Chapter 48: Trouble Arrives

“And then?” Fu Lang pressed, “Xiao Bao, you didn’t get hurt, did you?”

Su Bao frowned. What kind of dumb question was that?

“No.”

Fu Lang hesitated, then cautiously asked, “You didn’t, uh, kill anyone, right?”

That was the real question he wanted to ask. After all, the screams from last night were downright blood-curdling!

Su Bao frowned again. Another dumb question.

“No, I can’t kill anyone.” At least, not directly. Being in a virtuous body, she was forbidden from committing murder or evil deeds.

Oh, good!

Fu Lang felt an inexplicable sense of relief.

But as it turned out, he had relaxed far too soon…

The next morning, a body was found floating in the school’s artificial lake.

A student out for a morning walk thought they were seeing things. But upon closer inspection, they realized it was a corpse and scrambled to call the police.

The police arrived quickly, cordoning off the area and reviewing the limited surveillance footage around the school. They also conducted a quiet investigation.

Eventually, they zeroed in on Di Jian and his group.

After all, Dong Xuan was known to hang out with them, and there were witnesses who confirmed they had all been together the previous night.

Di Jian and his crew, sporting bruised and swollen faces, were brought in for questioning. Each of them looked worse than the last, their heads swollen like pigs’.

It wasn’t until they got back the night before that they realized Dong Xuan was missing.

At the time, they assumed the coward had run off on his own and even spat in frustration:

“Damn it! He ditched us when things got rough. No loyalty at all!”

They never imagined that Dong Xuan had fallen into the lake and drowned.

When had it happened?

None of them had noticed last night!

Lacking any sense of loyalty themselves and still bitter about the beating they’d received from Su Bao, they all pointed fingers at her.

During their statements, they conveniently omitted their original malicious intentions, claiming instead that they had encountered a girl in the pavilion and gotten into a conflict. They described the girl as having incredible combat skills…

Worried about making their story too definitive—what if the investigation proved Dong Xuan’s death had nothing to do with Su Bao?—they hedged their statements.

They only said the girl had astonishing strength and had beaten them up. They suggested, without certainty, that she might have accidentally pushed Dong Xuan into the lake.

Their account was vague enough to avoid perjury charges but clear enough to implicate Su Bao in the case.

The police acted swiftly. After taking their statements, they summoned Su Bao to the station.

Seated in the interrogation room, Su Bao looked small and delicate. The two officers exchanged glances.

If they remembered correctly, several boys had come in earlier, all visibly injured—and not lightly.

According to their statements, it was this petite girl who had beaten them up?

Su Bao, dressed in a white dress, met the officers’ scrutinizing gazes with her large, round eyes, looking serene and innocent.

One officer discreetly observed her. With her small frame, taking down several boys would require significant muscle.

But this girl had no visible muscle at all…
