- Chapter 36 - Getting a Drink at the Base
The person in charge of feeding the pigs explained: “Although these tumours are disgusting, they are still edible. The meat of the black pigs is less polluted. We cut off these tumours every day, however, they will grow back within a night. For the purpose of sustainable development, we usually only cut off these tumours.”
It was just like how one was reluctant to slaughter an old hen that regularly laid eggs.
Wen Bei pointed at the feeding trough and asked: “What are they eating?”
”It’s insect faeces. Almost all the animals in the farm feed on them. Do you want to go and take a look?”
Wen Bei nodded, then he was led to the area where insect faeces was made.
He never really expected that the so-called insect faeces referred to its literal meaning.
Big fat white worms lay on the ground, and workers had to collect the sticky substance they secreted.
The secretions of the fat worms were the source of food for other animals, thus they were an indispensable part of the farm.
The breeder sounded somewhat: “These bugs look disgusting but don’t think of them like that. Without them, we simply can’t afford to feed so many mutant animals.”
The faeces of the bugs were necessary for the survival of other animals. And these bugs could easily survive by feeding on the garbage produced by the base.
Next to the bugs was a group of strange-looking creatures, which were suspected to be geese prior to the apocalypse, but each of them could breathe fire. The keepers did not dare to get close and would only throw in food through the thick concrete wall.
Time to time, the smell of something burning wafted in the air, produced by them while fighting with each other and burning each other into roast geese.
But the meat was sour and didn’t smell very good after being roasted.
The bodies of the burned geese would be picked out and used along with some worthless materials to make cheap whole-grain cakes.
The base officials had been stockpiling multi-grain cakes in case of an emergency someday.
Wen Bei: “Besides these animals, do you raise any plants?”
After seeing the animals, he suddenly gave up the idea of raising edible animals in the hotel.
In the apocalypse, even edible animals had become monsters due to pollution. Without a stable system, it was difficult to carry out group breeding.
The breeder scratched his head: “Yes, but I’m not authorised to go there.”
Captain Lan: “Just follow me.”
Wen Bei followed him, and after passing through a greenhouse aisle, he finally saw the planting area of the base.
Large stretches of plants lay before them, all of them were ears of rice which had grown taller than humans, and they were not golden but lush green.
Wen Bei had eaten the rice of the base and knew its texture: it was hard and not soft at all.
Even drier and harder than the usual leftover rice.
His focus was not on the rice, but on the vegetable and fruit area to the left of the tall fields.
There were vines clumped together everywhere, with colourful fruits growing on the green vines. Each one looked juicy and as big as an apple.
Wen Bei: “What kind of mutated fruits are those?”
Huang Qian answered: “Grapes.”
Wen Bei tilted his head slightly with curiosity: “Grapes?”
Huang Qian: “The price of one plum is close to that of a meal, and it is also very sour, several times more sour than a plum. There’s no taste besides the sourness.”
As soon as Huang Qian spotted the grapes, her mouth started to water.
The memories of eating the fruit returned to her mind— the sourness would make her lose her mind and then return to her senses. She couldn’t help but sigh quietly: “It would be great if I could have the chance to eat normal fruit for once.”
Wen Bei glanced at her and smiled without saying anything.
When Captain Lan heard her wish, his originally elegant smile slightly deepened: “Miss Huang, didn’t you say there is a hotel outside the base where we can eat normal food?”
Huang Qian narrowed her eyes slightly: “It seems that this news has spread to the extent where even the authorities are aware of it.”
Captain Lan smiled slightly and said, “The leader is very interested. If possible, I would also like to see which deity has opened such a magical place.”
Wen Bei, who was observing how the Base grew grapes, was suddenly called out. He turned around with a puzzled look on his face, and his cat’s eyes revealed innocence.
Wen Bei spoke sincerely: “Yeah, I’m also curious about who is so capable of opening a hotel like this.”
He could boast about himself without blushing or getting nervous.
Huang Qian: “…”
Chapter 32
After leaving the breeding area, Captain Lan told them that he had other things to do and left.
Watching his hurried back, Huang Qian sighed that she had indeed made the right decision by rejecting the official invitation from the base and choosing to be an independent mercenary.
Although compared to the Lawful Army who stayed in the base most of the time and did not need to go out, mercenaries seemed to be in a dangerous situation of being killed at any time, at least they had freedom.
There was no need to do useless work every day for the sake of the base and for the greater good of humanity.
Huang Qian patted Wen Bei on the shoulder. After spending half a day together, her carefree personality was completely revealed. She no longer behaved in a reserved manner: “Do you want to go to the bar with me and get a drink?”
Wen Bei had never experienced the atmosphere of polluters gathering in a group at the base. He nodded, like a good student who was lured to do bad things just after reaching adulthood. He nodded his head with clear eyes: “Okay.”
Huang Qian pressed her chest and suddenly felt guilty for leading a good child astray, but her guilt was quickly replaced by excitement.
She grinned, her red lips looked gorgeous with the bright lipstick on them: “Come on, follow me.”
