This Wave of Zombies is No Good - Chapter 52
Everyone in the room craned their necks, waiting for Gong Qianye to open the medicine box in her hand.
The driver, Zhang Yuan, was pale and trembling uncontrollably.
Suddenly, Gong Qianye felt the object in her hand was very heavy.
This small thing was carrying a person’s life and death.
She nervously opened the medicine box slowly, her gaze falling on it.
Then Gong Qianye let out a sigh of relief.
“It’s negative.”
At that moment, everyone felt as if a heavy burden had been lifted. Zhang Yuan was even more overjoyed and tearful, almost getting up to kowtow to them again, “Thank you…thank you…without you, I would have died here today.”
“It’s okay, you’re lucky. Rest well,” Gong Qianye smiled at him. The driver’s hanging heart relaxed, and his breathing gradually steadied.
Although the roars of zombies still came from outside the door, the nerves of everyone in the room finally relaxed.
Zou Lang was cutting potato shreds and said, “The scrambled eggs with tomatoes are ready, I’ll stir-fry some potato shreds later. There’s some unopened pickles in the fridge. We’re going to spend the night here. The injured lie in bed, the lady sleeps on the sofa, and I and the uncle will sleep on the floor.”
“Who’s the injured?” Yu Jingtang was unhappy to be classified as injured.
Zou Lang looked back at him, “Don’t you see what your face looks like?”
Indeed, Yu Jingtang’s condition was not very good. Although he had changed out of his wet clothes, he was still very cold, so cold that his joints felt sore. He was now feeling dizzy and a bit sleepy.
Suddenly, Gong Qianye sat next to Yu Jingtang, raised her hand to touch his forehead, and was immediately frightened by the temperature. She exclaimed in surprise, “You have a fever! Your forehead is so hot! When did it start? When we broke in…you weren’t just holding on, were you?”
Yu Jingtang shook his head and opened his mouth hoarsely, “It’s okay, I’ll be fine in a while.”
“No, people can become delirious from fever!” Gong Qianye said as she began to rummage through the medical box, taking out a thermometer and skillfully measuring Yu Jingtang’s temperature in his ear. The thermometer immediately lit up with a red light, emitting a series of alarms, 40.2°C, this temperature was obviously off the charts.
“I…I saw some fever-reducing drugs just now.” Gong Qianye went to find the medicine again.
“It’s not a common fever…”
“Don’t let him take random medicine.”
Yu Jingtang and Zou Lang almost spoke at the same time, then looked at each other, a bit embarrassed.
“That…we have to do physical cooling!” Gong Qianye made Yu Jingtang lie on the sofa, took a towel from the bathroom to cool his head, and then helped Yu Jingtang wipe his palms with alcohol. She made some inferences from Zou Lang and Yu Jingtang’s reactions and asked, “This isn’t the first time, is it?”
Facing the doctor, Yu Jingtang didn’t know how to describe his “condition” at this time, “I can’t say for sure, I was injured once before, and since then…my body has been a bit strange.”
“Let him rest, I’ll take care of him later. The rice is ready, you guys serve some first,” Zou Lang said while stir-frying potato shreds. Although he was still heartbroken, he had experienced Yu Jingtang’s sudden condition several times before and was somewhat used to it. Compared to the previous dangers, this episode was considered very mild.
Seeing that the rice was ready, Gong Qianye served some, first giving Yu Jingtang a bowl, then serving the driver, and was about to hand it to Uncle Qin, when Qin, who had been assisting in finding things on the side, suddenly spoke, “I found something… it’s a diary, I think… you guys should take a look.”
Zou Lang put down the spatula and took the diary. He originally wanted to glance at it and continue cooking. But the more he flipped through it, the more serious his face became, almost forgetting to flip the pot.
It wasn’t until Gong Qianye noticed and came over to save the day that a pot of potato shreds didn’t turn into potato crust.
“What’s written in it?” Yu Jingtang asked anxiously, he didn’t know what the content was, but it seemed more important to Zou Lang than eating.
Zou Lang handed the book over, Gong Qianye took it, she didn’t hand it to Yu Jingtang but said, “I’ll read it to you.”
By this time it was already past nine o’clock in the evening, the rain outside had lessened a bit, becoming fine and dense, the bus was still parked in the parking lot, the zombies huddled around the bus gradually dispersed. But there were still two or three zombies wandering not far away.
To save power, just in case, after eight o’clock, the people on the bus decided to turn off the car lights.
The entire bus was plunged into darkness.
People were hungry, cold, lonely, facing an unknown future.
“Mom, I’m scared…” A teenage girl snuggled up to her mother, “If only the soldier uncle from earlier was here…” Her voice was very small, but in the quiet and dark bus, people still heard it.
