- Chapter 42 - The true monster is...
The real monster is…
With momentum, Asagami’s Father aimed the tip of his sword at my heart. I slightly tilted my body and moved behind him, but his sword did not miss its target.
“It’s over!”
In an instant, he changed the direction of the sword, thrusting it again towards my chest. It was a feint; he pretended to follow through with his momentum only to observe and ensure his strike after I dodged.
Although he seemed to be infuriated by being provoked by someone much younger, he should indeed be acknowledged as the head of the Asagami Group, carefully observing my movements.
But—so was I.
“What…”
Asagami’s Father, with a look of surprise, and Rio, who wore an expression that seemed to be utterly repulsed by the situation.
No doubt, their reactions were due to me stopping Asagami’s Father’s wrist, which held the sword, with my heavily bandaged right arm that was so injured it was practically raw.
However, it seemed I was still far from fully recovered, as considerable pain shot through my arm just from gripping it with force.
“…You never cease to amaze. How can you remain so composed?”
“What else could it be but a bluff? Unfortunately, I don’t have congenital insensitivity to pain, you know.”
Taking advantage of Asagami’s Father’s stunned state, I knocked the sword from his grip with my left arm, simultaneously feeling an intense surge of pain.
As Asagami’s Father desperately tried to free his right arm and raised his free left arm, I confirmed his movement and struck him squarely on the nose with a headbutt.
“Ugh… You…!”
“Heh, you’ve got quite the handsome face now. Suits you well.”
As he grimaced in pain, with blood dripping from his nose to the ground, I couldn’t help but taunt him.
Asagami’s Father, having lost his trusted sword, tried to quickly retreat.
But there was no way I would allow that.
Now that he was unarmed, it was the perfect opportunity to go on the offensive.
I tightened my grip on his right arm and pulled his wrist toward me, closing the distance between us to almost nothing.
“Sorry, but given the situation, I’m going to have to go all out.”
“Don’t get cocky, brat!”
Asagami’s Father threw a punch with his free left arm, but I suppressed it with my own left arm.
He had likely walked the path of the sword since his youth, so his punches were several levels stronger than those of an amateur.
But, of course, compared to that woman—Mio—the force transmitted to my palm wasn’t particularly impressive.
So, what about his physical abilities?
I drove a full-force knee into the unprotected abdomen of Asagami’s Father.
“Gah!!”
Clutching his stomach, Asagami’s Father dropped to his knees, crouching. Looking down, I could see the floor stained with the red liquid of his nose and mouth blood.
Asagami’s Father, still weakly trying to grab my right leg, was hopeless.
Seeing this, I kicked his back as if he were a soccer ball.
“Aghhhhhhhhh!!”
Asagami’s Father’s death throes echoed throughout the room.
I then mounted him, pressing his forehead back against the floor, my body straddling his.
“What are you…! A monster!?”
“How rude. Who do you think made me this way?”
It was at that moment that an expression of fear, known as terror, surfaced on the face of Asagami’s Father, who until now had been relentlessly pursuing my life.
“You understand now, right? You can’t kill me. So, this is your last chance. Surrender. Or you really will die.”
“Don’t joke with me…! I am—”
I lifted his forehead I had been pinning down and slammed it back to the ground.
“I see, you’ve made your choice.”
While still restraining Asagami’s Father’s body, I reached out with my free left arm.
There lay the katana he had attempted to use to take my life moments earlier.
Enduring the pain, I slowly dragged the sword into my hand.
“Nii-san, you’re not really going to…”
Rio seemed to anticipate my next action.
As expected, as I lifted the sword I held, Asagami’s Father’s expression turned to one of despair.
“You, you…!”
“What are you so surprised about now? Don’t tell me you came here to kill me thinking you wouldn’t be killed yourself? Surely you were prepared for the possibility of the tables being turned?”
Pointing the lifted sword at Asagami’s Father’s heart, I was only a few centimeters away, not even needing to exert much force to bring it down.
Anyone, even a small child, could understand what would happen if I released the sword at this point.
“No… I… I don’t want to die…”
The terror of the impending end was evident in his trembling voice.
Suddenly, Asagami’s Father began to writhe and struggle as if possessed.
“I don’t want to die… I don’t want to die! This is a joke, right?! Stop it! I… I don’t want to die yet!! I don’t want to die!!”
“Hey, hey, pretty unseemly for a grown man, huh? Besides, I gave you two chances. You’re the one who blew them. And now you’re begging for your life? Seems a bit too convenient, doesn’t it?”
Asagami’s Father desperately attempted to resist, but pinned under my bodyweight of over 60 kilograms, he couldn’t move satisfactorily.
“Stop it!! Please, stop!! I don’t want to die!! I don’t want to die!! I don’t want to dieeeeee!!”
“You don’t want to die, huh… I can relate. I felt the same way. But still, you tried to do it. Probably, your wife felt the same. But still, you tried. So, it’s only fair that you get what’s coming to you, right?”
“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAGHGHGHGHGHGHGHHHHHHH!!!”
The screams that no longer sounded human erupted from Asagami’s Father.
In a life where everything had gone well, he had never imagined such an end.
But still, I had no intention of stopping.
I glanced in another direction, where Rio stood with a calm smile on her face, as if everything was settled, seemingly unaffected by Asagami’s Father’s screams.
Next to her, I made eye contact with Hina, who wore a starkly contrasting expression.
“Ah…!”
She hastily looked away. What lay beyond her expression was—sorrow, regret, and fear.
But that was fine. Without it, there would be no point in doing this.
I then looked further back. There was Asagami’s Mother, who had nearly had her life’s light snuffed out by her own husband, silently watching me with hollow eyes.
Without changing her expression at all, without even listening to her husband’s pleas and panic, she seemed to be accepting the reality in front of her.
“Sorry, but it seems no one’s on your side. Well, it’s what they call poetic justice, isn’t it?”
“No… I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die!! Someone, please help meeeeee!!”
As Asagami’s Father’s screams resounded, I swung down the sword with all my might on “the spot I had already aimed for.”
A few seconds later, Asagami’s Father showed no reaction.