…
In a dark corner of the Dark Fire Guild, Li Shi quietly sneaked in and entered the password. Someone was already waiting for him inside.
The former president of the guild turned around, and a shadow fell on his face, covering the messy scar on it.
He was so angry that his whole body was shaking. It was not until that moment that he dared to vent the anger that had been accumulating for a long time.
The fat man grabbed Li Shi’s hair and swung his head to the ground: “Waste! You are all a bunch of waste!”
He watched helplessly as his five years of hard work was destroyed within minutes, and even the members who had once bowed and curried for favours with him were now wagging their tails to their new master’s whims.
There was a big hole on Li Shi’s forehead, revealing the rotten flesh inside. His ability was related to corruption. And because of pollution, his body was also badly corroded.
He wiped off the smelly blood without a care, and approached the fat man with a hunched back: “President, you are the real boss in my heart. That man is just complacent for a while. When the vice president returns, we will definitely be able to defeat him.”
As expected, the fat man’s reaction turned just as worse as Li Shi had expected. He asked back unhappily, “You mean I’m not as good as the vice-president?”
Li Shi: “No, no. That was not what I meant”
The more the fat man thought about it, the uglier his expression became. He was used to being highly praised by everyone. When he thought about how the vice-president would ridicule him for not being able to protect the guild, his own anger almost burned him.
Seeing that his goal had been achieved, Li Shu quickly said while the iron was still hot to strike: “Perhaps we can resolve this matter before the Vice President arrives.”
The fat man looked at him and asked, “What do you want to do?”
Whenever he thought of Qiu Tin’s face, he felt pain in every bone of his body.
That man was truly terrifying. He had never seen a person who was not affected at all after being besieged by several crazy polluters.
There was no other person like him in the base.
Even the darkest cards of their guild could not sway him.
Li Shi’s eyes rolled around: “Do you remember the young man who had come to the guild for a while this morning?”
A strange light flashed in the fat man’s eyes: “Of course.”
That young man was extremely handsome, and if he had not met him at the wrong time, he would have definitely found a way to turn the young man into a puppet and keep him by his side.
Li Shi: “He is an ordinary person, and he seems to have a close relationship with Qiu Tin. Wouldn’t it be easy for you to capture an ordinary person as a hostage?”
The fat man paused, thinking about the pros and cons.
If it were before, he would definitely not dare to agree, but Li Shi’s “unintentional” words from earlier had thoroughly stimulated him.
When he thought of the sarcastic expression on the vice-president’s gloomy face, he wanted to destroy everything at hand.
The fat man frowned, and after thinking it over, he finally agreed: “Then tell me, how are we going to use this hostage?”
…
On the other side, Wen Bei had just drank some wine and, thus his face was slightly flushed.
Night fell at some point, and the bar started playing loud music. Men and women were whispering in the dim light, occasionally twisting their bodies to show off their figures and charm.
In this age where life and death was unpredictable, if a pair liked each other, then they could spend the night together.
No one was pretentious.
When Wen Bei first stepped into the bar, people never stopped looking at him. His black hair and black eyes were really out of place with the current times where the hair and eye colours had mutated into countless different shades; in such an era, Wen Bei’s unique appearance made people unable to help but pay attention to him.
If he hadn’t been accompanied by the famously aggressive Huang Qian, there would have been an n number of people trying to strike up a conversation with him.
Huang Qian smiled sweetly: “Why are you blushing after just two glasses?”
Wen Bei knew that his alcohol tolerance was average, so he put down the cup and said in a very obedient manner, “I’m done.”
Huang Qian suddenly felt something that was wrong: “Are you drunk?”
No matter how low his alcohol tolerance is, there was no way he would get drunk after drinking just two glasses of beer.
Wen Bei shook his head: “No.”
Huang Qian felt relieved. She saw that Wen Bei’s eyes were still rational, with a hint of coldness, which seemed somewhat contradictory to his delicate and broken appearance. However, the mixture was surprisingly harmonious, like a piece of cold white jade that made people want to hold it in their hands and play with it.
But a slight blush had appeared on his face.
It dispelled most of the cold and aloof feeling which screamed that strangers were not allowed to approach, and added a bit of charm.
Huang Qian coughed softly to drive out all the inappropriate thoughts from her mind.
Although she liked handsome guys, she wouldn’t let herself do anything beastly to her saviour.
Fortunately, she had accompanied Wen Bei, if others had seen such a beauty up close, how could they control themselves? Of course, they wouldn’t have an inch of control over themselves.
Even though Huang Qian had agreed to be his bodyguard during this period, Wen Bei still hadn’t completely let down his guard. He drank some more beer, his eyes blurred for a moment before he regained his composure: “Let’s go.”
If he didn’t return soon, then a mad dog would come looking for him.
Huang Qian: “Okay.”
As soon as they walked out of the bar, the cool evening breeze blew over.
Wen Bei’s eyes became clearer and he sensed a different atmosphere.
