- Chapter 28 - Caught in the Act
Snap.
A branch cracked underfoot, echoing loudly in the dead-silent forest.
A clear, cold voice rang out, threaded with restrained anger. It shattered the stillness—and interrupted what Leng Li had almost done.
“Leng Li, what do you think you’re doing?”
Hearing her full name spoken in that icy tone, Leng Li flinched reflexively. Her hair stood on end.
Then, like waking from a dream, it hit her—
Oh my god, what was I just about to do? Had she lost her mind?!
Panic surged. Leng Li shoved Ruan Tang away as if burned and stumbled back several steps herself.
Her cheeks flared crimson, and in a completely unconvincing attempt to cover it up, she blurted out a full confession.
“I—I wasn’t trying to kiss her!! Really!! It’s not like I thought she looked super cute when she gazed at me, and I almost kissed her because I couldn’t help it or anything!!!”
Leng Hao gave her a single glance.
Just one.
And that was enough to make Leng Li feel like she’d fallen into a frozen lake.
She’s doomed. That look meant one thing: her brother was actually mad.
Was it because he saw her—a mermaid—getting close to a human? Did it feel like betrayal to him?
Just as that thought took shape, what happened next left Leng Li utterly speechless.
Ruan Tang, still off balance from being pushed, stumbled—only to be caught and pulled into a firm embrace.
By Leng Hao.
His arms locked tightly around her slender waist, the gesture unmistakably possessive, as if he had no intention of ever letting go again.
Then, as if punishing her, Leng Hao pinched her waist lightly, leaned down, and whispered at her neck in a devil’s murmur:
“You bolted from my side in such a panic… just so you could go seduce my sister?”
Ruan Tang’s brain short-circuited.
She didn’t even process what Leng Hao was saying. His breath grazed her sensitive ear, and with her naturally reactive body, it overwhelmed her instantly.
She trembled involuntarily, soft and weak in his arms.
“Y-You… let me go… Why are you standing so close…”
By the end, even her voice was trembling. Crystalline tears welled up in the corners of her eyes.
Leng Hao had only meant to punish her a little—but now, looking at her, something shifted in his gaze.
His eyes darkened, deepened—like a whirlpool pulling everything in.
This soft, obedient little thing…
She looks just like a ripe cherry. Sweet. Juicy. Irresistible.
That dangerous thought was cut off by an angry shout.
“Brother!”
Leng Li rushed forward and yanked Ruan Tang out of his arms, glaring furiously at her brother.
“What the hell are you doing?!”
Leng Hao remained calm, but when his gaze fell on their joined hands, his brows furrowed with clear irritation.
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? You escaped, only to come running back. Why?”
Leng Li’s throat closed up.
She’d wanted to come back and confront him about Ruan Tang—how had the conversation flipped so fast?
Now she was the one in the wrong.
She looked down. “I came back to save you.”
Leng Hao, back to big-brother mode, scolded coldly.
“Foolish. You can’t even protect yourself. What made you think you could rescue me? That’s a death wish.”
Though it came from a place of concern, his tone was harsh and his expression stern—intimidating, as always.
Leng Li shrank back, lowering her head even further, too guilty to argue.
But Ruan Tang stepped forward, shielding Leng Li with her body. She glared up at Leng Hao, refusing to back down.
“Why are you yelling at her?! She was worried about you!”
Leng Li was stunned by the unexpected defense, her heart warming.
But she was also afraid—afraid this sweet little fool would end up catching the full brunt of her brother’s temper.
She quickly tugged Ruan Tang’s hand and pulled her behind.
“Don’t get involved, Tangtang. It really was my fault… Just let my brother scold me a bit, it’s okay…”
Ruan Tang puffed up in indignation. She stood on tiptoe to minimize the height difference between them and pointed her finger sternly at Leng Hao.
Her peach blossom eyes shone with righteous anger as she scolded him in a soft, serious voice.
“You’re her older brother! You should be encouraging her, not always putting her down! That’s called… that’s called…”
She wracked her brain, trying to remember a term she’d heard in her past life.
“That’s called… CPU! Right! You’re not allowed to CPU her anymore!”
Both Leng Li and Leng Hao blinked in unison.
“?”
What on earth? CPU? As in… computer parts?
The system barely managed to hold back its laughter.
【Tangtang, it’s PUA! You meant PUA!】
(t/n: PUA stands for “Pick-Up Artist,” but in Chinese internet slang, it often refers to manipulative emotional abuse, particularly when someone undermines another’s self-worth.)
Ruan Tang flushed bright red. Her momentum faltered instantly, and her tiptoes dropped to the ground. Her voice turned sheepish.
“W–Well, anyway! You’re not allowed to bully Leng Li anymore… or I’ll fight you!”
“Oh?”
Leng Hao narrowed his eyes, a dangerous glint flashing in them.
“Since when did you and my sister get so close?”
Just last night, this little minx had clung to him, trying to undress him, insisting she sleep beside him.
And now? She’d barely gotten out of bed and was already switching sides?
A sour pang twisted in his chest.
Watching her stand so affectionately next to Leng Li, he felt like the third wheel—the villain, even.
Ruan Tang wilted under his intense gaze, her legs going soft.
She ducked behind Leng Li like a startled bunny, poking her head out just enough to keep up appearances.
“W-Why are you glaring?! I-I’m not scared of you or anything!!”
Leng Li protectively held an arm in front of Ruan Tang, for once standing up to the big brother she’d always admired and respected.
“Brother, if you’re angry, take it out on me. Tangtang was just worried about me.”
Leng Hao stared at them, side by side like some close little couple.
He looked like the bad guy in his own story. The headache throbbed harder.
After a long pause, he sighed, rubbing his temples in exasperation.
“Fine. Let’s go home first. It’s cold in this forest, and Tangtang’s barely dressed. She’ll catch a chill.”
Still sulking, Ruan Tang muttered under her breath:
“I’m not cold! Ah Li gave me a cloak!”
Leng Hao’s eyes narrowed.
He’d noticed that cloak from the start—and it had been bothering him ever since.
With one sharp tug, he yanked it off her shoulders, then shrugged out of his own coat to drape over her.
But just as he leaned closer, his sharp eyes caught a few specks of blood near the hem of her nightgown.
His expression shifted instantly—tense, grave.
He gripped her arms and scanned her quickly.
“You’re hurt? Where? Show me.”
In his panic, he forgot all propriety and even tried to lift her skirt to check her thighs.
Ruan Tang slapped her hands down over her skirt, face flushing so hard she looked ready to burst.
“W-What are you doing?! You pervert!”
Leng Li frowned and stepped in.
“Brother! She’s not hurt. That’s someone else’s blood.”
Leng Hao’s expression darkened.
“What happened?”
Leng Li sighed and explained the situation.
By the end of it, Leng Hao was visibly stunned.
He looked at the delicate, harmless-looking girl in front of him—soft cheeks, wide eyes, the very picture of innocence and fluff.
And she’d taken down a whole group of armed men?
Shocked or not, Leng Hao still lowered his head and gave a solemn, respectful nod.
“Thank you. You saved us.”
