I’d Do Anything She Says

A week ago, I confessed to another childhood friend of mine, Yuko Asahina, right at the start of the new term for some inexplicable reason and got rejected.

It wasn’t just a simple rejection.

She told me she’d just gotten a boyfriend three days ago.

What’s more, she said if I had confidently confessed before her boyfriend did, she would’ve dated me.

So, even if she told me to be confident, honestly, I don’t understand what that means.

What should I be confident about?

It’s as if I’m just one of the many insignificant others.

I fell for her first, yet someone who came later snatched her away.

And I can’t help but worry, thinking, “If only I had confessed earlier,” or “Perhaps, to Asahina, I was just an insignificant person.”

“But now, I think maybe it’s better that you didn’t date Asahina.”

“Huh? Are you trying to pick a fight?”

“No-no, that’s not it! I just didn’t expect her to say something like, ‘I would’ve dated you if you confessed first,’ especially since she has a boyfriend now. Someone like that…even if you dated her, seems like she’d be troublesome later on…”

For a moment, I thought Tojo was mocking me, but it seemed like he was implying that ‘maybe Asahina wasn’t really that good of a person’.

“But I don’t want you to speak ill of someone I’ve liked since elementary school…”

“Well, that’s true. My bad, I was being too insensitive.”

“No, I’ve been making you worry this past week, so I understand that you’re just concerned. There’s no need to apologize. If anything, I feel sorry for making you worry.”

We comforted each other, and I was reminded that what one really needs is a good friend.

After a hug, we walked towards the school gate with our arms around each other’s shoulders, feeling the intense gaze of some female students.

“Hey, when I said ‘there are as many women as there are stars’ earlier, you said ‘but there’s only one her’. What if Himuro Reika, walking over there, confessed to you?”

“Oh? That’s never going to happen. Even if the world turned upside down, Himuro Reika and I are from entirely different worlds. I can’t even imagine dating her.”

“Is that so?”

“That’s how it is. If she did confess, I’d do anything she says.”

That casual conversation made me temporarily forget about my heartbreak and felt comforting.
