“You!” Bai Liuli’s face twisted with anger.
“What do you mean ‘you’? Just say what you want to say. Are you a mute or something? Can’t you even speak clearly?” Jiang Zhixu’s disdainful gaze completely enraged Bai Liuli.
She raised her hand to slap Jiang Zhixu, but someone grabbed her wrist.
“Who…” Bai Liuli’s voice was choked off when she saw who it was.
“Little uncle…” Zhou Chenhao’s face was filled with displeasure as he shook off Bai Liuli’s arm.
“You were about to hit someone?”
“No, it’s just that she shouted at me first,” Bai Liuli quickly explained, but then she stopped, feeling that something was off.
“Little uncle, you’re actually speaking up for her?” Bai Liuli’s expression changed.
“She’s not even my equal. I’m your fiancée!”
