- Chapter 83 - Mother and Daughter’s Night Talk (1)
“Just some casual chat,” Yu Fengqing replied vaguely, not intending to discuss the matter further with Lin Mengting.
“It’s so late. Is there something you need?” Yu Fengqing asked.
“Of course!” Lin Mengting’s thoughts turned a few times before she spoke in a cheerful tone to please her mother. “Mom, I bought a house! A three-bedroom, two-living-room house. One room for you and Dad, one for me, and one as a study.”
“Mengting, did you really buy a house?”
Even though the changes in Lin Mengting over the past few months had turned Yu Fengqing’s previous worries into a subtle pride and sense of achievement, she was still taken aback by the news.
“Yes!” Lin Mengting nodded. “The community is right next to our company, not far from the adult education college. It will not only be convenient for me to go to work and attend classes but also serves as a financial investment, killing three birds with one stone.”
“You really plan to settle down there and never return home?” Yu Fengqing felt a mix of emotions, struggling to find the right words.
“We’ll see when the time comes,” Lin Mengting replied vaguely without committing to anything. “If there are good opportunities here, I’ll stay. If not, I’ll come back home. We can always sell the house then. Anyway, when you and Dad retire, you can live with me, and I’ll take care of you.”
“It’s not as simple as you say!” Yu Fengqing couldn’t help but feel a mix of amusement and exasperation. Her worries seemed to be blown away by her daughter’s optimistic outlook, leaving behind only warmth from her promise to take care of them.
Still, despite this, Yu Fengqing remained concerned about her daughter taking on such a significant debt at a young age.
“But Mengting, you need to understand that buying a house is easy, but selling it later isn’t always that simple.”
In her previous life, Lin Mengting had hesitated to buy a house when the prices were at their lowest. Years later, she regretted not making the decision sooner, especially when she ended up buying a house at a much higher price of fifty thousand yuan per square meter instead of three thousand.
“Mom, S City is a coastal city near Hong Kong, with great development potential. I’m sure the house I bought will significantly appreciate in value within ten years.”
“How do you know that?” Yu Fengqing couldn’t help but recall when her daughter had previously mentioned her company’s boss’s connection with the finance minister. It made her pause and consider her daughter’s confidence.
Sensing her mother’s hesitation, Lin Mengting added, “I found out today that many of my colleagues have also bought houses there. Even the big boss couldn’t resist and bought an entire building. Luckily, we chose our houses on the opening day; otherwise, we’d be left with less desirable options.”
“This…” Even though Yu Fengqing was still worried, she knew that Lin Mengting needed to be given the freedom to grow and make her own decisions.
If Lin Mengting was to become an eagle soaring in the sky, she needed to learn to fend for herself rather than being a cute little bird relying on protection.
“Mengting, do you have enough money? If not, let us know. We can send you some.”
This was the genuine concern and care that only a true family could offer.
Lin Mengting wiped away the tears that had unknowingly fallen from her eyes, her voice hoarse with emotion. “Mom, I have enough money. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.”
“How can I not worry?” Yu Fengqing’s voice rose, clearly agitated by the sound of her daughter’s uncharacteristically hoarse voice. “Is someone bullying you again? Is it Qin Mei and Qin Dong?”
Thinking about the hints and rumors she had heard from the Qin family recently, Yu Fengqing felt a growing hatred towards them.
Even more frustrating for Yu Fengqing was that Lin Mengting had repeatedly warned her about the Qin siblings’ intentions, but she hadn’t believed her daughter due to their longstanding reputation as “model neighbors.” Instead, she had even scolded Lin Mengting, urging her to listen to Qin Mei’s advice.
Looking back now, Yu Fengqing wished she could go back in time and smack her past self for being so foolish.
“Mom, you give them too much credit. They can’t bully me.”
Pausing, Lin Mengting added, “But you and Dad should be cautious of the Qin family. The parents of Qin Mei and Qin Dong, who raised such shameless children, are probably no better.”
Thinking about the commotion she had heard earlier, Lin Mengting asked, “Did they come to bother you again tonight?”
“Qin Mei and Qin Dong can’t bully you, so their parents certainly can’t bully us!” Yu Fengqing dismissed the Qin family’s antics as inconsequential.
For such ridiculous people who thought of themselves as the center of the universe, the best response was to ignore them entirely.
—Seeing yourself as someone’s enemy, only to realize that in their eyes, you are nothing more than a stranger, is a feeling beyond words.
Sensing her mother’s reassurance, Lin Mengting relaxed and moved on.
As long as Yu Fengqing remained vigilant, the Qin family wouldn’t be able to harm them.
Having resolved that matter, Lin Mengting continued, “You should come to my place for the New Year this year.”
