- Chapter 23 - Brother-in-Law?
Han Feng looked at the three pits he had created in the ground with his newly learned technique. Unable to gauge the full extent of the attack’s power, he sighed and covered the holes with some dirt, deciding it was time to make dinner.
In the following days, Han Feng fell into a comfortable routine of tending to his herb garden, cooking, eating, sleeping, and basking in the sun. Occasionally, he would bicker with the little fox, but otherwise, he rarely left his home. Life was simple, and Han Feng enjoyed every moment of it.
With Boss Ma gone and no new overseer assigned to the area yet, no one came to bother Han Feng. Plus, since Wang Mian hadn’t yet broken through to the fifth layer of Qi Refining, he still technically held the status of a servant disciple. Therefore, the house still belonged to both of them.
For now, Han Feng was living alone in comfort.
He had already planned his next move. Once he became an outer disciple, he would get his own residence. He could move there, plant herbs in the courtyard, and continue to lie flat, basking in the sun every day.
After a few days of peace, Han Feng had nearly forgotten about Ye Longyuan’s threat.
Until one night.
It was late, and Han Feng was sound asleep when the little fox suddenly shouted, “There’s malicious intent!”
Moments later, a loud boom reverberated outside, jolting Han Feng awake.
He sprang out of bed, grabbing the sword that Jiang Surou had given him, and looked out the window.
Two men in black were standing outside the front gate, staring blankly at his formation, clearly confused.
One of the men in black pulled out a communication jade slip and quickly said, “Young master, there’s a problem. His house is protected by a defensive formation. We just ran right into it. It hurt a lot.”
Whatever the reply was on the other end, the man in black responded, “It’s no good. I tried. This formation is solid, and it even has counterattack capabilities. We won’t be able to break it in the time we have. The two of us aren’t strong enough.”
“Understood. We’re pulling out now!”
The two assassins prepared to leave when a voice called out from inside the house.
“Leaving already? In such a hurry? Where are you off to?”
Han Feng deactivated the formation’s sound-dampening function and stepped out of the house, yawning, the little fox in his arms. He smiled at the two men in black.
It was obvious—they had been sent by Ye Longyuan again to assassinate him.
Honestly, Han Feng had to admire Ye Longyuan’s persistence. Once wasn’t enough, so he tried a second time. When the second time failed, he went for a third.
But this was already the third attempt. Was Ye Longyuan really that desperate?
Han Feng slowly walked forward, sword in hand.
Surprisingly, instead of fleeing, the two men in black stood their ground when they saw Han Feng coming out.
It seems like this guy wants to fight, they thought. If he’s going to fight, he has to step out of the formation or deactivate it. That’ll be our chance to kill him.
One of the men in black spoke into the communication jade slip again, “Young master, he’s coming out. We can kill him now.”
Han Feng’s face twitched.
Seriously? With that kind of attitude, do you think I’m still coming out?
Why did he buy this formation in the first place? Wasn’t it to protect himself?
Han Feng weighed his options. If he fought them and killed them, Ye Longyuan—idiot or not—would definitely figure out it was Han Feng who did it. That would only prompt him to send stronger assassins next time.
It would be an endless cycle of trouble.
But just as Han Feng was hesitating, he saw two streaks of rainbow light flying across the sky. The glowing symbols on the streaks revealed that they were disciples of the Enforcement Hall.
Well, that couldn’t have been timed better.
Han Feng immediately shouted, “Help! Murder! Someone’s trying to kill me!”
The two streaks of light veered toward Han Feng’s direction, while the two men in black paled and immediately split up, trying to escape.
The two Enforcement Hall disciples split up as well, each one chasing after one of the fleeing assassins.
The man who had been speaking into the jade slip quickly said, “Young master, the Enforcement Hall is here. We’re not going to make it!”
With that, he crushed the jade slip and stopped running.
Jiang Huayang, one of the Enforcement Hall disciples, landed in front of him and raised a hand to grab him.
Just then, the exposed skin of the assassin turned a shade of purple, and he collapsed to the ground, dead.
Jiang Huayang’s face darkened. He crouched down, ripped the mask off the man’s face, and cursed, “Damn it!”
Throwing the mask aside in frustration, he grabbed the body and flew back toward Han Feng’s courtyard.
His junior, the sharp-faced disciple, landed beside him moments later, also carrying a dead body.
“Senior brother, he took poison,” the sharp-faced disciple said, dropping the corpse to the ground with a sigh.
“Typical. These guys are trained family assassins. The moment they fail a mission and can’t escape, they’ll poison themselves. We won’t be able to get any information out of them,” Jiang Huayang muttered. He didn’t even glance at the body, turning his gaze to Han Feng’s courtyard instead.
Knocking on the formation barrier, he smiled and said, “Junior Brother Han Feng, we’re from the Enforcement Hall. Would you mind deactivating the formation so we can come in and have a chat?”
“Sure, Senior Brother,” Han Feng replied.
Had the two Enforcement Hall disciples not chased down those assassins, Han Feng might not have trusted them in the middle of the night.
Jiang Huayang and his junior stepped inside, and Jiang Huayang said, “Go ahead and re-activate your formation.”
Han Feng hesitated for a moment, then complied.
He could sense the overwhelming strength coming from these two men. Both of them seemed to be Foundation Establishment cultivators.
Jiang Huayang stood tall in front of Han Feng, hands clasped behind his back, and introduced himself, “Junior Brother Han Feng, let me introduce myself. I’m Jiang Huayang, and this is my junior, Lu Yufa. We’re both disciples from the main peak’s Enforcement Hall.”
“Understood. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Senior Brothers. Please, come inside.” Han Feng led the two men into his humble home.
His house had just one room, with two beds on either side, a table in the middle, and a few chairs scattered around.
In fact, the most valuable thing Han Feng owned was the deck chair outside where he spent his days sunbathing.
Jiang Huayang looked around the room and chuckled, “This place is so shabby that even a thief would cry and leave you a couple of bags of rice out of pity.”
Han Feng scratched his head awkwardly, laughing, “Apologies for the poor accommodations, Senior Brothers.”
Poor indeed. He didn’t even have any tea to offer his guests.
The two Enforcement Hall disciples sat down, and Han Feng asked, “May I ask how the two of you know my name?”
Lu Yufa chuckled, “Your name is pretty well-known. Everyone knows about—”
“I’m Jiang Surou’s older brother,” Jiang Huayang interrupted, speaking calmly.
“Her… older brother?”
Han Feng’s eyes widened, and before he could stop himself, he blurted out, “Brother-in-law?”
Jiang Huayang’s face paled with exasperation.
“You’ve got some nerve, kid. You’ve only been Dao partners with my sister for a few days, and you’re already calling me brother-in-law?”
Han Feng chuckled, realizing he was safe now that Jiang Huayang was on his side. He relaxed and sat down without hesitation.