Remembering the people who had gotten off the bus earlier, someone spoke up, “If the driver hasn’t mutated…maybe he won’t turn into a zombie.” This sentence carried a bit of regret, if those two soldiers were here, they would be much safer.
“Did anyone get the phone numbers of those two soldiers? Or the female doctor?” A white-collar man suddenly asked.
The bus was silent, people shook their heads, the situation was too urgent just now, no one thought to leave a contact, they didn’t even know their names.
“Anyway, they said they would come find us at daybreak.” The man holding a child comforted.
“Maybe we… shouldn’t have driven them away.” The old lady in the front row showed a hint of regret. “I always feel… uneasy…” She remembered her son who was bitten to death by zombies at home, who was also this age. She had voted in favor earlier, feeling like she had suddenly become a butcher.
“Don’t talk nonsense here!” The fat man suddenly said, “It was a decision made by everyone’s vote! You guys don’t think, what if the driver turned into a zombie and bit us all? Are you going to gamble with your own lives?”
Silence.
No one spoke, they were like a flock of lambs, without any self-protection ability, even making a sound had to rely on the indignation in their hearts.
The fat man spat again, gritting his teeth and said, “In this end of the world, what’s the use of morality. Everyone should take care of themselves.”
“Mom…” A call suddenly came from the darkness.
“Who’s calling?” Someone on the bus asked, everyone looked at each other.
Facing the puzzled looks, a mother hugged her child tightly, “It’s not my child.”
“Mom!” Another cry came, it was a child crying out for his mother.
“Whose child is this? Stop calling, or you’ll attract the zombies!”
“This voice, it seems to be coming from outside.”
“It’s outside, look, there’s a child outside!”
The people in the bus suddenly crowded to one side of the bus, looking down from the window.
There was a child outside the bus, who looked to be about seven or eight years old, rubbing his eyes with both hands, circling around the bus.
“In this heavy rain, with zombies all over the ground, how could there suddenly be a child?”
“Perhaps, he’s a survivor from another bus.” Someone looked at the other buses parked on the side, they hadn’t checked earlier if there were still people in the buses.
“Mom… Mom, where are you?” The child continued to cry.
A passenger in the front row turned on the bus lights, and everyone could see more clearly, it was a little boy.
“Mom…Mom…I’m scared.” The child continued to cry, he was limping along, almost falling. “Mom, it’s cold outside, can I get on the bus…”
The child weakly pounded on the bus door. And it became more and more urgent, such a sound in the dark night, was even more heart-stopping than the scratching sound of zombie claws on the door.
What was even more terrifying was that a zombie about twenty meters away seemed to have heard the sound and started to slowly walk this way.
“He shouldn’t be a zombie, zombies can’t talk.”
“Didn’t the TV say that zombies can evolve?”
“What if he’s really just a child.”
“What if he’s already been bitten?”
“If he’s already been bitten, he’s still just a child, we can tie him up!”
“We still shouldn’t let him on the bus, this child isn’t from our bus. If anyone is to blame, it’s his bad luck.”
“Let’s vote.” A passenger suggested, “Raise your hand if you agree to let him on the bus.”
One, two, the number of people raising their hands gradually increased.
“I… I can’t… I can’t just watch a child being eaten by a zombie…” The old woman raised her hand.
“If we open the door now, there’s still time!”
“I… I regretted my choice last time, I won’t this time.”
There were still 34 people on the bus, 17 people raised their hands.
The father holding the child looked at the sleeping baby in his arms, hesitated for a while, and also raised his hand.
18 people.
Everyone’s eyes fell on the fat man holding the keys.
The fat man took two steps back, the gaze of the crowd made him feel a bit scared, “Have you forgotten? The two soldiers said before they left, don’t open the door!”
“You’re really selfish! You wouldn’t even save a child!”
“Enough! If it weren’t for you, those two soldiers wouldn’t have gone down with the driver.”
Someone approached him, in the narrow bus, the fat man had nowhere to go, he turned his head wanting to throw the keys out the window, but suddenly lost his balance and fell to the ground, for a moment he even wanted to swallow the huge key. But he was held down by the crowd, someone took the key from his hand.
“Hurry up, the zombies are coming, this child is going to be eaten.”
“Be careful, maybe he was bitten by a zombie.”
“If he’s a zombie, kill him.”
“Yeah, if he’s a zombie, he’s just a little zombie. Give me a fruit knife.”
The fat man sat in the back of the bus, his heart aching, but his gaze fell on the fire hammer hanging not far away.
No one on the bus was listening to him anymore. He regretted a bit what he had said earlier, in this end of the world, what’s the use of morality. Perhaps it was this sentence that stung the nerves of these “lambs”.
They were eager to prove that in this end of the world, their “humanity” had not completely disappeared, even though the cost might be too high for them to bear.
The bus door slowly opened…
