- Chapter 18 - Sharing the Same Room.
A single phrase, “Human or demon,” immediately heightened the tension in the room.
“What does it matter if I’m human or demon?” Cheng Jinyang said with a smile. “My father is human, and my mother is a demon. What do you think I count as, Lord Meng Zhang?”
Murong Shu raised her eyebrows, only to hear Jiang Jiu interject from the side:
“Transgender?”
Everyone: ……
“That’s a half-demon!” Murong Shu snapped, unable to keep a straight face. She shot her a glare that practically said, Your intelligence truly disgraces us demons and devils. Then she lowered her eyelids again and added coldly, “I don’t know any Su Lili or Su Waiwai.”
“My apologies for overstepping,” Cheng Jinyang quickly replied, though his gaze shifted subtly toward Wang Wanrou.
The change in the atmosphere just now had been far too obvious. For a moment, it was as though a storm was about to erupt, only for it to dissipate without a trace the next instant. Unless Cheng Jinyang were a fool, he wouldn’t have missed it.
Wang Wanrou’s lips curved ever so slightly before returning to their usual calm. Cheng Jinyang saw this and understood: Ah, so Murong Shu is lying after all.
Before coming to Murong Shu, Cheng Jinyang had already thoroughly inquired about the situation from his Sister Xinnan. At present, the Great Emperor Ziwei was scouring mountains and seas to hunt down the former Fourth and Seventh Stars of Beidou, accused of stealing the Northern Starfire. Yet none of the Four Divine Lords had responded to her call.
The reason was simple: both fugitives were powerful, a second-rank and a third-rank. Capturing them would require true effort, with no tangible benefit to show for it—only a fool would take on such a task.
After all, the Star Lords and the Heavenly Emperor were never truly aligned. To put it bluntly, every single Star Lord harbored ambitions to overthrow the Heavenly Emperor. Which second-rank would willingly stay a second-rank forever?
Thus, this probe at Murong Shu carried minimal risk. At worst, it would make the other side wary, forcing the princess and Jiang Jiu to protect him during an escape.
But given the tense relations between the Star Lords and the Heavenly Emperor, Meng Zhang Star Lord had no reason to curry favor with the Great Emperor Ziwei. That emboldened Cheng Jinyang to take the gamble—and to his surprise, it bore fruit.
This Murong Shu clearly had some connection with Su Lili. On the bright side, she might even be a close confidant who knew her whereabouts.
That said, Su Lili was currently being hunted by the Great Emperor Ziwei, so she would naturally be on high alert. If Murong Shu spilled everything to just anyone claiming to know her, that would be far too careless. Cheng Jinyang thus decided to drop the matter, taking the opportunity to backtrack and avoid further suspicion.
The two sides resumed discussions, mostly about how Madam Luo would be secretly transported to Jingkou for care and how Murong Shu could visit discreetly. Humans and demons, snakes and rats—collaborating as a pack. Gradually, their relationship grew more amicable.
As it grew late, Murong Shu arranged accommodations for them. Each returned to their quarters, processing the day’s revelations.
“So, what’s the plan?” Back in their bedroom, after ensuring there were no ghosts lurking nearby, Cheng Jinyang couldn’t wait to ask.
“No plan,” Wang Wanrou replied.
“Oh, come on, Wanrou. Don’t keep me in suspense!” Cheng Jinyang groaned in frustration. “Sister Xinnan, help me out here…”
“What can I say?” The princess laughed. “You saw through some clues, but do you think Murong Shu didn’t see through them as well? She’ll certainly test us again. We simply need to be ready to respond.”
“Fair enough.” Cheng Jinyang realized he’d let his concern cloud his judgment, finally exhaling a sigh of relief.
Regarding Su Lili, Cheng Jinyang had already explained everything to the princess during their journey. She had been his childhood sweetheart, their bond deep and profound. Her death had left him with severe depression, something the princess had long known about—after all, she had arranged for Dr. Wu Quemei to oversee his condition daily.
Who could have guessed that Su Lili had become a great demon? Fate’s twists and turns truly were unfathomable.
“By the way, how do you know the Seventh Star of Beidou?” Jiang Jiu asked curiously from the side. “She’s such a big deal now, having stolen the Beidou Starfire. How did you manage to get connected with someone like her?”
“It’s a wonder you held back this long before asking.” Cheng Jinyang knew she wasn’t one for scheming, so he didn’t bother hiding it. He simply said, “It’s a long story… Wait a second, what are you doing here?”
“If I’m not here, where else would I be?” Jiang Jiu replied, baffled. “Didn’t we all come here together?”
“This is our bedroom,” Cheng Jinyang said, frowning. “Where are you planning to sleep tonight?”
“Here, of course,” Jiang Jiu said matter-of-factly.
“Have you forgotten the boundaries between men and women?”
“What boundaries?”
“Enough!” Wang Wanrou, lying on the bed beside them, said impatiently. “Stop arguing with this idiot and just get to bed already.”
“Who are you calling an idiot?!” Jiang Jiu immediately bristled and swung a punch at Wang Wanrou. Before it could connect, the princess sister stepped in and caught Jiang Jiu’s fist with ease.
The two locked into a contest of strength. Jiang Jiu’s face was taut with concentration, while the princess maintained her composure, smiling faintly. The servomotors in her prosthetic arm were operating at full capacity, and neither side could gain the upper hand for a moment.
“Impressive!” Jiang Jiu suddenly stepped back, releasing her grip and shaking her aching arm. “When it comes to raw strength, I’d say you’re the strongest!”
“Where did you even hear a line like that?!” Cheng Jinyang was horrified.
“What line?” Jiang Jiu asked, confused.
“Never mind, it’s nothing,” Cheng Jinyang shook his head, thinking to himself, There’s no way someone this clueless could be a transmigrator. It must be a coincidence.
Having delivered a small but effective warning, the princess sister stood calmly, showing no signs of exertion. This left Jiang Jiu even more awestruck, convinced that her opponent was unfathomably powerful.
“Alright, that’s enough! No more fighting!” Cheng Jinyang stepped in to mediate. His skills in defusing conflicts had been honed to perfection through countless chaotic situations over the past year.
“Sister Xinnan, Jiang Jiu has a fiery temper. Don’t take her actions to heart. And Jiang Jiu, why would you start throwing punches without saying a word? If you cause trouble here, do you think Meng Zhang Star Lord will let it slide? Don’t forget, you were aligned with the Jianbing Star Lord faction in your past life!”
“I would never take it to heart,” the princess said with a smile, while Jiang Jiu ground her teeth in frustration, unable to argue back.
The truth was, the only reason Jiang Jiu had made it into this place, evading her pursuers, was because Cheng Jinyang had brought Madam Luo to negotiate with Murong Shu. If things turned sour now, Murong Shu would undoubtedly kick her out, leaving her to face humiliation and regret.
With this realization, Jiang Jiu had no choice but to restrain herself. Although Wang Wanrou’s face annoyed her, and her words were infuriating, there was nothing Jiang Jiu could do. She resolved to avoid speaking to her altogether. No matter what Wang Wanrou said from now on, she would treat it like mosquito buzzing—completely ignoring her.
“Alright, let’s all get some rest.” Seeing that Jiang Jiu was speechless, Cheng Jinyang felt a sense of triumph.
He glanced around the bedroom, noticing there was only one large bed. It seemed they would have to squeeze in together tonight, but it should just about work.
As for what to do tomorrow, that would require consulting Cai Zhaoqin in the dream and then planning carefully with Miss Wang.
