- Chapter 45 - What a Coincidence
When Orson and Litte arrived at the Imperial Academy, it was already around 9 a.m., and the class assignment lists had been posted.
The academy’s structure felt odd to Orson—like a blend of both high school and university systems, a hybrid of sorts.
Each class consisted of fifty students, with twenty classes per grade.
Each class had its own dedicated teachers, except for elective courses, which were shared across the grade.
This setup felt very much like a high school.
However, the scheduling resembled a university. Most classes only took up half a day (sometimes there were no classes at all), leaving the rest of the time for students to manage as they pleased—whether that meant studying in the library, practicing martial arts, attending elective courses, conducting experiments in a lab, or even taking a month-long leave for an adventure.
As long as they passed the academy’s exams, they could earn their credits.
Of course, failing an exam gave students one chance to retake it.
Fail the retake, and expulsion was the only option.
In this sense, it was very much like a university.
“Litte, you’re assigned to Class 1,” Orson said, spotting his name on the class list. “Class 1 is usually one of the best classes.”
“Mm…” Litte nodded.
“Alright, let me take you to the first-year division.”
—
Main Lecture Hall, First-Year Division.
The classrooms in the main lecture hall were all designed as tiered lecture halls, capable of seating up to 500 students if fully occupied. After spotting the sign for Room 1-1, Orson led Litte to his class.
The spacious classroom was already filling up with students. On the podium stood a girl with long, messy black hair and bangs, dressed like a witch. She appeared to be the teacher.
Perhaps feeling tired, the girl slumped over the podium and fell asleep.
“Uh… Orson, is that our homeroom teacher?” Litte asked, looking at Orson.
She couldn’t help but feel that this teacher seemed a bit unreliable.
“Generally speaking, yes,” Orson replied with a nod.
“So that’s who they assigned…” Orson sighed as he looked at the girl. “Litte, you might have a rough time ahead.”
“Huh? Why?”
“Your homeroom teacher is Hecatia. She’s one of the academy’s most senior instructors.”
“Although she’s one of the most senior instructors, she often slacks off during class, puts little effort into teaching, and takes a completely hands-off approach. Her students have reported this to the academy council multiple times, but the council has always refused to remove her.”
“She hasn’t taught a core class since that incident. I didn’t expect her to be assigned as your homeroom teacher this year.”
“That said, she’s very skilled. If you have any questions, feel free to ask her—she’ll probably help you.”
“Got it.” Litte nodded. “Well, Orson, I’ll head in now.”
“Mm. I need to report to my class as well.” Orson waved goodbye to Litte.
Litte watched Orson’s figure disappear from view before turning and stepping into the classroom.
—
“Hey, isn’t this Student 001, Litte?” A group of students immediately surrounded him.
“Mind if we get to know each other?” A sharp-faced noble youth stepped forward, extending a hand toward Litte.
Litte was about to shake his hand when he suddenly pulled it back.
“Oh, I almost forgot. Litte, you were only brought back to your family from the countryside a month ago, right?” He circled him, shaking his head with mock pity. “Tsk tsk, you’ve managed to clean off all that rural stench in just a month. If no one told me, I wouldn’t have guessed you used to be the child of a farmer.”
“Hahaha.” The other students laughed along with him.
“What’s all this noise?” At that moment, Hecatia, still slumped on the podium, spoke up. “If you don’t want to make a bad impression on your first day, sit down.”
“Teacher, we’re just welcoming Litte to the class. Besides, the bell hasn’t rung yet,” the lead boy said with an awkward smile. But when Hecatia shot him a glare, he quickly lowered his head and led his lackeys back to their seats.
Once the crowd dispersed, Litte quietly found a seat in a corner of the classroom, as far from the center as possible.
A short while later, Lianca appeared at the classroom door. With only a few minutes left until class started, she quickly scanned the room, spotted a familiar face, and walked over to sit beside Litte.
Litte froze for a moment upon seeing Lianca but still greeted her.
“Uh… Lianca, what a coincidence. We’re in the same class.”
“Yeah, what a coincidence,” Lianca replied coldly, not even looking at Litte.
When the bell rang, Hecatia finally stretched, sat up, and yawned.
“Haaa~” She stretched again and looked at the students below. “So, you’re all in my class?”
—
Meanwhile, Orson arrived at the second-year division, specifically Classroom 2-1.
Although the lecture hall was large, most teachers preferred to seat students closer to the front for convenience.
In the pre-assigned seating arrangement for Class 2-1, Orson’s seat was by the window in the second-to-last row. By the time he arrived, his seatmate was already there.
“Good morning, Olivia,” Orson greeted her as he sat down.
“Good morning,” Olivia replied with a smile. “I didn’t expect you to arrive so late today. Were you dropping Litte off at his class?”
Last year, Orson was known for always being among the first to arrive in class—a classic overachiever.
“You caught me,” Orson said with a chuckle. “Yes, I was. I didn’t expect Litte’s homeroom teacher to be Professor Hecatia. It seems their class is in for a rough time.”
“Pfft.” Olivia poked Orson’s arm. “You shouldn’t badmouth Professor Hecatia like that. What if I report you?”
“Go ahead. Let’s see if she believes you or me,” Orson said, rolling his eyes. “And besides, am I wrong? She’s very skilled, but that doesn’t change the fact that she’s a terrible teacher.”
“I can’t believe they assigned her to Class 1, which is practically a hidden honors class. It’s ridiculous.”
“Class 1?” Olivia paused, confused.
“Mm. What about it?”
“Uh, my sister Lianca is in Class 1.”
“Well… what a coincidence,” Orson said with an awkward laugh.
“Ahem, ahem.” At that moment, Therese walked into the classroom, stood at the podium, and cleared her throat twice, signaling the class to quiet down.
Seeing that everyone had arrived, she nodded in satisfaction.
“It seems everyone had a meaningful break. Now, as we begin the new semester, I’ll keep my remarks brief…”
