- Chapter 17 - The Path Has Narrowed
The letter left by Moria answered many of Leon’s doubts and also allowed him to handle the affairs of Green Shade Territory with a free hand.
Leon turned around and found that there were no shocked expressions on the faces of Sophie, Anna, and Annie.
“Aren’t you… afraid?”
Sophie didn’t speak, but just gently shook her head, expressing her attitude.
“Afraid of what?”
Annie asked in confusion.
“Afraid of me? I am not the real Leon. Aren’t you curious where the real Leon went? Aren’t you afraid of me, the imposter?”
After asking this question, Leon realized he was being naive.
One was an Ice Witch who had experienced being on the verge of losing control, one was a spy who often walked on the edge of life and death, and the other was an assassin whose primary mission was assassination.
How could they be afraid?
The expressionless faces of the three at this moment were the best proof.
I am truly a clown.
After a moment of silence, Anna proactively broke the silence.
“Lord Leon, no matter who you are, you are the one we will follow. Our loyalty will only be offered to you.”
“Never betray, even if your character is vile, your personality twisted, and your morals corrupt.”
Annie added.
The taciturn Sophie nodded slightly, indicating her agreement with the twins’ view.
Leon’s mouth twitched slightly, “Annie, that last sentence was quite unnecessary.”
Anna took a candlestick from the cabinet and gently took the letter from Leon’s hand, placing it on the flame of the candlestick. The letter burned in the flame, like a butterfly being reborn from fire.
Annie took the thick blanket from Leon’s body.
Leon lay down on the bed and said to them,
“It’s getting late, you should go back and rest too.”
Anna and Annie simultaneously bowed and withdrew.
Tonight was their first night of regained freedom. They wanted to feel this world with all their hearts.
The sisters closed the door to Leon’s bedroom, held hands, and walked along the dark corridor together to the moonlit garden.
Leon wasn’t sleepy either. He turned his face and looked at Sophie, who was standing by the window.
Since telling Sophie last time that he needed her protection, she hadn’t left his side by more than 10 meters.
Of course, Leon felt that his bedroom was also large enough for two people to rest together.
He would sleep in the bed, and the soft sofa would be for Miss Witch.
“Sophie, aren’t you going to rest?”
Sophie shook her head.
“What do you usually do at this time?”
Leon asked.
“Patrol.”
Sophie’s cold voice reached Leon’s ears.
Leon suddenly remembered that he had inherited the title too hastily and hadn’t even gone to see the high wall yet.
Monsters exist in this world, so every territory has built its own unique high wall.
Inside the high wall is the city, which has a relatively high safety factor. Outside the high wall are dangerous forests and wastelands.
The place Leon first arrived at, White Bone Forest, was a large forest famous for tree monsters, skeleton monsters, corpse monsters, and goblins.
Because the forest area was too large and the population of Green Shade Territory grew too fast, some small dependent villages were also built outside the high wall.
The part of White Bone Forest near the villages was actually “purified land” cleared by the Knight Order.
Monsters would not approach easily.
That’s why the guards chose to bury the sick people alive there.
Leon and his companions encountering tree monsters there was likely due to the misfortune brought by the 【Misfortune Constitution】.
“Tomorrow, let’s go see the high wall together.”
Leon said.
Sophie nodded.
She was already used to being the guardian of Green Shade Territory and rarely slept.
She was used to standing on the high wall, staring blankly under the moonlight.
She stood by the window, looking down through the glass at the twin sisters playing in the flowerbed.
They were holding hands, spinning, and dancing, like innocent children, enjoying the joy of being reborn.
Sophie suddenly felt a little envious.
She picked up a colorful glass vase from the windowsill and whispered to herself,
“Is it better to grow flowers or raise fish?”
Sophie wished she had a playmate, whether it was a flower or a fish.
That way, she could hold it in her hand or embrace it at any time. No matter where she went, she wouldn’t be alone.
That way, she would feel complete and no longer just think about patrolling and fighting.
That way, she would have her own interests and hobbies. Perhaps she could show a gentle smile like Anna’s and say rebellious words like Annie’s.
Sophie was somewhat happy because she had already started thinking about the future.
Leon heard her words, and a smile curved at the corner of his mouth.
He closed his eyes and fell asleep.
He had no dreams that night.
When he woke up, Anna and Annie had already entered the bedroom.
Anna had prepared water for him to wash his face, and Annie had prepared his clothes.
Leon noticed this was the second set of formal wear he had received since arriving at the Lord’s Mansion.
“New seamstress?”
“This is the outfit Anna personally sewed for you last night.”
Annie said.
Anna didn’t expose her and maintained an elegant smile.
The assassin’s needlework was very good, but she had underestimated Leon’s size. This suit was a bit small.
Leon felt the waist was a bit tight.
Annie was a little annoyed, her beautiful brows slightly furrowed. It seemed she was not suited to be a seamstress.
Leon could tell from the sisters’ subtle expressions that this outfit was definitely made by Annie, not Anna.
Given Anna’s meticulousness, she wouldn’t make clothes that didn’t fit.
“I think it’s great, it fits me very well, it makes me look more energetic.”
Leon just said this, and as he raised his arm, the jacket made a ripping sound.
The seam under the arm had split.
Instantly, the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Everyone was silent.
Leon awkwardly took off his jacket and said, “I’ll just wear the set from yesterday.”
Anna immediately brought Leon the formal wear.
Annie’s face turned slightly red. She felt her path had narrowed, although Leon didn’t seem angry about it.
Leon changed his clothes and refused Anna’s washing water.
“Please don’t treat me like I’m severely disabled from now on. I can go to the washroom myself. And changing clothes, I can also do that myself.”
After enjoying a day of being waited on hand and foot, Leon still preferred to do things himself.
Anna and Annie clearly showed disappointed expressions upon hearing Leon’s words.
“Did we do something wrong?”
Anna asked.
“It’s Lord Leon who is tired of us and wants new maids, to see new faces.”
Annie added.
“I didn’t mean that. I’m just deciding to do it myself, it’s more convenient. And you are no longer my servants, you are free, you are my partners.”
Leon said,
“You don’t need to follow me around every day. Just appear when I need you.”
“Come when called, go when told, an expendable existence.”
Annie asked.
Leon sweated. She summarized it quite accurately.
“Alright, forget I said anything.”
“Lord Leon, on the surface, we are still your maids, otherwise it will arouse suspicion.”
Anna said gently. She knew what Leon meant, that he wanted to give them enough respect.
Leon nodded.
Sophie looked at the clothes Annie had made and fell into deep thought.
She was thinking if there was something she could do for Leon as well.
“Sophie, let’s go patrol.”
