Song Tan’s Chronicle - Chapter 104.2
Old Li felt a bit embarrassed. “Tan Tan, if you wanted to till the fields, why didn’t you tell me earlier? I could have called the ox to plow! Why spend money hiring a machine? It’s too expensive!”
Thinking of the rice, flour, grain, and oil Song Tan had sent over, he felt even more awkward.
But Song Tan just laughed. “Grandpa, the ox is getting old. How could we bear to make it do heavy work?”
Old Li chuckled, “Slowly, slowly, no rush to do the work. It won’t tire it out. Besides, look at it now, all sleek and shiny. I haven’t seen it so energetic in years.”
That was true.
Song Tan thought to herself, this ox always filled its belly with coarse grains at home, then came to the field to munch on the purple vetch. For the past month, as the purple vetch had been sold, the ox had been eating its fill. How could it not be in good shape?
If the purple vetch could be a main course instead of just a side dish, she reckoned the ox would have taken up residence in the field by now.
She pondered for a moment and then reached out to stroke the ox’s ear. The ox snorted and looked at her with wet, gentle eyes, nudging its head a little closer.
Song Tan laughed, “But, Grandpa Li, you won’t be idle for long. In the next couple of days, sharpen those plows. After the machine tills the fields, we’ll need to plant rice in these two plots. Once the water is let in, we’ll still need you and the old ox to plow.”
Old Li wasn’t afraid of work; he was more afraid of having nothing to do. Hearing this, his spirit lifted immediately, “Of course! No matter how good that machine is, in our small fields, it can’t beat my old ox!”
“Don’t worry. We’ve been planting rice our whole lives. I promise we’ll get everything done meticulously!”
Seeing Song Tan pull out a sickle from her basket, he asked, “Are you planning to cut some more to feed the pigs?”
“Yes,” Song Tan smiled, “To feed the pigs, and I’ll chop some up to feed the chicks and ducks. If the field is cleared this afternoon, burying it in the soil would just be wasteful.”
If there wasn’t enough spiritual energy and water plants in the pond, she would have chopped some up to feed the grass carp too!
Old Li glanced over; the purple vetch was barely a palm’s length. Why use a sickle? You could grab a handful with your bare hands.
In no time, he stepped onto the field ridge. “I’ll go get a pole too. I want to prepare more for my ox, dry it up, and store it as fodder.”
Why not? With so much purple vetch all over the place, what was the harm in feeding it to the ox?
After Old Li left, Song Tan looked at the vast field, where bright purple and green colors intertwined. The silent and honest old ox beside her reminded her of her once ambitious plans for a livestream shopping channel. She let out a long sigh.
She had hoped to revive her century-old post-production skills and turn herself into an influencer with a million followers!
But plans couldn’t keep up with big data. People just weren’t interested in watching such things!
Still, she had already bought the computer. It couldn’t just sit there unused forever. Sooner or later, she would have to start online sales… For now, she could just take some random shots.
Having left home without a tripod, Song Tan casually propped her phone on a clump of purple vetch, leaning it against the field ridge. Only then did she notice a message from her savior. After reading it, she swiped it away.
There wasn’t much to be excited about, right?
After all, she thought, who in this world wouldn’t like her tea?
Sure enough, when you slack off, it stretches till night…
Purple vetch couldn’t be used as the main ingredient for a large amount of consumption.
