Song Tan’s Chronicle - Chapter 106.2
“Really?” The girl’s voice was filled with delight, and she quickly responded, “I’ll go and cut them soon. Eating chives in March and April, when everything is growing, is the best way to boost our energy!”
The old man chuckled again, “Yes, chives are great. Cut some to make dumplings. With so many people at home recently, we could eat a lot in one meal.”
“The chive roots are also very dense. I checked them out. Once the field is tilled, you’ll need to transplant them and spread them out. We could plant several more rows.”
Chive dumplings…
Zhao Lei watched quietly, then reached out to tap the follow button at the top.
He noticed that there were already more than 1,700 people in the livestream room, yet the comment section was completely clean, as if no one was watching at all.
But when he hit follow, a message popped up on the screen:
[Congratulations! You are the 999th follower. Come witness the streamer’s growth firsthand!]
Wow!
Zhao Lei felt a strange sense of pride in his heart. He thought to himself that the livestream content he liked could indeed attract people—1,700 viewers and 999 followers; what kind of magic was this?
After all, livestream platforms often inflated their view counts. Each time someone clicked in, it counted as a view; if the same account clicked a hundred times, it could count as a hundred views.
So, what did these numbers mean now?
It meant that only a tiny fraction of viewers left, and almost everyone else had chosen to follow.
Meanwhile, in the field, Song Tan had long forgotten about the livestream. She was simply pondering—
Should they have chive, vermicelli, and egg dumplings for dinner, or chive and pork crackling dumplings? Or maybe chive pancakes?
While thinking about it, she didn’t forget to respond to Old Li’s suggestion.
“Grandpa Li, you’re right. I’ll take care of it in a couple of days. We’ll plant half of that field with chives. This year, vegetables are selling well, so I plan to grow more.”
Of course, they would need to sow some seeds soon; otherwise, those few chive roots wouldn’t be enough.
Old Li was not in the dark about Song Tan’s vegetable business. He even knew the prices!
But he was tight-lipped and never mentioned it to anyone. When pulling up vetch, he stuck to the part meant for the ox and didn’t wander into other areas to avoid interfering with her income.
Now, he nodded, “Vegetables in the city are expensive. When you asked me to clear two plots for seedlings, I covered them with straw after Qingming. Now, you can see how well they’ve grown! Once the field is tilled and it’s time to plant, I’ll help transplant them.”
“We’ll need to cut some bamboo from the nearby grove to build trellises for the beans, cucumbers, bitter gourds, and loofahs…”
“And for the rice, I checked—the seedlings are growing really well! This year, your family’s rice will surely taste great.”
“Absolutely,” Song Tan replied confidently, “After all this work, if we don’t make some money, my parents’ retirement funds would be gone.”
In the countryside, complaining about poverty is essential. Otherwise, relatives from ten miles around might come asking to borrow money today or pick some vegetables tomorrow… What could you say?
It was better to set it straight from the beginning: these are for sale.
And for things meant to be sold, anyone reasonable would be more cautious.
Old Li, for example, understood this well.
As for those who weren’t reasonable, there were ways to deal with them too.
