After all the teasing, Ye Xinxin opened up Shen Lang’s Moments. It was one of those “slept in until dawn” friend circles. Shen Lang hadn’t set his posts to disappear after three days—any friend could pop in and out at will.
[November 24: Master rank achieved, 21 kills—it’s all in the details. Being a champion isn’t just luck!]
[November 28: Scored 1000 points on both servers with my Shovel character—feeling proud!]
[December 21: New Year’s almost here—what a year. Aiming to earn enough for a down payment!]
[December 23: My life’s like walking on thin ice—will I ever make it to the other side?]
Even if a guy’s socially awkward, staying cooped up at home all day is no big deal—and not having a girlfriend is fine too. But with all that free time, if his gaming skills weren’t up to par, he’d really need to hit the reset button. Shen Lang, however, is a total beast when it comes to gaming. He regularly goes toe-to-toe with pro players and famous streamers. Besides his day job writing code, he spends most of his time immersed in the gaming world. He once thought about becoming a game streamer, but thanks to his social anxiety and tongue-tied nature, he eventually ditched that idea. So his Moments are almost entirely about gaming or motivational self-improvement posts. Ye Xinxin scrolled through it all and couldn’t find any hint of that “available” vibe.
“Hmm, guess not.”
Ye Xinxin handed the phone back to Su Lexuan and teased,
“Weren’t you the one who said you liked that refined scumbag type? How come you’re into this gaming homebody guy now?”
Su Lexuan replied, a bit embarrassed,
“Oh, I already told you—it’s just a regular friend. I don’t even know what he does.”
Then she added curiously,
“By just looking at his Moments, can you tell he’s not a scumbag?”
Ye Xinxin laughed,
“First off, his posts aren’t hidden after three days—that shows he’s pretty straightforward. And come on, have you ever seen a scumbag whose entire feed is all about gaming? If that were the case, then every guy who’s been helping me level up would be a Casanova!”
She paused before adding,
“But I gotta admit, this guy’s gaming skills are pretty impressive. If you’re not going to date him, remember to pass his contact info to me—I want my smurf account to climb up to Master too!”
Su Lexuan pouted proudly,
“We’ve only just met—who’s gonna date him? I don’t even know what his deal is.”
She then snuggled into her bed, her clear eyes lingering on Shen Lang’s Moments as a slight smile played on her lips,
“As long as he’s not a scumbag…”
———
Having just moved into his new place—with nothing but a few basic supplies delivered last night—Shen Lang’s new home was pretty bare. Early the next morning, he woke up bright and early, hopped on his little electric scooter, and rode to the nearby supermarket for groceries. By around 9, he was back in the neighborhood. His complex was more convenient than most, even featuring a dedicated charging station for electric vehicles so he didn’t have to haul a cable down from upstairs.
Just then, a familiar female voice called out,
“Shen Lang?”
Shen Lang had just finished charging his scooter when he heard the voice behind him—it was his landlady, Xia Shuyi. She was holding the hand of a little girl with a ponytail—the same adorable kid from yesterday’s photo.
The weather was nice, and Xia Shuyi looked stunning in a black chiffon jumpsuit. Her jet-black hair was swept up high, and at the neckline of her slender, fair neck, a generous patch of porcelain skin and sexy collarbones peeked out. Her figure was smoking hot, with curves that screamed mature, homely charm. Shen Lang also noticed she was carrying a supermarket shopping bag with the same logo as his, filled with fruits and vegetables.
Shen Lang smiled and started a conversation,
“Sister Xia, you’re shopping at Baihui too? I didn’t see you earlier.”
Xia Shuyi smiled back warmly,
“I did see you—I just didn’t want to bother you since it’s Saturday and the store was packed.”
Just then, the duck toy mounted on the front of Shen Lang’s scooter suddenly started quacking loudly. Startled, the little culprit quickly withdrew his hand and scampered over to Xia Shuyi’s leg. Clinging tightly to her ample thigh, he buried his little head in the folds of her skirt, peeking out every now and then to curiously eye the tall man chatting with his mom.
Xia Shuyi chuckled,
“See? That little one sure is mischievous.”
She rubbed her daughter’s head with a mock-annoyed smile that was full of affection—clearly, she loved her daughter very much. Shen Lang just grinned to himself when the system’s options popped up again.
[1: Take the duck toy off and give it to Xia Mengmeng. Ask her how old she is or what grade she’s in, and strike up a friendly chat!]
[2: Give Xia Mengmeng a stern lecture—warn her that if you steal a needle as a kid, you’ll be swiping gold when you’re older!]
[3: Squat down in front of Xia Mengmeng and, with a smile, say: ‘This duck toy isn’t fun—wanna see your big bro’s big duck?’]
Smirking, Shen Lang mused,
“Girls are always so naughty when they’re little—my little sister was irresistibly adorable back in the day.”
He removed the duck toy from the front of his scooter, squatted down in front of Xia Mengmeng, and gave it a couple of squeezes so it let out its goofy quacks.
Then he said,
“Mengmeng, come here—big bro’s giving you this duck.”
Xia Shuyi waved her hand nonchalantly, and Mengmeng retorted in a tiny, firm voice,
“No need, little Shen.”
Shen Lang grinned,
“It’s nothing—just some cheap stuff I got from PDD for a few bucks.”
Xia Mengmeng reached out her hand but quickly pulled it back. She looked up at her mom with big, round, expectant eyes.
Then, Shen Lang teased,
“Come on, silly girl—why don’t you thank your big bro?”
Xia Shuyi affectionately rubbed her daughter’s head as her love overflowed. Peeking out from behind her mom’s legs, Xia Mengmeng timidly accepted the duck and said in a clear, sweet voice,
“Thank you, little bro Shen.”
Shen Lang replied with a smile,
“No need.”
Then, patting the little girl’s head, he feigned curiosity,
“Let me guess—Mengmeng, you’re in middle kindergarten, right?”
“Nope.”
The little girl shook her head like a wacky rattle and corrected in her cute baby voice,
“I’m already in the big class!”
Shen Lang, playing along with a surprised look, exclaimed,
“Wow, big class? Mengmeng, you’re amazing!”
Little did he know, Xia Shuyi had already filled him in on all the basics about her daughter last night. Shen Lang purposely guessed her grade wrong just to let Mengmeng proudly reveal the truth—giving him an easy way to compliment her. After all, most little kids love showing off a bit in front of strangers, even if it’s just something trivial. This wasn’t a system option—it was just Shen Lang’s own tactic. He actually has two little girls just like this at home, though they’re all grown up now.
