If other guys found out that Su Lexuan had been getting all lovey-dovey with some guy just a little while ago, you can bet her admirers would swarm the Zhuhai University forums—and they’d dig up every last bit of dirt to track him down!
“No way, don’t get the wrong idea—he’s just a friend.”
Pretending to be cool, Su Lexuan pouted slightly as she quickly changed the subject, “Aren’t you guys watching a horror movie? Why are you fussing over me?”
“Oh Lexuan, the movie ended ages ago! How obsessed are you with this guy?”
One of the roommates grumbled in an annoyed tone before adding, with equal parts curiosity and excitement, “I’m dying to know what charm this guy has that could drive all the Zhuhai University fans wild.”
“I told you it’s not… Wait, is the movie over?”
Su Lexuan stared at her laptop in disbelief—the screen was rolling subtitles in a goofy foreign accent. This was a two-hour horror movie! Which meant she’d been chatting with Shen Lang for over two hours? Time had seriously flown by!
Seeing that Su Lexuan stubbornly refused to admit he was her boyfriend, the roommates didn’t dare press any further. With some people off showering and others buried in vocabulary drills, the dorm quickly turned into a noisy madhouse.
That short-haired girl, who had just switched off the horror movie, fired up her game to rank up.
“Lexuan, Lexuan!”
Seizing a break between matches, the short-haired girl—Ye Xinxin, Su Lexuan’s friend since middle school—glanced at the roommate busy listening to English words through her headphones, then eagerly climbed onto Su Lexuan’s bed and whispered,
“Is this guy really from our school? I’ve got like hundreds of besties—you’re not gonna leave me in the dark, right?”
The two had grown up together, practically like sisters—their families were tight, and aside from a few private matters, they shared everything. While bubbly, ever-sunny Su Lexuan was a total sweetheart, Ye Xinxin was a certified player—the online kind.
Ye Xinxin was a hardcore gamer who dabbled in almost every title. Too bad she was a bit clumsy at it and often got roasted by her teammates. So she’d set up accounts on every gaming forum, posting her hot photos to lure in single, game-obsessed guys to help her rank up. And with a voice as sweet and smooth as hers—delivered in a seductive tone, no less—she’d chat up those nerds until they were completely smitten. Even some semi-famous male streamers had played the role of her wingmen. But the minute any of them suggested meeting IRL or jumping on a video call, she’d kick them to the curb and scout out the next sucker to boost her score.
For her, games were games and reality was a whole different ballgame. She wasn’t into lazy dudes who just lounged around at home with zero ambition—unless, of course, they were really cute.
“Oh come on, it’s really not like that.”
Blushing, Su Lexuan mumbled, “I just met him this afternoon while I was out buying chestnuts—there’s no way he’s my boyfriend!”
“What? You only knew him for like ten minutes and he already asked for your WeChat? And you actually gave it to him?”
“When did you get so casual?” Ye Xinxin asked in disbelief.
Su Lexuan opened her mouth as if to explain but then froze—she was too embarrassed to admit that she was the one who actually went over and grabbed Shen Lang’s WeChat.
“Ugh… you didn’t end up with a scumbag, did you?”
Cautiously, Ye Xinxin warned, “That guy from the Economics department, Ling Hai, has been chasing you for months—buying you breakfast and even rolling up in a fancy sports car to ask you out to movies—and you haven’t even given him a proper hello!”
“No way, he was super nervous when he talked to me—it even felt kind of awkward.”
Su Lexuan answered honestly, “Scumbags are pros at putting on an act.”
“Let me see what you two were chatting about—I’m your bestie, after all, and I’ve got to make sure you’re not getting played.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Su Lexuan handed over her phone and pulled up her chat history with Shen Lang. Even though Ye Xinxin was a bit of a player herself online, Su Lexuan trusted her as a veteran when it came to dealing with guys.
Ye Xinxin scrolled through the messages for a while, and couldn’t help feeling a little impressed—this guy really knew how to chat. Judging by all those cute emojis Su Lexuan was using, it was clear he’d been slowly chipping away at her defenses. Su Lexuan had gone from playing hard to get to getting more and more into the conversation. If it weren’t for the roommates in the dorm, Ye Xinxin was sure her silly bestie would have already been on a voice call—or even video chatting—with him!
Sitting there, Su Lexuan was a bit shocked to realize that she hadn’t noticed time flying by as they talked. Looking back, she was stunned to see just how much she and Shen Lang had actually discussed.
“So, what do you think? Is he a scumbag?”
Su Lexuan nervously looked at the earnest Ye Xinxin. Honestly, she wasn’t even sure why she felt so anxious—maybe she was worried that if Shen Lang turned out to be a scumbag, she’d have to cut him off.
“I kinda think so, but I’m not really sure.”
Ye Xinxin gave a vague answer. From the chat, Shen Lang’s messages were friendly and pretty normal—nothing overly suggestive or tailored to what Su Lexuan liked. Just from that, calling him a scumbag might be a bit over the top.
“By the way, just check out his social feed—you’ll know!”
Suddenly, Ye Xinxin snapped to it and playfully smacked Su Lexuan’s smooth, pale thigh. Su Lexuan rubbed her thigh and asked curiously,
“So what can you tell from someone’s social feed?”
“Duh, our social feeds as players always give off that ‘I’m single and easy to get’ vibe.”
Then Ye Xinxin explained, “Guys are pretty much the same—they add a bit of sadness on top, like pretending they’ve just gotten dumped, so that when a girl reaches out to console them, they get what they want.”
A bit confused, Su Lexuan just held her head and gave an awkward laugh, “Geez, your scene is such a mess…”
“Hehe, yeah, I might be a player too, but I’m not using those guys for anything else—I just use them to boost my game scores.” Ye Xinxin stuck her tongue out and giggled defensively, “Otherwise, where do you think I get all these King accounts from?”
