Chapter 2: Triggering the Mission, Heading to the Cafeteria
Liang Yu looked down the corridor and started descending the stairs.
On the fifth floor, the hallway was filled with severed limbs, and the walls were splattered with blood, human or zombie, he couldn’t tell.
It looked terrifying, and the smell of blood made Liang Yu wrinkle his nose in distaste.
After pausing for a while, Liang Yu decided to move to the next floor. As he turned, a zombie lunged at him with its bloody mouth wide open.
Liang Yu quickly raised his left hand holding the dagger and stabbed it into the zombie’s chest, pinning it down.
Then, with lightning speed, he pulled a disposable chopstick from his inner jacket pocket and stabbed it into the zombie’s head.
In no time, the zombie stopped moving.
Liang Yu didn’t relax, he pulled out the dagger and with a strong swing, decapitated the zombie, kicking its head away.
Thanks to his high school soccer team experience, his skills were quite good!
The zombie’s head made a perfect arc through the air, flying out of the dorm windows.
Liang Yu smiled slightly.
“Congratulations to the host for killing the first zombie. Task: Kill fifty zombies. Reward: Zombie Level Detector.”
“Reward Display.”
The next second, something similar to a scouter from “Dragon Ball” appeared before Liang Yu.
Liang Yu wasn’t interested in the device itself; he was intrigued by the concept of zombie levels mentioned by the system.
In his memory, the concept of zombie levels appeared in “Resident Evil” and “Z Nation.”
He was curious about how zombie levels would be categorized in this world!
“System, what’s the deal with zombie levels!?”
The system remained silent, evidently wanting Liang Yu to explore on his own.
Seeing no response, Liang Yu didn’t press further.
The primary task at hand was to find his roommates. Liang Yu didn’t linger on the fifth floor and continued to the next level.
On the fourth floor, the bloody smell was still strong, but Liang Yu was gradually getting used to it.
At the staircase, Liang Yu cautiously looked around. Outside, there were only five zombies, but he wasn’t sure if there were more inside the open dorm rooms.
Liang Yu tapped the stairwell pillar with his dagger, making noise to attract the zombies and complete his task.
Though there were only five now, every little bit helped!
Just as Liang Yu expected, the zombies rushed towards the sound. Liang Yu took a deep breath, tightened his grip on the dagger, and prepared.
Calculating the zombies’ speed, as the first one reached the staircase, Liang Yu stabbed it in the head, quickly withdrawing the blade along with brain matter.
Then he kicked, sending the zombie flying, its body crashing into the ones behind it.
Liang Yu swiftly moved towards the remaining four zombies, kicking at those trying to get up.
From his pocket, he pulled out chopsticks, one, two, three…
In an instant, the remaining four zombies were eliminated effortlessly.
The same happened on the remaining floors. Reaching the dorm entrance, after clearing the zombies below, Liang Yu opened the security room door and went inside.
Four floors of zombies, totaling thirty-six, leaving only fourteen to complete the task.
In the security room, Liang Yu rested while sorting through resources, mostly instant noodles, and some blood-stained bread.
He took the former but left the latter.
The blood on the bread could be human or zombie, and if it was zombie blood, eating it would be disastrous!
Better safe than sorry.
The security room had plenty of weapons: batons, shields…
These weapons might work against regular people, but dealing with mutated zombies would be challenging!
After a brief rest, Liang Yu prepared to head to the cafeteria.
He dragged a zombie corpse inside, stripped its clothes, and let some blood out.
Liang Yu planned to wear these clothes since zombies identified each other by scent!
From the security room to the cafeteria was a long way, and Liang Yu didn’t want to fight his way through. Combat noise would surely attract zombies!
Even though Liang Yu could kill them, he couldn’t fight them all at once. With so many zombies, he was bound to get distracted.
If that happened, Liang Yu would be doomed!
He was a rational person; even in games, he would think before making a move, even if the opponent was low on health!
Though sometimes he made mistakes, most of the time, his judgments were successful.
But this was different; this was the real world. Life was precious, and if he died, it was game over!
Liang Yu hadn’t even dated or held a girl’s hand. How could he fall here?
In the apocalypse, caution was key.
After a while, Liang Yu put on the zombie’s clothes and smeared zombie blood on himself.
He secured his backpack, opened the door, and mimicked a zombie’s movements, heading towards the cafeteria.
The football field on the right side of the road, once bustling, was now filled with zombies, a terrifying sight.
Liang Yu moved at a steady pace. After about half an hour, he reached the cafeteria’s back door.
Inside, some zombies were gnawing on limbs, while others wandered aimlessly.
Liang Yu glanced around, estimating there were over a hundred.
He leaned against the wall, taking a deep breath. Checking the inside wasn’t going to be easy!
After lingering at the back door for a while, Liang Yu decided to check the front entrance. With so many zombies here, getting in was no easy task.
Perhaps there were fewer zombies at the front, giving Liang Yu a chance to slip inside.
To get from the cafeteria’s back door to the front, he had to cross a small park.
Liang Yu moved slowly, observing the chaotic park.
Suddenly, a familiar figure appeared before him. Upon closer inspection, it was his roommate Li Liang, now a zombie.
His eyes were hollow, and his arms were bitten multiple times, making Liang Yu’s heart ache!
He silently vowed to personally send Li Liang off, to give him peace, once he finished exploring.
Liang Yu continued forward, and as he passed by Li Liang, his arm brushed against him.
His heart skipped a beat. Had he been discovered!?
Turning to look, zombie Li Liang growled at Liang Yu a few times before leaving!
Watching Li Liang’s departing figure, Liang Yu finally relaxed, exhaling deeply.
Since it was fine, Liang Yu continued onward.
Soon, Liang Yu reached the cafeteria’s front entrance. Looking inside, there were fewer zombies than at the back, but still more than ten.
Liang Yu, with nervous steps, entered through the door.
Seeing Liang Yu disguised as a zombie, a few zombies growled at him but didn’t approach.
Though he hadn’t been discovered, he couldn’t let his guard down.
Once inside, Liang Yu carefully navigated through the zombies, reaching the entrance to the kitchen. The door was wide open, and Liang Yu moved inside.
