- Chapter 9 - The Confession That Backfired
This time, Ruan Tang was clearly far more practiced. Her stage presence had improved, and her delivery was more confident.
Without rushing, she pulled a prop love letter from her pocket and handed it to him.
She even ad-libbed with ease, giving herself an extra line or two for flair.
“Please go out with me!”
Head tilted up, her delicate little face glowing, her eyes sparkled brilliantly as she proudly reported to the system in her heart:
【Tongtong, wasn’t that great? I practiced with a drama last night! I totally nailed it, right? Hehehe!】
Tongzi clutched his nose, overwhelmed.
【Damn! So—so cute!!! Who could possibly resist this?!】
Clearly, Qi Feng could not.
From shock, to surprise, to sheer joy—it took him only two seconds.
Staring down at Ruan Tang’s upturned face, those bright, watery eyes gazing at him, he felt like his heart was about to burst with love.
The tall man leaned down and pulled Ruan Tang tightly into his arms.
His voice trembled with emotion.
“Yes. I’ll go out with you. Little Soft Candy, you’re mine now.”
Ruan Tang’s triumphant smile froze on her lips.
Wait, what?
What??
Did she hear that right?
Qi Feng gently released her, still unable to contain his joy. Impulsively, he leaned in, aiming to kiss her soft, inviting lips.
A heavy force slammed into him from behind, knocking him off balance.
And then—without a word—a fist smashed straight into his cheekbone.
The attacker?
None other than Zhou Yi—the same Zhou Yi who’d said, “Let’s fight another day.”
“Holy crap, the school heartthrob and the school tyrant are throwing hands!”
“This is the first time I’ve ever seen Zhou Yi this angry!”
“Yes! Let them fight! Hot guys brawling is the best genre!”
Zhou Yi’s punches were fast, sharp, and merciless. His handsome face—like finely carved white jade—was now cold and terrifying.
Qi Feng recovered quickly. He was no pushover. With equal aggression, he launched into the fight, returning each blow without hesitation.
Lu Jie rushed in to break them apart.
Ruan Tang was utterly dumbfounded.
What was going on?!
Why were her previous mission target and her current mission target beating the crap out of each other?
Why had her task failed again?!
All she wanted was to be thoroughly rejected—why was that so hard?!
The wave of frustration hit her all at once, and her eyes welled up with tears. She didn’t even make a sound—just stood there quietly, tears spilling down her cheeks.
At first, everyone’s attention was locked on the chaotic brawl between the two handsome boys. No one noticed her.
But after a moment, someone turned and gasped, rushing toward her.
A small crowd quickly formed around her, distressed and outraged on her behalf.
“Hey! Stop fighting! You’ve scared her to tears!!”
Ruan Tang’s eyes were red and swollen. Big, clear tears rolled down her flawless cheeks—utterly heartbreaking to see.
Qi Feng panicked and shoved his way through the crowd, wrapping one large hand around the back of her pale neck and pulling her into his chest.
His brow furrowed tight with worry.
“Tangtang, don’t cry. It’s okay, I’m here.”
Zhou Yi hurried over too, completely ignoring the bruises on his face and the scrapes on his arms. His voice was low, apologetic, and painfully soft.
“I’m sorry, Tangtang… I lost control…”
His throat was hoarse. “Please don’t cry, okay? I was wrong.”
Lu Jie watched the two of them—one on each side of Ruan Tang—shielding her. There was no room for him to even approach, and his chest ached with quiet bitterness.
Still, he stepped forward, took off his jacket, and gently draped it over the girl’s head, shielding her from the gawking crowd.
Then he spotted some creep trying to take a photo of Ruan Tang crying.
His eyes darkened.
Without a word, he snatched the guy’s phone, hurled it to the ground, and stomped it to pieces.
Then he smiled coldly.
“Come find me tomorrow for the money. I’ll buy you a new one. You’re welcome.”
The boy bolted in terror.
Lu Jie let out a derisive snort and barked at the crowd:
“Move along. Show’s over. Get out of here.”
His tone was casual, but his sharp gaze was intimidating enough to send everyone scattering.
Soon, only their small group remained.
Once Ruan Tang finished crying, she realized she was still wrapped in Qi Feng’s arms, with Zhou Yi whispering softly beside her, and someone guarding her from behind.
She blinked her wide, dazed eyes. A single teardrop still clung to her long, fluttering lashes.
Enough to melt anyone’s heart.
“Don’t cry anymore, okay?”
Qi Feng lifted his hand and gently wiped the tears from her cheeks, his voice softer than ever.
“Be good, Tangtang.”
Ruan Tang was still stunned.
She wriggled free from Qi Feng’s embrace and took two steps back, as if he were some wild beast.
Then, voice trembling with leftover tears, she asked:
“Why didn’t you reject my confession?”
Qi Feng was stunned.
After a pause, he smiled as if remembering something.
“Because I like you. I’ve been meaning to confess too. I just thought you liked Zhou Yi…”
Whatever else he said, Ruan Tang didn’t hear it.
She was in complete shock.
【Tongtong! He said he likes me! What is going on!!!】
The system was equally stunned, but rushed to comfort her.
【It’s okay, it’s okay! We still have one more chance—you can switch mission targets again! Don’t panic! Stay calm!】
Ruan Tang was on the verge of losing it.
【Wuwuwu, if I fail again, I’ll seriously start thinking I’m just not cut out for this job. What if I’m actually terrible at quick transmigration missions?!】
The more she thought about it, the more emotional she got. Her eyes were red again, tears ready to fall—when she heard Qi Feng say:
“Little Soft Candy, from now on, you’re my girlfriend. I’ll treat you right. With me around, no one will ever bully you again.”
Ruan Tang was suddenly filled with guilt.
She’d only confessed for the mission. She had thought for sure Qi Feng would harshly reject her.
But somehow, he actually liked her—and wanted to be with her.
Worse yet, she had been the one to ask him out in the first place.
But she couldn’t date Qi Feng. She still had to confess to someone else.
So, after a moment’s hesitation, Ruan Tang made her decision.
“Qi Feng-senpai.” Her voice was soft, still tinged with tears as she bowed her head seriously.
“I’m sorry. Please forget everything I just said.”
She didn’t dare look at his face. With another whispered “I’m sorry,” she turned and ran.
She didn’t stop until she’d gone far, far away—chest heaving, her spirits at rock bottom.
【It’s over, Tongtong. Am I turning into a heartless jerk?】
She bit her lower lip, guilt flooding her eyes with red.
【No way! You’re just doing your job. Besides, even if you were a jerk, so what? You’re so adorable, and it’s not like you’re cheating anyone out of money or love. If they end up heartbroken, that’s on them for falling for you! You’re totally not a jerk!】
Still, Ruan Tang couldn’t shake the guilt.
【Tongtong, you said before that I could choose how to leave a world, right?】
【Yup! Do you have an idea?】
Ruan Tang blinked her pure, innocent eyes and clenched her little fists with determination.
【I want to fake my death!】
If she died, then Qi Feng and Zhou Yi would surely forget her eventually and go on with their lives.
That would be better for them.
She was just a passerby. She shouldn’t mess up their destinies.
【Tongtong, I want to finish this mission quickly—and get out of here!】
Her mind was made up.
