- Chapter 20 - All I Wanted Was a Rejection
Zheng Rong stared in disbelief, eyes wide.
She never imagined Lu Jie would be so cold to her.
After all, from childhood until now, she’d always been doted on by the boys around her. They spoiled her, coaxed her, treated her like a little princess, and jumped to her every whim.
This was the first time a boy had ever treated her with such rudeness.
She was completely dumbfounded.
But she quickly pulled herself together and made a snap judgment to cut her losses.
Lu Jie had spoken that line quite far from the mic—most people probably hadn’t heard it.
She hadn’t lost face just yet.
So she immediately put on a look of overwhelming emotion, covering her mouth as if she were about to burst into tears.
“This is amazing! I just knew you liked me too… I’m so happy!” she said, voice trembling.
Then she dropped the microphone and lunged forward to hug him.
If she was going to act, she’d act to the end. She, Zheng Rong, was not about to make a fool of herself in front of a crowd.
But to her surprise, Lu Jie didn’t hesitate at all—he stepped aside to avoid her touch, his refined brows pulling into a tight frown.
His usually affectionate gaze finally turned on Zheng Rong—but it was sharp and frigid, as if he were looking at a pile of unrecyclable garbage.
Zheng Rong’s arms met only air. Her face was starting to crack.
She lowered her voice, muttering under her breath, “Play along for a second, would you? I don’t want to be embarrassed. I’ll treat you to dinner another day.”
Lu Jie sneered, the corners of his lips lifting in a cold smirk. His gaze turned harsh, but that only made his already-handsome features seem even more devilishly charming.
“I refuse.”
Then, he added pointedly, “I don’t want my girl getting the wrong idea.”
Zheng Rong froze in shock.
His girl? Who?
Don’t tell her it was that Ruan Tang again?
Lu Jie bent down and picked up the microphone from the floor, tapping it to test the sound.
Once he confirmed it was still working, he curled his lips and spoke into it calmly.
“I already like someone. So—”
He paused, then turned coldly to Zheng Rong and said, loud and clear—
“Get lost.”
The audience instantly fell into stunned silence.
Lu Jie couldn’t be bothered to use the stairs. With a single hand braced against the stage edge, he vaulted down effortlessly.
As soon as he landed, he walked straight toward Ruan Tang.
The crowd instinctively parted for him, everyone’s eyes following his every step.
Lu Jie’s gaze never wavered. He was locked on Ruan Tang the whole time, and the look in his eyes—so deep and full of emotion—made more than a few girls in the audience wish they could swap places with her.
But Ruan Tang was still blissfully unaware of the atmosphere.
She pointed at the decorations overhead and excitedly whispered to the system:
【Tongtong, look! That bow hanging up there is so cute!】
The system deadpanned:
【You look like a bow.】
Lu Jie had already stopped in front of her. Seeing that she hadn’t noticed him at all, his warm gaze took on a touch of helpless fondness.
With a low, magnetic voice, he called out gently:
“Tangtang.”
That finally snapped her back to reality. Her shimmering eyes lifted, blinking up at the breathtakingly handsome young man before her.
She tilted her head. “Hm? You’re done singing?”
Lu Jie’s lips curved upward as he reached out to tousle her hair.
“Ages ago, silly.”
Done?
Ruan Tang’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she eagerly asked:
“Then… can you answer me now?”
Say no, say no, please just say no!
At that exact moment, Zhou Yi and Qi Feng finally arrived at the auditorium entrance. Seeing Ruan Tang staring up at Lu Jie, eyes full of hope, their hearts clenched.
“Ruan Tang!”
“Tangtang!”
She heard them—but didn’t look back.
Her mission took priority right now.
She focused all her attention on Lu Jie’s lips as they parted, waiting for the words that would finally end this.
But the response she got was completely unexpected.
Lu Jie said softly:
“I’ll tell you… someday.”
Everyone was stunned.
Anyone with eyes could see he liked her—so why not just accept her confession?
Ruan Tang was clearly losing patience. “When is someday?”
Lu Jie replied slowly,
“A lifetime.”
Ruan Tang blinked. “?”
And the next second—
Lu Jie took a punch to the face, his handsome jaw snapping to the side as a bruise began to form.
Qi Feng was the one who threw it. His eyes burned red with fury as he shoved Ruan Tang behind him and glared at Lu Jie.
“Are you insane? What gives you the right to make Ruan Tang wait a lifetime? Who the hell do you think you are?! That’s the girl I keep at the center of my heart, and you dare to humiliate her like this?”
Zhou Yi stepped in too, standing protectively in front of Ruan Tang. For once, he and Qi Feng were united.
“Lu Jie, I told you. Tangtang’s not the kind of girl you can play around with.”
Lu Jie remained where he stood, head still turned, elegant fingers brushing the blood from the corner of his lips.
Then he let out a faint, bitter laugh.
He wanted to say yes more than anyone.
But if he did… he’d lose her forever.
It was a gamble he couldn’t afford to take.
The air grew heavier by the second, until a soft, trembling voice broke the tension.
“Let it go, okay?”
That delicate voice wavered slightly, and just hearing it made their hearts ache.
Zhou Yi and Lu Jie both turned—and saw Ruan Tang standing there like a little bunny, eyes red and watery, on the verge of tears.
Their chests tightened in unison.
Qi Feng grabbed her hand and pressed it to his chest.
“He’s not worth it. Look at me—aren’t I better?”
Zhou Yi took her other hand, his gaze full of gentle warmth.
“Don’t be sad, Tangtang. I’m here.”
Ruan Tang tried to wipe her tears—but both her hands were being held tightly by the two boys.
She grew even more aggrieved. Her eyes welled up, and the tip of her nose turned pink with frustration.
Zhou Yi’s voice was hoarse. “You like him that much?”
Qi Feng’s gaze darkened. “Is he really the only one for you? Do you need him to accept your confession that badly?”
Neither of them had ever seen her cry like this.
But then—
Ruan Tang shook her head.
Her soft, tear-choked voice sounded like a kitten’s frustrated mewl.
“I didn’t want him to say yes… I just wanted to be rejected… Why is that so hard…?”
Zhou Yi and Qi Feng froze.
Before they could say anything, Ruan Tang shook them off and ran out of the auditorium.
【Wuwu… Tongtong, I give up. This mission is too hard…】
The system let out a long sigh.
Yeah… why was it so hard? It was never this hard before. This was supposed to be a beginner-level mission!
What’s going to happen when she gets to the hell-level ones?!
【Don’t cry, Tangtang. It’s definitely the male lead of this world that’s broken in the head. We’ll switch to another one. Next world, for sure, you’ll have no problems!】
Ruan Tang sniffled and finally stopped crying. Her eyes still shimmered with tears as she blinked up and asked softly:
【Really? The next world’s male lead will be different?】
【He will! The mission’s almost over. Tangtang, pick a way to leave this world, okay?】
Ruan Tang tilted her head thoughtfully. 【What options do I have?】
