- Chapter 29 - One Bite Wouldn’t Count as Cheating, Right?
She was his only sister. His only blood relative.
If it hadn’t been for Ruan Tang’s timely rescue, who knew what could’ve happened?
Seeing Leng Hao express such rare sincerity, Ruan Tang felt a little embarrassed.
So she gave a soft, obedient wave.
“It’s nothing, really. You don’t have to thank me.”
“However—”
Leng Hao’s tone shifted, becoming even more solemn.
“If something like this happens again, don’t act on your own. Protect yourself first.”
“She may be my sister, but that doesn’t mean I’m willing to see you hurt. If anything happened to you…”
Ruan Tang tilted her head. “If what?”
Leng Hao didn’t answer.
Instead, he quietly removed his coat and gently helped her into it.
Then he turned and instructed Leng Li:
“Keep her safe. Take her back to the villa. I’ve already scanned the area with spiritual power—there shouldn’t be any immediate danger nearby. But if something comes up, signal me.”
Leng Li blinked. “Where are you going?”
Leng Hao didn’t reply. His gaze had already drifted back toward the path they came from, and his eyes darkened, shadows creeping in.
Someone had dared to lay a hand on what was his. They were courting death.
Ruan Tang might have spared them out of kindness.
Leng Hao would not.
—Anyone who dares covet what’s his… must pay the price.
…
Ruan Tang glanced back every few steps, her peach blossom eyes filled with worry as she watched Leng Hao’s retreating figure.
Leng Li’s mood soured instantly. She puffed out her cheeks, grabbed Ruan Tang’s small hand, and tugged her forward in a huff.
“Still looking? You’re practically drooling. Is my brother really that good-looking?”
Ruan Tang stumbled in her slippers, struggling to keep up.
“S-Slow down, A-Li…”
Her soft, kittenish voice tickled like a feather over the heart.
Leng Li glanced down and saw faint scratches on Ruan Tang’s pale calves, left by the forest brush.
Frowning, she crouched down in front of her.
“Get on.”
“Huh?” Ruan Tang blinked, confused.
Leng Li averted her face. The edges of her clear, delicate profile flushed bright red, though her voice remained firm.
“Stop wasting time. I’ll carry you.”
Ruan Tang’s eyes lit up with surprise and a bit of hesitation. Leng Li was also a girl—taller than her, sure, but still…
Seeing her pause, Leng Li unleashed her trump card.
“Are you even my friend or not?”
Without another word, Ruan Tang immediately leapt onto her back, wrapping her soft arms tightly around Leng Li’s neck.
“Thank you, A-Li! You’re the best!”
Leng Li instinctively held onto her legs. The moment her fingers brushed against that smooth, delicate skin, her heart skipped a beat.
With their bodies pressed so close, she couldn’t help but breathe in the sweet scent lingering on Ruan Tang. It made her throat dry.
Damn it… she really does smell as sweet as she looks. Like a soft, sugary piece of candy!
Halfway there, Ruan Tang dozed off against her back. Her gentle breaths brushed Leng Li’s neck, driving her to distraction.
Thankfully, the path to the villa wasn’t hard to find, and even without guidance, she managed to carry Ruan Tang all the way there without trouble.
“Wake up, you little dummy.”
Ruan Tang’s adorable head lolled against her shoulder. Like a kitten, she nuzzled and mumbled sleepily,
“Just two more bites… I’m still hungry… mmph…”
Leng Li quickly turned away, desperately fighting back a criminal impulse.
Damn it, how can she be this cute? It’s practically illegal!!!
Maybe… just one little kiss?
One tiny kiss doesn’t really count, right?
Taking advantage of the fact that no one else was around…
Leng Li leaned in, finally closing the distance to the soft earlobe she’d been eyeing for ages.
But just as her lips brushed against it, a deep, clearly displeased male voice cut through the air.
“And what exactly do you think you’re doing to my fiancée?”
A sleek, low-profile luxury black car had pulled up in front of the villa.
Out stepped a tall, impossibly handsome man with refined features and an air of casual dominance. He wore a tailored light gray suit with cufflinks that glinted coldly under the morning light.
Though his eyes were naturally upturned with a flirtatious tilt, the smile he wore now was anything but gentle.
His gaze landed on Leng Li, sharp and laced with deadly intent.
Fiancée?!
Leng Li froze. Her eyes darted to Ruan Tang’s sweet, sleeping face, then to the man approaching with unhurried steps.
Acidic jealousy began bubbling up in her chest.
She’s already taken? Then why lead me on?!
Didn’t she say the only reason she came to this world was for me? And now she has a fiancé?!
The more she thought about it, the more angry and betrayed she felt. For a second, she considered just tossing Ruan Tang off her back… but she didn’t dare risk hurting her.
Instead, she carefully laid her on the bench near the garden, then stood and fixed the man with a cold glare.
“She’s your fiancée?”
The man strode forward, lips curled in a half-smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“Didn’t you see it with your own eyes yesterday, Leng—”
He paused mid-sentence, brows knitting in realization.
“You’re… Leng Li?”
Then he laughed.
“Well, aren’t you siblings close. One runs off, and the other walks right in. Not bad. Really, not bad.”
At his casual wave, over a dozen men in black suits moved in, swiftly surrounding Leng Li.
Her expression darkened. “You bastard! What are you trying to pull?!”
The man tilted his head slightly. His peach blossom eyes still sparkled, but half of his handsome face was shadowed, lending him an air of dangerous charm.
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m going to sell you.”
To him, mermaids were nothing more than commodities. Humans were either buyers or sellers—he didn’t see them as anything else.
Except for one person.
She alone was special.
He turned away from the struggling, furious Leng Li and gently lifted Ruan Tang from the bench, cradling her in his arms.
Her sheer sleep robe was slightly disheveled, her soft body exhausted.
He frowned faintly.
“Running off this early in the morning… What kind of trouble were you getting into to end up like this?”
Leng Li thrashed in the grip of two bodyguards, still yelling.
“Bastard! Get your filthy hands off her! Don’t you dare touch her!”
The man remembered what he’d just seen—this mermaid girl had clearly been about to kiss Ruan Tang.
Hah. Just like her brother. Foolishly delusional. Overstepping their bounds.
He looked down at the woman in his arms, then up at Leng Li with a slow, mocking smile.
“She’s my fiancée. I’ll touch her however I want.”
And with that, he lowered his head and brushed a kiss against the center of Ruan Tang’s forehead, then raised his eyes again, now filled with smug provocation.
“Who the hell are you to stop me?”
Leng Li’s eyes turned bloodshot with rage. She stared him down with a murderous glare, as though she might bite him.
And just then, a blast of fierce cold energy shot through the air, a shard of ice laced with killing intent slicing toward the man’s face.
He tensed and spun, narrowly avoiding the strike with Ruan Tang still in his arms.
The ice dagger embedded itself deep in the porch column behind him—vicious and unrelenting.
If it had landed… there would’ve been blood on the spot.
Such strong murderous intent!
The man turned his head, only to see a figure approaching.
A silver-haired man, cold as a snow lotus in bloom, walked forward with killing intent radiating from his every step. His narrowed eyes were dark with fury, as if he were facing a sworn enemy.
Leng Li’s face lit up.
“Brother!!”
